31/05/2017: IGP-KSU Risk Management Course Coming in August 2017

IGP-KSU Risk Management Course Planned


Individuals interested in expanding their knowledge of marketplace challenges are encouraged to take advantage of the IGP-KSU Risk Management course on August 7-11, 2017 at Kansas State University's IGP Institute Conference Center in Manhattan, Kansas.

The course is divided into two parts: basic and advanced. The first three days are focused on key elements of price risk management and hedging through the use of grain futures. The basic section of the course will also focus on basis trading and its impact on those who purchase and sell grains and oil seeds.

"In this basic segment, we cover what the commodity exchanges provide, how they can be used to manage risk and the pitfalls of trading futures," says Jay O'Neil, senior agricultural economist for the IGP Institute at Kansas State University. 

The second segment of the course will take place during the last two days and will focus on the use of futures options and the OTC markets when dealing with risk management. 

The IGP-KSU Risk Management course is designed to help participants gain a valuable understanding of the relationship between cash and future markets, futures spreads, principles of hedging, and principles of risk management and trending strategies.

Accuracy, repeatability and reliability are essential concepts in the field of level control.

Without ensuring these key requirements are met by whichever level monitoring equipment is being deployed, producers risk running out of product (leading to production stoppages and downtime) or, worse, overfilling their storage vessels (with the risk of product loss, pollution and costly clean-ups). This is as true in the storage of grain as it is in the storage of cement, sand, sugar, or anything else from a long list of bulk products. It is therefore in the best interest of site operators and producers to firstly know how their grain will behave in the storage vessel, and secondly to utilise quality, up-to-date level monitoring equipment.

Garner Industries is expanding its operations in Lincoln, Nebraska with a 40,000-square foot addition to its existing 75,000 square foot building. The addition will accommodate the company’s growing plastic injection molding business, provide additional warehouse space, and offer room for future business growth.

“With almost 65 years of manufacturing for a wide variety of industries and ISO 9001:2000 certification, Garner has been a solid employer in Lincoln, Nebraska for decades,” said Garner Industries CEO Scott McLain. “When Garner moved from its 48th Street location in 2001, we planned then for future expansion. Garner plastic molding and manufacturing services along with our growing BinMaster line of level sensors are increasingly successful in both domestic and global markets.”

The aesthetics of the west-side building addition will be consistent with the current building located on 32 acres at the corner of Highway 6 and North 98th Street. The company will also provide additional parking on the west of its existing south parking lot. Two new docks and semi-truck access for loading and unloading will also be located on the south side of the addition.

The construction project is being completed by the commercial design and building firm Ayars & Ayars of Lincoln, Nebraska. Ground breaking began on May 15, with an estimated completion date for the project around September 1. Garner employee Randy Feese is the building expansion project manager with plant manager Todd Tyler assisting in coordinating this extensive project.

In further expanding its capabilities, the ERBER Group shows commitment to the North American market by confirming that a new hub will open in Kansas City in 2017.

A new ERBER Group North American hub office will open in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area later this year, building out new, shared support functions for all ERBER Group divisions and enabling exciting expansion plans to unfold to drive further growth in this key market.

The ERBER Group divisions includes international animal nutrition company, BIOMIN and leading diagnostic solution provider for the agricultural, food and feed industries, ROMER LABS.

The new horizontal vibrating sifter, YVSI, from Alapala is used for mill products which are difficult to re-sift such as filter flour and whole grain flours. The most common applications are for all types wheat, maize (corn), barley, spelt, buck wheat, rye, sorghum, millet and specialty milling.



The design of this machine, which incorporates a fast rotating rotor and a vibrating sieve, enables the efficient separation of fine and “sticky” flours from the coarse flour thus improving flour yields. 

The efficient design of the vibrating screen allows an excellent self-cleaning action and a fast and easy sieve cover change.

The YVSI can also be adapted to be used as a vibrating bran finisher with a through put of 2 tons / hour.

30/05/2017: In-depth: Grain load assessments for silos

Grain storage at an industrial level is usually synonymous with steel circular silos made of corrugated wall sheets with vertical stiffeners all around the silo. 

Bentall Rowlands, UK based silo manufacturer has been dedicated to this task for the last 50 years. One of the first steps required in silo design is the estimation of the pressures exerted by the stored material. This is one of the key factors in silo design, as it will definitively impact the amount of steel required to build the silo and, eventually, the silo cost. 

There are mainly two alternative design procedures generally accepted in the market. The first one is based on the North American code ANSI/ASAE EP 433 “Loads Exerted by Free-Flowing Grain on Bins.” This code has traditionally been the most common method used for decades and generally widely accepted, even outside the US.  The second method has only been on stage for the last two decades and is based on the European code “EN 1991-4: Eurocode 1: Actions on structures - Part 4: Silos and tanks”, an evolution of the former German code DIN 1055.  There is still a lot of expectation and interest on why pressures based on EN 1991-4 seem to be bigger than those based on ANSI/ASAE EP 433 even when the stored material and the silo dimensions are supposed to be the same. To provide an answer to this question, this article analyses the main differences between these two procedures.

