Mondi invest €7 million in food packaging facility in Hungary

Mondi, a leading global packaging and paper group, has successfully completed the implementation of a new state-of-the-art paper sack converting machine at its Nyíregyháza site in Hungary. The machine, a Windmöller & Hölscher AD 8320 / AM 8115, allows the plant to produce a new line of sophisticated paper sacks for food packaging. The site will be capable of producing more than 130 million sacks annually.

The Mondi Nyíregyháza plant, which employs more than one hundred people, serves the Hungarian, Romanian, Austrian and Bulgarian market in many industries and sectors. It produces industrial paper sacks (open mouth and valve bags) for applications such as cement, building materials, food-feed-seed, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Due to this €7 million investment, the entire layout and set-up of the Nyíregyháza plant was re-designed in four months, including the storage area, printer area, warehouse, and ink kitchen to increase operational efficiency and safety.

The plant is now in the process of seeking the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification by the end of this year in order to serve the food, feed and seed industry with sacks that meet their high quality and hygiene standards.

Evonik launches AMINONIR® FA, a new NIR service for the analysis of 49 fatty acids

Evonik has developed AMINONIR® FA – the first of its kind NIR service for the complete set of fatty acids contained in feed ingredients and fish feeds. Besides fish feed for various species, the Evonik calibration portfolio serves more than 20 raw materials covering up to 49 individual fatty acids from C6 to C24.
Calibrations are based on representative samples from all-important countries of origin worldwide and are continuously updated and extended. The major advantage of advanced AMINONIR® FA is that fatty acid profiles become available in a matter of minutes without involving tedious wet chemical analyses or third-party labs.
 

Director Service Development, Dr Markus Wiltafsky-Martin, says a user of AMINONIR® FA can analyse thousands of samples per year which offers totally new possibilities to benefit from the analytical results.

“The past 60 years in animal nutrition, we have always strived to be more precise and create diets that fit better to the real requirements of the animals,” he says. “Fatty acids are essential for animals to prevent major health and performance problems.”

Besides being an energy source, fatty acids have other vital functions in insulation, the protection of inner organs, and as a building block of membranes. They are also needed for the synthesis of hormones (eicosanoids) and as carriers of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Dr Wiltafsky-Martin points out that it’s important not to focus only on the total fat levels in animal diets.

“Instead of looking at total fat levels, we advise to focus on the fatty acid composition. There can be a lot of variation in the fatty acid pattern even within the same type of feed ingredient. It is important to consider these variations in the feed formulation to really meet the needs of the animals.”

He says essential fatty acids for poultry and pigs include linoleic acid and linolenic acid, while marine fish require docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and arachidonic acid.

“Some fatty acids are essential and need to be supplied via feed. In laying hens, the supply of essential fatty acids has an impact on egg size, while in sows the supply of essential fatty acids ensures reproductive performance and piglet development,” says Dr Wiltafsky-Martin. “In reproductive animals it’s very important to have the right levels of those fatty acids which are precursors of hormones. They can support uterine health post-partum, follicle-oocyte development, the luteal phase and embryo development.”

Vortex appoints exclusive dealer for South Korea

Vortex Global, a solids and bulk handling components company, has recently announced the appointment of TSP (Total Solution Provider) Korea as its new representative exclusive to South Korea. With this appointment, TSP Korea will be responsible for creating customer relationships, arranging site visits, and following up on Vortex customer inquiries received in South Korea.

Woo Kyun Kim receives poultry nutrition research award

Woo Kyun Kim, Ph.D., has received the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA)-Poultry Science Association (PSA) Poultry Nutrition Award.

'Dr Kim's breadth of experience and research in the area of gut health make him an excellent recipient of this award,' said Paul Davis, Ph.D., AFIA's director of quality, animal food safety and education. 'The field of poultry nutrition is better off thanks to his passion and dedication.'

