Dinnissen expands with new building complex on the Sevenum industrial estate

Dinnissen Process Technology is to open an additional 60 x 70 metre production complex on the Sevenum industrial estate in the Netherlands.

Major investments have been made within this new complex, which will be adjacent to the existing Dinnissen factory. These include 10-tonne overhead cranes, wall console cranes, state-of-the-art laser cutting installations, highly accurate lathes, milling machines and press brakes, a separate stainless-steel welding hall and a lot more specialist equipment to meet the future customer requirements. In addition, Dinnissen supplies increasingly complete prefab skids for many international customers. The expansion offers more possibilities in this area.

With this new complex, Dinnissen hopes to open new doors for global producers and, with the investment it makes, gives a good impression of the Dutch production industry.

Alapros is chosen for the largest flour mill project in Uzbekistan

Alapros Grain Milling Technology, which is rapidly rising to notice with R&D investments and machine designs in Italy, recently signed a contract with Beshear Biznes LLC, which owns 35 percent of the flour trade in Uzbekistan, for the establishment of two new projects which are 600 and 400 tonnes-per-day respectively.

Alapros signed the agreement during at the IDMA exhibition in Istanbul, and the member of the board, Mehmet Alapala said, 'we will establish the facility with daily capacity total of 1000 tonnes-per-day in Tashkent for Uzbekistan's top flour industrialist Beshefar Biznes LLC'. Alapala continues, 'The plants will be commissioned shortly before end of the year.'

Alapros selected for Uzbekistan’s largest flour mill project

LAW Ibérica company profile

LAW Ibérica was set up in 1970 as a subsidiary of the French company LAW, which manufactures electrical agricultural machinery.

Since then, Law Ibérica has been operating within Spain’s agricultural industry as engineer, distributor and installer of LAW and DENIS electrical agricultural machinery, which includes harvest preservation systems, small feed factories, etc.

One of the company’s particular strengths is its work in the field of research, development and innovation (R&D&i). The company’s current founder and chair, the agricultural engineer Jaime Gasset, has had much professional success including his invention of the single silo DRYERATION system, which was granted a patent in 1986 by the Institut National De La Propiété Industrielle in Paris, with French and EC registration number 86 15391.

This is a proprietary creation developed by LAW Ibérica in Spain. Since then and up to the present day, the number of units installed has continued to increase and over 125 installations have already been finished.

Livestock Philippines 2019 postponed at the request of the Department of Agriculture, Philippines

As a result of the growing concerns of African Swine Fever (ASF) and at the request of the Department of Agriculture and the local industry stakeholders, UBM Exhibitions Philippines has decided to postpone Livestock Philippines to May 28-30, 2020.

UBM Exhibitions Philippines have released the following statement:
'The Department of Agriculture has implemented tightened quarantine controls as one of its strategies since the outbreak started last year. As a result, the Department and the local swine industry have raised the possibility of ASF entering the country through exhibitions such as Livestock Philippines, as some of the foreign exhibitors and/or participants may come from ASF infected countries.

'In this regard, UBM Exhibitions Philippines supports the Department of Agriculture/BAI and the local swine partners in its call for postponement of the 2019 show.

'Although Swine is only one component of Livestock Philippines, the organisers, based on expert advice, had put in place extensive biosecurity measures including the cooperation of the attendees to follow strict quarantine measures. However these measures were not seen as sufficient and the industry associations have requested our cooperation to postpone the event to a later date.

'We seek the understanding of all exhibitors and associations related to Aquaculture, Feeds, Broiler and Cattle to support the Philippine Government and the Philippine Swine Industry in its request. Arnreiter Mühle improve illumination in Bühler sorter to cut waste and raises quality

An Austrian food processor has improved profits, driven up product quality and cut waste by simply upgrading the lights in its Bühler SORTEX optical sorter from fluorescent to LED.

An Austrian manufacturer of bakery products is one of the first European companies to increase productivity and reduce waste by switching to LED lighting in their Bühler SORTEX optical sorter.

The decision by the food producer Arnreiter Mühle to replace the more traditional fluorescent lights used in sorters, is set to become an industry trend as companies look to benefit from the lower running costs and the consistent illumination provided by LED lighting.

During the sorting of raw materials such as soya, wheat, malt, spelt, rye, barley and oats, the Bühler SORTEX optical sorter is looking for the subtlest difference in colour to ensure it only rejects unwanted materials. Key to this process is the level of illumination of the raw material during the sorting process, to enable Bühler's high-resolution optic sensors to operate at optimum efficiency.

While a relatively simple upgrade, the result of switching to LED three months ago is already paying dividends for the company.

'Since using the LED lights we have found that once the calibration is properly set, we don't waste so much of the raw materials thanks to less of the good material being rejected,' said CEO Walter Arnreiter. 'We could see the quality of the end product had improved with the upgrade. For us, it means less waste, higher profitability and greater product security.'

