30/09/2014: China suspends imports of GM soybean

China has suspended the import approval process for a genetically modified soybean variety, citing "low public acceptance" of GMO food, according to two sources familiar with the matter, reports by Dominique Patton of Reuters.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/09/26/china-grains-gmo-idUKL3N0RK1C420140926

It is the first time that China's Ministry of Agriculture, has cited public opinion as a reason for delaying approval of a GMO crop.

The decision could fuel wider agribusiness concerns over an increasingly tough environment for GMO crops in China.

"Previously if the MoA decided not to approve a new product, it would be because of not enough data," said an executive with an industry association, who did not want to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue.

"But this year, the reason is because they are considering social acceptance problems."
The sources declined to identify the soybean variety involved. China accounts for about 60 percent of globally traded soybeans.

China currently allows the import of eight genetically modified soybean products and 15 corn products, which are largely used in animal feed rather than food for human consumption.

A GMO corn variety grown in the United States, Syngenta's MIR162, has not been approved for import by China, causing Beijing to turn away almost one million tonnes of US corn cargoes since November last year.

Analysts have linked the rejection to China's large domestic corn supplies, but GMO food is also struggling to win over public opinion after a series of media reports in recent years alleging purported health risks.

30/09/2014: Investing in Nigeria? Here's an event not to miss.

There's a great event coming up in Nigeria. It's the AgraInnovate conference and exhibition which takes place from November 18-20, 2014 at the Landmark Centre in Lagos.

http://www.informa-mea.com/agrainnovate
Despite the insecurity insurgency in northern Nigeria, the Federal Government has reiterated its resolve to have a wheat bumper harvest by 2015, thereby halving imports through local production.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina, says in promoting the event that "with dwindling oil fortunes and the end of the telecom's boom" the next investment frontier is agriculture that will unlock the country's vast potential and resources to feed not only the continent of Africa but also the world! He says the future is not in oil but in agriculture.

Paul Gbededo, Group Managing Director of Flour Mills of Nigeria, reiterates the sentiment by saying that aquaculture is the future and that "whoever does not join the train now will be left behind."

Nigeria's agricultural sector is being reshaped and reinvigorated as the center of the country's economic growth and prosperity. The key challenges facing this new chapter of sustainable intensification and productivity are widespread.

Modernisation, new ideas and new technology are required across all aspects of agricultural practice. Significant improvements in infrastructure, storage, distribution and waste management must also be introduced.

Agra Innovate is a pioneering new trade event which will bring international agricultural technology providers to Lagos to spend three intensive days with key Nigerian dignitaries, policy makers, agribusiness leaders and entrepreneurs. Together, this audience will identify key business opportunities, technological solutions, share best-practice and form the strategic relationships that will drive this new period of market growth.

30/09/2014: Multitasking ‘monsters’ - the focus of a new range of hammer mills

Dinnissen Process Technology specialises in the development and production of process technologies and equipment for the feed and petfood industries.

http://www.dinnissen.nl
'Monster' hammermill from Dinnissen

Dinnissen is now offering a new and extremely wide range of hummer mills that provide an effective solution for any challenge when it comes to grinding and screening even the most difficult ingredients. The new hammer mills, which will be on view at EuroTier 2014 in November, are characterised by a broad range of capacities and product output particle size as well as flexibility and special add-on functionalities, making them real multitasking 'monsters'.

Enormous range of screening panels, perforations and functionalities
Hammermills are particularly suited for grinding soft to medium-hard products such as grains, herbs, spices, protein-rich ingredients, nutrients, premixes, and minerals. The company’s new range of multitasking hammer mills enables the user to screen output particles ranging in size from 3mm down to 150microns.

Single hammers or double hammers are used depending upon the specific ingredients to be grinded down. A crucial feature of the new product range is the enormous range of screening panels, surfaces and perforations available, as these features determine the capacity, quality and effectiveness of the screening process and make it possible for Dinnissen to offer its clients an effective solution for practically any grinding and/or screening challenge.

Two rather striking members of the new product range are the small Easy-to-Clean DINNOX Mill and the Dinnissen D-Topline Hamex Hammer mill with automatic screen changer.

From the small Easy-to-Clean DINNOX Mill
The Easy-to-Clean DINNOX Mill is a very compact hammer mill with a minimum capacity of 30kg per hour. This small mill is fitted with exchangeable grinding rotors, providing it with a variety of breaking, cutting and grinding functionalities, as well as exchangeable screening panels and adjustable RPMs.

This allows the user to easily and quickly switch between an almost endless variety of grinding and screening applications, depending upon the specific ingredients process and the desired end result. In spite of its very compact design, it is also fitted with completely detachable grinding rotors and extra-large inspection hatches, making it easy to access all the components, including the screening panels, and to clean everything quickly and thoroughly.