Dr Kim, an associate professor and poultry nutritionist in the Department of Poultry Science at the University of Georgia teaches feed and feeding, poultry nutrition and vitamins in animal nutrition. He also serves as a section editor for Poultry Science.

He is recognised for his work focusing on the roles of pre- and probiotics, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes on growth/laying performance, nutrient digestibility of feed ingredients, feed nutrient utilisation, intestinal development, gut health, immunity and bone health in poultry.

Dr Kim has published 124 peer-reviewed papers, 17 proceedings and symposium papers and 123 abstracts and obtained over $12 million in extramural funding from a wide variety of organisations. He holds a doctorate and master's degree in nutritional science and poultry science, respectively, from Pennsylvania State University and a bachelor's degree in animal science from KonKuk University in South Korea. He also served as a postdoctoral fellow from Texas A&M University and the University of California - Los Angeles.

The recognition is sponsored by AFIA as part of its ongoing awards program that began in 1948. To date, 69 people have been awarded the poultry science nutrition award.

GEAPS and K-State online courses now available

Registration is now open for four online courses from the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) and Kansas State University Distance Education Program in August. These online courses run from August 4th through September 8th and registration closes July 29th.  
 


GEAPS 500: Introduction to Grain Handling Operations
This course is a great way to get a new hire and non-operations staff up to speed on the industry. Participants will learn about different types of elevators and how grain moves through a facility.  The course covers the most common hazards at facilities and emphasizes safety in all operations.

GEAPS 501: Management Basics for Grain Facility Supervisors
Managing grain facilities is a complex job with many responsibilities. New and upcoming supervisors can learn the main duties, responsibilities and expectations of grain operations managers over 11 lectures.  This course provides a broad overview of policies, safety management, basic accounting, inventory management and more.

GEAPS 542: Electrical Safety for Grain and Processing Facilities
This course will help keep your team safe by explaining electrical safety and how it relates to fires and explosions in facilities. Participants will learn how to do an audit at their facility and hire qualified electrical contractors.

GEAPS 550: Materials Handling I
The properties of the commodities at your facility affect everything from facility design to types of equipment you need. GEAPS 550 is the first of a three-part series that examines the properties of different materials. It will teach you how to select the right types of bins, spouting and screw conveyors for your facility.

Christiane Girard receives AFIA-ADSA nutrition research award

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has congratulated Christiane Girard, Ph.D., of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, for receiving the 2020 AFIA-American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) Nutrition Research Award. The associations recognised Dr Girard during the virtual ADSA annual meeting earlier this week.

Created to honour outstanding research in dairy cattle nutrition, the award recognises an individual who has made a worthy contribution to dairy cattle nutrition research within the 10 years immediately prior to the year of the award.

Dr Girard is a research scientist at the Sherbrooke Research and Development Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Her work on B vitamins has challenged the generally accepted concept that dairy cows' vitamin requirements for B vitamins do not have to be taken into account because their synthesis by the rumen microflora is sufficient to prevent deficiency symptoms. Her work has made an outstanding contribution to improving the estimations of supply and requirements of B vitamins. In a perspective of precision farming to optimize metabolic efficiency, meeting dairy cows' requirements for B vitamins cannot be overlooked.

'Dr Girard's work with B vitamins has clearly led the path and made a tremendous impact on the dairy industry,' said Paul Davis, Ph.D., AFIA's director of quality, animal food safety and education. 'Her passion and dedication toward improving dairy nutrition made her a great choice for this year's award.'

Previously, she served as an associate professor with the Department of Animal Science and Faculty of Agricultural Food Science at Laval University in Canada.

The recognition is sponsored by AFIA as part of its ongoing awards program that began in 1948. To date, 73 people have been awarded the dairy science nutrition award.

Grinding challenging recipes for premium pet food? Pre-crushing protects your process and saves energy!