The industry shift to LED lighting is part of a wider move away from halogen and fluorescent bulbs, both in the manufacturing and domestic markets. LED is not only longer lasting, it is cheaper to run, saving you up to 60 percent in energy costs. Additionally it performs consistently and offers a more directional light than fluorescent bulbs, making it ideal for projecting light onto the viewing area of an optical sorter.

Based in upper Austria, about 40kms from the regional capital Linz, Mr Arnreiter's mill produces specialized ingredients for bakeries and food processors, as well as biscuits and muesli. The company sorts and processes a range of raw materials including different types of wheat, soya, spelt, barley, oats and poppy seeds.

Mr Arnreiter points out there is already a market awareness of the quality benefits provided by LED lights. He said, 'When I talk to our customers in the cereal industry, they have experience with these machines and customers are already aware of the advantages of the upgrade.'

LED lights are also safer to handle during maintenance with no chance of them accidently shattering. Installation time is scheduled for half a day and can take place during the annual maintenance service to reduce any potential production down time.

Customers switching to LED lights also benefit from not having to pay for new fluorescent tubes every year as they degrade. LED lights operate at peak performance for five years ensuring the sorters do not require recalibration as the lights deteriorate. Fluorescent tubing may also create an inconsistent illumination along the length of the tube resulting in variable sorting performance.

'When using the fluorescent system the brightness can decrease over time and the Bühler SORTEX technicians told me that the light may not be consistent with the left and right sides not being as bright as in the middle,' said Mr Arnreiter.

The LED upgrade is available for the A, B and Z range of Bühler SORTEX optical sorters. Fluorescent lighting is seen as an aging technology, with the chance that replacement parts will eventually become more difficult to source. All new Bühler SORTEX optical sorters come with LED lights already fitted.

VIV Asia - The Aqua Feed Extrusion Conference

On March 13th at VIV Asia, Milling & Grain magazine hosted the Aqua Feed Extrusion Conference, with Dr Mian Riaz, Head of the Extrusion Technology Programme at Texas A&M University.

The one-day conference encompassed all-things extrusion and featured seven expert speakers from Corporate Project Services, Amandus Kahl, DSM, Andritz, Clextral, Wenger Manufacturing and Texas A&M University.

Talk one- Introduction and principles of extrusion technology

Once Mr Roger Gilbert, Publisher of Milling & Grain completed introductions, Dr Riaz kicked off the conference with the first talk, which gave a very comprehensive and thorough overview of the intricacies of extrusion and how such technology works to process your raw materials.

Extrusion technology, he stated, first began being used in 1948, but since that time it has evolved drastically to become a somewhat more common and refined process. He stated the many benefits to extrusion, such as the low-cost of the process as well as its remarkable energy efficiency and high product quality.

The difference between single-screw and twin-screw extruders was also discussed (twin-screw extrusion, although more expensive, provides a higher-quality level of quality control and flexibility).

Talk two- Project planning and design considerations for aquatic feed facilities

Jonathan Iman provided an intriguing talk on the wider aspects of the utilisation of machinery such as extruders- the necessity of proper project planning when building a new factory or expanding your operation.

Mr Iman stated that there are five areas to consider when planning a project: feasibility, inputs, design, food safety/sanitation and equipment. A project should be feasible with a good return on investments, as well as a manageable total cost of ownership. Location, permits, air quality and water quality are also important considerations.

Design is a complex feature to consider, as this depends on the building layout and easy integration of machinery that all flows smoothly from process to process, whilst ensuring everything remains hygienic. Ingredients must also remain sanitary by remaining separated and proper analyses must be carried out to ensure food is all kept hygienic.

Livestock Phillippines 2019 show postponed

Next week’s Philippines Livestock show postponed until May 2020 due to African Swine Fever threat.

Please note that if you were planning on attending Livestock Phillippines 2019 show, the event has been postponed at the request of the Philippine Department of Agriculture. The African Swine Fever (ASF) is a menace afflicting the worldwide livestock industry. Non-afflicted countries are taking the necessary precautions to avoid the spread of the ASF virus within their territory and the Philippines is no exception to this move. One foreseen possible threat to the local swine industry is the organisation/staging of Livestock Philippines 2019 Event to be held on June 26-28, 2019 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila.

In the interests of public health, the organisers of Livestock Philippines 2019, UBM Exhibitions Philippines, Inc., has chosen to postpone the show to May 28-30, 2020 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila.

Milling and Grain crown the winners of the GRAPAS Innovations Awards

VICTAM International was a particularly successful event for three companies who were crowned the winners of the GRAPAS Innovations Awards. On the first evening of the exhibition, June 12th, Milling and Grain magazine took to the stage to present the trophies to their selected winners with the best innovations for flour, rice and pasta processing technologies.