The Thailand Rice Convention has been running since 2001 and is now hosting its 8th bi-annual event. 

The department of Foreign Trade and the Ministry of Commerce have collaborated to welcome more than 800 traders, facilitating discussion and knowledge sharing. Some highlights include, "The Global Forum on World Rice Trade and Food Security", organized at the Thailand Rice Convention 2013 and, "Pushing ASEAN Towards the World's Rice Hub"

The focus for 2017 is, "Rice Plus: Next Step of Innovation." This will be held in the heart of Bangkok, at the CentralWorld shopping complex, and Centara Grand at the CentralWorld hotel. Rice has seen a epic shift in technology and innovation over the last few years and this has increased both the value of rice and public perception.

26/05/2017: Feed: The potential of NIR to measure reactive lysine

 Lysine
 Lysine is an essential amino acid for poultry and swine, meaning it cannot be produced via transamination and must be supplied to the animal through dietary intake. Lysine is usually a limiting amino acid if not supplemented in synthetic form, and due to its high concentration in tissue deposition, formulation of diets for amino acid requirements often relies upon ratios between lysine and all other amino acids. The total lysine that has been measured in the raw material or finished feed is not a measure of the bioavailability to the animal; this only comes with measuring the performance response to lysine in animal trials.

 Apparent ileal digestibility gives a measurement of the apparent disappearance of lysine in the small intestine. Standardised ileal digestibility, which accounts for basal endogenous losses, is widely accepted as the most advanced method for quantification of the dietary-origin amino acids digested and absorbed in the small intestine. Synthetic lysine is often added to diets, based on price, to supply animal requirements.  

 The Maillard Reaction
 Reducing sugars are able to bind to free amino groups found on amino acids, especially the ε-amino group found on lysine. This is known as the Maillard reaction and results in the production of modified lysine, such as Amadori and Maillard products, including furosine and carboxymethyl-lysine (see Figure 1). The Maillard reaction is an irreversible reaction, which makes the lysine unavailable for digestion. Reactive lysine, the lysine that has not undergone the Maillard reaction and is metabolisable, can be described as unmodified lysine which possesses a free side chain amino group and can be either free or protein bound.


 In the past, reactive lysine has been called a number of names including chemically reactive lysine, chemically available lysine, available lysine and total available lysine. Measuring total lysine in feeds involves the acid hydrolysis of the proteins present; during hydrolysis some of the damaged lysine can be released and analysed as lysine. However, as discussed above, this lysine is not available to be metabolised by the animal. To identify the lysine that can be both digested and metabolised by the animal, ileal digestible reactive lysine must be determined.

 Internationalising the livestock market in one of the fastest growing countries in Asia. 

 Indonesia is considered as the largest economy in Southeast Asia. The middle class are set to become a prominent force in the country. This is due not only to their huge demographic, but also to their strong income growth prospects. 

 Investors will find in Indonesia the ideal balance between booming demand for livestock products and an abundance of agricultural and natural resources. This effort is also to realise an independent country in terms of the fulfilment of livestock products, and at the same time, to improve the welfare of farmers." 

 The Minister of Trade also remarked that Indonesia should be self-sufficient on livestock and be able to export these products. He said, "The welfare of farmers is rising, and the poverty rate is decreasing. That is the governments target." 

 VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific and Federasi Masyarakat Perunggasan Indonesia together announced investment platform entitled, 'ILDEX Indonesia 2017'. 

 It is the third edition of its kind, focusing on international livestock, dairy, meat processing and aquaculture exposition. It will take place at the Jakarta International Expo in Hall D1 and D2, Jakarta, Indonesia on October 18-20, 2017.

 More than 8,000 trade visitors are expected to participate and interact with 250 international brands. The show will feature three industry zones which will include; feed and animal health, feed milling and farm equipment and genetic, breeding and processing. 

 The exhibition will also present two country pavilions (China and South Korea) and a special pavilion for pet food. 

 Mrs Panadda Atthakowit, Head of Competence Center of Livestock of VNEAP explained that, "Indonesia represents 40 percent of ASEAN's total population and middle-income economies. It also represents a growing domestic and regional consumer base. Dinnissen has broadened the deployability of its mixers, thanks to a mix of innovations

The mixers have been further improved in several areas, and, moreover, they explicitly consider the role of the mixer in the overall operation. That is why the validation of mixing processes have now been added to their service. 

 
The improved D-Topline mixer is easy to clean
Dinnissen Process Technology is actively engaged in the development and manufacture of process equipment such as grinding mills, mixers, bulk bag filling systems and turnkey projects for the food industry,animal feed industry, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. The company is a specialist in prudent, hygienic and rapid mixing of powders, pellets and granules.

They never shirk challenges such as achieving higher capacities, improving homogeneous mixing of micro-components, mixing poor flowing materials or processing high percentages of liquid. On the contrary; Dinnissen are constantly looking for applications that are a trigger for the development of even better mixers.

Improved D-Topline
This desire for constant innovation has recently led to the introduction of the 'Improved D-Topline', a model based on the familiar Pegasus double-axle paddle mixer. The geometry of the installation is modified in such a way that the upper sides of the mixing chamber lean in towards each other, resulting in a drop shape.

