VIV Asia 2023: AMANDUS KAHL Presents Machine Portfolio for Feed Production

As a machine and plant engineering expert for the feed industry, AMANDUS KAHL will again be represented at this year's VIV Asia in Thailand. From March 8 to 10, the German company from Reinbek near Hamburg will present in Bangkok its machines such as pellet mill, expander and crushing roller mill especially for the various feed production processes.

With around 1,245 exhibitors from 62 countries, VIV Asia is one of the most important exhibitions for the feed and food industry in Asia. The spectrum of topics at this trade show covers feed production, animal husbandry and breeding, as well as the processing of food of animal origin. This year's focal points in the area of animal nutrition are hygienisation and better utilisation of animal feed. The machine portfolio of AMANDUS KAHL reflects all these topics.

For example, AMANDUS KAHL will present a 3D model on a scale of 1:5 of the pellet mill 60-1250, which was specially developed for feed production. As an expert in the construction of flat die pellet mills, the company has been developing pellet mills for a wide range of applications since the mid-1920s, above all for the animal feed industry. This pellet mill is specially designed for products of different structure, density, binding power or size. The variety of production options ranges from compound feed that meets the specific needs of the animals to the preservation of green forage that is rich in nutrients.

From classic to all-rounder

The crushing roller mill technology revised by AMANDUS KAHL enables individual recipes in compound feed production. Thanks to flexible setting options, individual feed components such as grain and legumes can be ground as desired so that the results always optimally meet the needs of the respective animal species. Whether breaking, cutting, crushing or grinding - the crushing roller mill combines a wide range of possibilities in just one machine. At the same time, the energy input is significantly lower compared to that of the hammer mill.

The expander is an all-rounder for a higher feed quality. It is not only the ideal machine for mixing and kneading different components, but also for homogenisation, agglomeration and short-time conditioning. Through the interaction of moisture, temperature and pressure, the technology positively influences the nutritional, hygienic and physical properties of compound feed. Pathogenic germs can be reliably eliminated and the digestibility of individual nutrients can be increased through specific starch modification. The feed refined in this way is more homogeneous, easier soluble in water and at the same time tastier.

More detailed information about the functions and advantages of the different KAHL machines can be obtained directly at booth 3010 in hall 2.

Anpario launches new 'ammonium formate free' product range

Anpario, the independent manufacturer and international distributor of natural, sustainable feed additives for animal health, nutrition and biosecurity, is excited to announce the launch of a new product range.

(CC BY 2.0)
The new products have been developed to comply with recent changes to the (EC) 1831/2003 register, formulated to be free from ammonium formate and will sit within Anpario's well-established Acid Based Eubiotic (ABE) and Feed Hygiene ranges. Ammonium formate is most commonly associated with the production of buffered organic acids, an additive frequently utilised in livestock diets across Europe. The recent changes to the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU 2022/415) no longer permits its use in the following species; laying hens, sows, dairy ruminants, pets and non-food producing animals.

'Our new range of ammonium formate free products will enable those producers impacted by the regulatory changes to have a seamless transition to an alternative product, without impacting their performance and profitability as is associated with our consistently high-quality products,' comments Richard Edwards, CEO of Anpario.

The new range of products are readily available from Anpario's European warehouse, which was established in 2021 to support Anpario's continued expansion within the region and ensure fast, efficient distribution to customers.

Anpario's innovative feed additives are developed and produced from our quality assured manufacturing plant in the UK. With over 30 years of expertise in the agricultural sector, they have worked with key research institutes and universities across the world to provide innovative, cutting-edge technologies to help customers achieve optimum animal performance, with a good return on investment, helping to boost profitability in today's modern livestock production systems.

Bühler expands TUBO conveyor line with a new 8-inch tube for higher capacity

Swiss technology group Bühler announces the launch of a new 8-inch TUBO tubular push conveyor. With the new solution customers in malting and brewing, milling, coffee, oat flakes, and animal feed processing industries can benefit from an increase of 80 percent of throughput capacity, reaching up to 43 tons per hour.