Publisher Roger Gilbert, alongside Features Editor Rebecca Sherratt took to the stage to announce the winners of the GRAPAS Innovations Awards, a yearly awards ceremony hosted by Milling and Grain magazine and VICTAM, to honour the best innovations for the food processing industry that have been produced in the past two years.

Runner up- Balaguer Rolls' Optical Fluting Test 2.0

Following the success of the first Optical Fluting Test, the world's only device to check rolls profiles by optical vision, this second generation has been specifically designed to help millers to easily measure and check roll profiles. In only few easy steps, the device enables the miller to get a certificate which will show the existing fluting profile of a specific roll, in order to help them to take the decision of changing the rolls at the most suitable and cost-effective time.

Winner One- Petkus' OptoSelector 901t

The first winner of GRAPAS 2019 was the very worthy Petkus OptoSelector 901t. Petkus developed in the OptoSelector 901t a unified system of analysis combining the full-color RGB method and a special light transmission method based on the translucent features of the seeds.

This was made possible through the use of a special lighting system, which is characterised by intensive, software controlled light source, exact focusing and perfect homogenization of light across the entire working width of 900mm. Along with this, highly sensitive optical sensors are used to capture residual light passing through the grains. As a result, OS 901t has the ability to sort grains using full-color RGB analysis, analysis of geometrical parameters, as well as analysis on the basis of the light transmission method of objects in a single pass through a machine with a capacity of up to 15 t/h.

Winner Two- Bühler's LumoVision

Lumovision is based on data-driven optical sorting technology that closely targets grains affected by Aspergillus Fungi, the cause of Aflatoxin contamination. Produced by a fungal mold, aflatoxin is colorless and odorless, making it difficult to detect. Yet as few as 2 highly contaminated grains in 10,000 can render an entire batch unsafe. Identifying and removing aflatoxin-contaminated grains is a major challenge.

With the new cloud-based system constantly monitoring the product flow and assessing risk, yield losses are reduced to almost zero, while the safety of the final product is assured.

Winner Three- Selis' Dynamic Angular Positioning System (DAPS)

Dynamic Angled Positioning System (DAPS system) has brought a big solution to the important problems on the smooth roll passages and fine grooved roll passages. Due to the thermal expansion on the edges of the cylindrical grounded (no cambered) smooth rolls, caused by the heat generated by the bearings of the rolls, rolls become a concave shape. By means of angular positioning of two rolls, through the milling line on the rolls, milling gap between the rolls will be equal.

IGC 2019 Conference

The 29th International Grains Council (IGC) meeting was held on the 11th and 12th of June 2019 at Canada Centre in London.

The main purpose of the IGC Grains Conference is to highlight the key challenges facing the international grains and oilseed industry. This year, speakers attended from around the world, with a special focus placed on Africa. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Shuichi Akamatsu, Minister, Embassy of Japan.

General Trends
Overall grain production in 2019/2020 is expected to rise by 2 percent. However grain consumption is forecast to exceed supply. World production of rice has gone up over the last three years. While production of wheat has fallen slightly over the last few years, due to weather events such as the spring flooding in the American West, world wheat prices have increase. In 2018, the major reason for wheat price jumps was due to currency issues with the US dollar.

Climate change impacts
Michael Scandrell of the European Commission explained that, in general, the EU generally enjoys stable grain markets. However, there is a growing consensus from the public and regulatory agencies for greater environmental sensitivity in all forms of agriculture, as well as a focus on sustainability while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Trade wars and politics
Trade disputes continue to cause instability in the markets. A particular concern has been the damaging effects of politically motivated trade wars, such as the battle over soya beans currently raging between the USA and China. The full effects of the retaliatory trade ban by China on US soybeans has been somewhat lessened by the prolonged impact of African swine fever on Chinese demand.

Meanwhile, three years on, BREXIT continues to loom over the economies of the UK and the EU, with no one able to guess how a no-deal BREXIT will impact cereals trading. And, as always, the weather is a factor as continuing poor weather in the American Great Plains delayed the spring planting.

Evening Reception
After the first day's session ended, H.E. Mr Koji Tsuruoka, Ambassador of Japan to the UK, and Mr Shuichi Akamatsu, IGC Chairman, welcomed IGC Council delegates and conference participants to a reception at the Japanese embassy.

Day two
Day two of the conference featured workshops covering biodiesel trends, prospects for wheat products, pesticide MRLs and their importance for international trade of agricultural commodities, managing price risk in the rice trade and future of the grains shipping sector. The IGTC presented a panel on its work with industry and governments to achieve a market and regulatory environment supportive of trade that avoids disruptions in the international movement of grain, oilseeds, pulses and derivatives products.