The Easy-to-Clean DINNOX Mill is available in stainless steel 304, RVS 316L and polished or electrolytically polished RVS. It can also be fitted with an automatic cleaning system based on compressed air, CIP or hot steam/air for extra hygienic applications, and complies with all EHEDG requirements.

To the D-Topline Hamex Hammer mill with automatic screen changer
Dinnissen’s largest and most sophisticated hammer mill will also be on view at the Powtech in Nürnberg. The new D-Topline Hamex Hammer mill with automatic screen changer can handle grinding capacities of up to 45,000kg per hour and the screen changer has space for four to six different sets of screening panels.

The mechatronic screen changing system automatically selects and places the appropriate set of screening panels in the hammer mill. After the production process has been completed, it also removes and stores the screening panels in less than 40 seconds.

This makes it possible to change screens extremely quickly and greatly reduces downtime. The D-Topline Hamex Hammer mill features a new and ingenious design which greatly increases the surface area of the grinding and screening panels inside the hammer mill, which in turn provides increased grinding and ringing capacity.

The screen storage facility is also fitted with an extra-wide chamber that can be automatically opened. This makes it easier to carry out maintenance and remove damaged screens if necessary, thereby minimizing downtime. The new hammer mill has a maximum speed of 1500rpm, giving it a longer usable lifetime and in lower energy consumption than its predecessors.

29/09/2014: Alternative flours for solving celiac diseases

The search for alternative flours and the creation of gluten-free products are providing a unique opportunity for innovation. Gluten-free coffee flour offers a way for companies to reuse coffee bean waste while giving the celiac disease community another option for cooking. The flour offers a variety of nutritional benefits beyond the caffeine kick.

Dan Belliveau created coffee flour after noticing the waste left from coffee bean production at his job as a director for Starbucks. Once coffee beans are extracted from the coffee cherries, the waste forms a pulp that offers health benefits. Although some plantations use this as a fertilizer, many of them do not reuse the pulp. Belliveau saw an opportunity to make the remaining coffee cherries into a flour that could help people with celiac disease.

There are several options for people on gluten-free diets who need safe flours including corn, rice, tapioca and others. However, coffee flour offers another alternative with its own nutritional value. Dan Belliveau explains that the amount of caffeine in the coffee flour is less than a regular cup of coffee, and the company is working on a decaffeinated version.

Gluten-free coffee flour has three times more iron than spinach, five times more fiber than wheat and three times more protein than kale. It is also a good source of potassium, and you would have to eat two bananas to match the flour. It is a multipurpose product and can be used in a variety of recipes ranging from bread to cookies. Instead of a strong coffee taste, Belliveau explains the flour has a fruitier flavor, but this does not limit it to desserts. He suggests it can be used to make pasta and bread without any complaints about taste. The coffee flour will be available in stores in 2015.

22/09/14 ANIMAL FEED MILLING PLANT AND EQUIPMENT TO BE AUCTIONED BY SANDERSON WEATHERALL AND CHARTERED SURVEYORS LISNEY

Auction sale of 600 lots being staged on Thursday, 2nd October 2014
Industrial auctioneers Sanderson Weatherall have been appointed to stage an online auction of animal feed milling plant and equipment on behalf of Joseph Stewart & Co Ltd following its decision to sell The Corn Mills milling business in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, Ireland.
The live onsite auction and webcast is being staged by Sanderson Weatherall in conjunction with chartered surveyors Lisney, Ireland’s largest independent real estate agents and features the sale of 600 lots of production machinery suitable for the manufacture of pellets, coarse ration and micronized flakes.
Key items to be auctioned include five pelleting presses, two hammer mills, two micronisers, two roller mills, electrical equipment, laboratory equipment, plant spares and consumables and many items of factory equipment.
The auction and webcast will be staged at 11am on Thursday, 2nd October with viewing of equipment at The Corn Mills in Mill Road, Boyle between 10am and 4pm on Wednesday, 1st October or by appointment.
Auctioneers will be on site to conduct a traditional sale with online bidding available through Bidspotter.com to purchasers from the UK and overseas who are unable to attend.
Roy Tubman, partner asset advisory at Sanderson Weatherall, said the sale was being staged because the directors of Joseph Stewart & Co Ltd had sold the company to focus on other areas of their business.
He said: “There is a well-established milling industry in Ireland because of its healthy agribusiness sector so local buyers will have an opportunity to acquire plant for their own mills in good time for installation prior to the busy winter period.
“This is a rare opportunity for local buyers who attended similar auctions in the UK because rationalisation of the industry means there are now very few mill disposals.”
Mr Tubman expected the auction to attract bidders from throughout the United Kingdom and abroad with enquiries received from mainland Europe, SE Asia and Australia.
Ends.