Design an optimised multi-stage grinding solution
As a specialist in grinding technology, Tietjen Verfahrenstechnik always keeps an eye on the size reduction of mixed raw materials, especially in challenging applications such as pet food and aqua feed. Together with our worldwide customers and partners, we continue to optimise and search for the economically best solutions for targeted crushing according to customer requirements. Since 1959, Tietjen has been building hammer mills and individual grinding solutions in Hemdingen near Hamburg.
 


To ensure that our customers achieve even better grinding results, we have recently also been looking more closely at optimising the pre-grinding process.  Good grinding depends on the one hand on the technical design of the hammer mill itself (sieve surface, impact surface, motorisation, speed and sieve perforation) and on the other hand on the aspiration of the mill (air volume flow, air speed, filter type, filter surface). The grinding plant itself can only be optimally operated with appropriate, load-dependent controlled dosing of the input material. However, other components of a good overall system - such as the pre-crushing system discussed here - also contribute to improved results.

Why pre-crushing?

If raw material components are simply too hard for the fine grinding stage, then the grinding stage should be protected. Pre-grinding is then strongly recommended. This is especially true for recipes with legumes such as peas and beans and with sugar beet pellets.

For mixtures with a very wide grain spectrum, such as recipes for flours with legumes, pellets, cereals or rice, a pre-grinding for homogenisation for the further grinding process can be advantageous.  A homogeneous structure can be ground more efficiently. This prevents screen damage and increases the availability of the hammer mill - from a technical and economic point of view!

Pre-grinding guarantees the pre-crushing of hard ingredients with simultaneous homogenisation of the recipe, thereby optimally preparing the raw material for the actual fine grinding process.

Imas launch innovative feed mill with modular design

Imas, a leading milling technology supplier, has developed a new feed mill type with modular design for the feed industry.

Viteral, a brand of Imas is developing solutions for the feed milling industry, started to offer its farm-type feed facility with a capacity of 2-3 tons per hour for its customers.

Ocrim to supply soft wheat milling system in Morocco

The CEO of Ocrim, Alberto Antolini, with part of the corporate team, have met with the management of Compagnie SABA, S.A., one of the biggest mills of North Africa and delivered a football signed by everyone who played a decisive part in negotiations which have concluded.

Ocrim has been contracted by Compagnie SABA, S.A. to build a 650 T/24h soft wheat milling system in a new building. Ocrim will be a full partner for the Moroccan company, as it will supply the entire system starting with reception, with a related wheat pre-cleaning line, all the way to the shipment of the finished product, with high-capacity bagging stations for products, by-products and granulates.

It will be a cutting edge plant, which foresees the supply of Ocrim advanced machines and latest-generation equipment, aiming to offer high efficiency when it comes to saving energy and from a sanitation point of view, as well as the supply of the plant automation and management system.

Ocrim will also introduce the modular system, which allows maintenance only on the machines concerned without stopping the entire line: this involves more productivity and flexibility in planning scheduled or emergency maintenance.

Amino acid balancing rather than crude protein is the cutting edge in dairy nutrition

Since the 1980s we have been using crude protein (CP) as a key element in ration formulation. As with other industries, when advances are made, they are incorporated into systems and practises. This is also the case for ration formulation.
 

With the mounting pressure to reduce soya usage as world demand increases, combined with the environmental impact of excess nitrogen protein excretion, it has never been a better time to explore the use of rumen protected amino acids (RP-AA). They not only help in addressing these key issues but also provide a range of benefits, such as increased production, improved milk quality, improved fertility and better general health of the animal. In mid-range CP diets, it is impossible to meet the Methionine (Met) and Lysine (Lys) requirements of the animal, therefore we cannot achieve maximum potential and optimum returns.

Amino acids have been used successfully for many years in the monogastric sector and it makes perfect sense that, with improving rumen protection technology (encapsulation and HMBi), along with higher bioavailability, they are also utilised more extensively in the ruminant sector. To maximise bioavailability the product must escape the rumen relatively intact (encapsulated products) and into the absorption sites (abomasum, small intestine) to achieve the highest possible transfer value. Dependant on the encapsulation technology and product core (particle size & functional specific gravity) the true bioavailability can be very different from product to product.