The negative angle of inclination in the upper side of the mixing chamber reduces the risk of product adhesion. In addition, the 'Improved D-Topline "can be equipped with an additional hatch ('front hedge') on the front.

This feature makes it much easier to inspect or clean the mixer. In some cases, thanks to this hatch, a version can be offered where the paddle axle assembly can be driven entirely from the mixing chamber. Furthermore, the ‘Improved D-Topline’ is provided with a divisible shaft seal, allowing the installation to be CIP-cleanable.

High-shear mixer
Dinnissen is at an advanced stage of optimising high-shear applications in the mixing process, which are also based on the Pegasus mixing principle. There are applications in which powders require a greater frictional force in order to obtain a homogeneous product. A change in the paddle configuration ensures that the new high shear process applies the necessary energy to the product, but without sacrificing the typical advantages of the Pegasus mixer.

Explosion-proof mixer
Yet another development is the introduction of an explosion-proof mixer (Atex-zone 20 internal), suitable for processing materials in which the Kst- and LEL-values are within a fixed range. This mixer was subject to a risk assessment and received a type approval for the entire Pegasus mixer range from an independent Notified Body. 

 
An example of an 'All in One' concept
‘All in one’ concept
The 'All in one' concept is Dinnissen’s response to the demand for fully integrated process lines. An example is the mixing line which has recently been shipped to a customer in the United States. This consists of a skid comprising a docking system for vessels which can be deposited into the mixer dust-free, which can then move the mixer up and down to mix and fill the same vessel again.

The great advantage of the 'All in one' concept is that the various components are perfectly matched to each other. This means that a consistently high-quality product can be guaranteed. There is no segregation of the product, and moreover the process is completely dust-free and explosion-proof.  

Smart concept

Dinnissen is becoming increasingly involved in the concept stage with their customers. This lies in the fact that the company not only acts as a process specialist but also as a solution provider. Nowadays, processes are developed using 3D modelling, simulations and time analysis.

Thanks to VR support (Virtual Reality), the customer can visualise the design of a process and have an idea of the accessibility and possibilities of systems and components at a much earlier stage. One of the accomplishments of Pegasus mixers is that they are able to mix in concentrations as low as 0.1%. This offers the possibility of removing a premix-step, thereby simplifying the process and gaining the benefits of less handling and energy consumption.

Validation
The increasing interest in the role of the mixer in the overall production process translates into the need for Dinnissen’s customers to have the mixer validated. A validation makes it possible to determine which set of parameters will result in the raw materials being homogeneously mixed to produce an end product of the required quality.

Thus, making it possible to reproduce the mixing processes. Dinnissen is also interested in this validation data, as it will allow them to further optimise their mixers. For that reason, Dinnissen has now added a validation of its mixing processes, which may, if required, be undertaken by an independent agency.

 ABB's range of fully certified aluminium motors for dust ignition and increased safety protection is now extended with frame sizes 160 up to 280. 

 The aluminium frame offers a lightweight alternative for many applications such as grain handling installations where there is a risk of combustible dust. The lower weight saves transport costs and uses simpler support structures on site. The motor's smooth surface prevents dust accumulating on the frame, thereby making it easier to clean, resulting in lower costs and improved safety. 

 Dust risk is sometimes overlooked because grain, sugar, starch, flour and coffee, for example, are not normally regarded as explosive. Premises that process or handle these substances, as well as other fine, powdered combustible materials can greatly increase their safety levels by using dust ignition protection motors rather than standard products. 

 The products are certified according to the European ATEX directive 2014/34/EU, and the global IECEx system. This certificates include protection types Ex tb for zone 21 installations where combustible dust is likely to occur, and EX tc for zone 22 installations where combustible dust only occurs in abnormal conditions. 

 The dust groups covered are IIIC for conductive dust, and IIIB for non-conductive dust also covering IIIA for combustible filings. 

 For locations having a potential risk of gas, the EX ec protection suitable for zone two installations is available. Ex ec is the new increased safety protection concept introduces by the latest revision of IEC/EN 60079-7, replacing non-sparking (Ex nA) protection for electric motors. 

 Third party certificates from an official certification body are available for all categories, also for those where it's not required by the ATEX directive. The certificates include the possibility to operate the motors with a frequency converter for maximised energy savings and speed control.

 Joining Nerak Wiese as Business Development Manager, Bob Tatlow is bringing his wealth of bulk handling expertise to the vertical elevation specialist. 

 With over 35 years' experience in capital investment projects across a range of industries - including agriculture, food, waste bio-mass, pharmaceuticals and aggregates - Bob has specific expertise in sales of bulk materials handling and processing equipment. 

 He comments, "My most recent role was as Sales Manager for Aumund Group, which specialises in systems for handling cement, alternative fuels and minerals. Before that I spent three years as Export Sales Manager for Guttridge Ltd, selling tailored bulk handling solutions across a wide range of sectors."

 A time served mechanical engineer, Bob is familiar with a variety of processing and handling technologies, and has a sound understanding of CDM (Construction Design and Management) regulations. Outside of work he enjoys sailing, watching rugby and motorbike touring.