Methionine benefits are commonly known within the dairy industry but, when used in concert with Lysine, it provides additional benefits beyond individual component feeding. It is important that, when using these two RP-AA, they are fed at the correct quantity (g/hd/day), at the optimal proportion in relation to the metabolisable protein within the diet and at the correct ratio between Met to Lys. This will ensure optimal synergistic improvements.

AFIA invites industry newcomers to virtual feed industry institute

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has opened registration for its popular biennial Feed Industry Institute (FII), which will be offered in a self-paced, virtual learning environment over a span of a few weeks later this summer. The conference, which kicks off August 17th and runs until September 23rd, brings together industry newcomers to learn the fundamentals of the animal food manufacturing process – from the types of ingredients used to the animals served to federal policies that shape the output of the industry.

'The Feed Industry Institute is a great educational forum where people who are new to the livestock feed or pet food industries can learn more about the business of animal food from those who know it best — industry experts,' said Paul Davis, Ph.D., AFIA's director of quality, animal food safety and education. "Our goal is that attendees not only understand how to manufacture high-quality animal food, but why doing so is so essential for animal productivity and well-being.'
 


Typically a weeklong conference, the 2020 FII has been revamped into a virtual learning environment in light of current public health concerns and travel restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. FII officially opens on August 17th, when attendees will be invited to sign in to the online platform and watch nearly 30 lectures – at their leisure – from highly acclaimed experts in the field. Attendees must complete the lectures by September 23rd, when AFIA will hold a live webinar with attendees to answer questions, recap the presentations and conduct a graduation ceremony.

There will be plenty of opportunities for attendees to engage with the material, such as through quizzes, and with each other. Upon registration, AFIA will invite participants to join a private group on social media, where they can network, discuss the course content and get to know their industry colleagues.

'At AFIA, we recognise that COVID-19 has changed how we communicate with one another, but it should not be the stumbling block for those new to the industry looking to start their careers off on the right foot,' said Veronica Rovelli, AFIA's senior director of meetings and events. 'We are committed to meeting people where they are – whether that be physically distanced or career stage – so they can learn the essentials, build their professional networks and put their best foot forward.'

The 2020 FII will include an overview of the US feed industry, animal physiology and nutrition basics, information on the types of ingredients used in animal food and why, the role of medications and other additives, and various processing techniques. It will also look at agriculture's role in building consumer trust, the role of international trade and provide an overview of state and federal regulations. AFIA encourages people to register between now and July 22nd to receive the special one-time discounted rate of $300 for AFIA members and $650 for non-members. After that, the rate raises to $450 for AFIA members and $850 for non-members.

Hamlet Protein strengthens NCA distribution relationships

Hamlet Protein, market leader in specialty proteins for young animal nutrition, announced the renewal of existing distribution partnerships and the start of new ones in Canada, Mexico and Central America. Based in Findlay, Ohio, the American branch of multinational Hamlet Protein has been steadily increasing its production capacity, technical and commercial resources. The company aims to increase its leading position in swine nutrition and has made a successful entrance in the poultry market.

The NCA region (North and Central America) combines some of the world's top feed producing countries, with 215 MMt produced in the US, 37 MMt in Mexico and 30 MMt in Canada. Hamlet Protein increased the production capacity in Findlay, Ohio with the completion of a new production line earlier this year, and is targeting growth across the region.

Canada has long been a target market for Hamlet Protein. It renewed its already successful partnership with Jefo Canada, with the aim to increase market share in the monogastrics segment.

To be closer to customers in the Spanish speaking geographies in the NCA region, Hamlet Protein established a distribution relationship with Jefo Mexico and partnered with Profil in Central America. Distribution agreements were signed for Profil's group companies in El Salvador (Servicios Tecnicos Avicolas); Honduras (Profilaxis) and Guatemala (Profilaxis).