'The new addition builds on the success of the revolutionary TUBO system with push technology. With the new 8-inch tubes we offer a system for an even broader range of applications with higher capacity requirements,' says Stefan Anshelm, Product Manager Grain Quality & Supply at Bühler. Up to now, the system has been available with tubes in 5-inch and 6-inch diameters with a throughput ranging from 12 tons per hour to 24 tons per hour. The new TUBO with 8-inch tubes allows for capacities of 40 to 43 tons per hour. The system transports products gently over distances of up to 50 meters in all directions. 'With lighter loads and fewer bends in the system's configuration this can be increased to 70 meters,' says Markus Huber, Product Engineer at Bühler.

Pushing instead of pulling
Like previous releases the new 8-inch TUBO follows the simple and effective principle of pushing instead of pulling. Loose pusher elements called TUBITs are pushed inside the tubular construction moving material gently from inlets to outlets.

'The TUBO concept has many advantages over conventional pneumatic systems or mechanical conveyors such as bucket and chain conveyors. These conventional systems require more space, more conveying components to transport material in different directions, and additional explosion protection such as decoupling devices,' says Mr Anshelm.

Low energy consumption and maximum flexibility
The TUBO significantly lowers energy consumption through reduced friction in the conveying process and offers maximum flexibility and efficiency in the setup and retrofit of plants. Its unique push technology allows configurations in three dimensions. Thanks to its modest space requirements TUBO also reduces investments in building costs.

More flexibility and higher levels of food safety
Thanks to the modular construction and low weight of individual components the system can be easily assembled by a small team. The plug and play TUBO comes equipped with its own controls and is fully operational within a minimum of time.

Low transportation speeds prevent damage to the conveyed goods. The TUBO transports sensitive materials at speeds as low as 0.2 to 0.3 meters per second. This is ideal for sensitive products such as coffee.

Conveying products with TUBO ensures a system free of residues. As some dust can build up over time, a specially designed drive station enables the removal of particles during operation. This is particularly important for operators that use one conveying line for different products and need to avoid contamination.

TUBO has proven its reliability in operation at many plants around the world. Offering great cost savings, flexible design, gentle product handling while maintaining highest sanitation and safety standards, TUBO helps operators in several industries to improve the efficiency of their production lines.

'With the option for greater capacity, the TUBO is now available for even more applications in the brewing and malting, milling and related food and feed industries,' says Mr Anshelm. 'This means that even more customers can benefit from cost savings and unparalleled efficiency and flexibility.'

Trial results show pHorce from Anpario is effective against Seneca Valley Virus in pig herds

In an independent trial conducted at Pipestone Applied Research Facility in the US, pHorce from Anpario was found to be an effective mitigant against Seneca Valley virus, as well as Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea virus (PEDv) and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus (PRRSv).

Seneca Valley virus, also known as Senecavirus A, is a viral disease of pigs which is related to the family of viruses that cause foot-and-mouth disease. Historically, the majority of confirmed cases have been recorded in the US, however more recently cases of Seneca Valley Virus have also emerged in other countries, including England as of 2022. The virus causes vesicular lesions which usually appear around the coronary band and in or around the snout and nares. Lameness is also commonly reported and crusting of the hoof wall may also be observed.

Whilst the virus is not notifiable or reportable in the UK, nor is it a listed disease by the World Organisation of Animal Health, the clinical signs do resemble that of notifiable diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease. This can lead to significant financial losses as a result of temporary closure until notifiable diseases are ruled out and also reallocation of financial resources towards diagnostic investigation.

Therefore, minimising outbreak and spread of the virus is in the interest of pig producers globally. In a recent trial, the triple action feed mitigant pHorce from Anpario has been shown to be an effective viral mitigant. Pigs were challenged with Seneca Valley virus (SVA), PEDv and PRRSv via the feed using an 'ice block model'. In pigs fed pHorce supplemented diets, there were no clinical signs associated with any of the viruses compared to the control pigs, where 100 percent presented clinical symptoms. In addition, there was no evidence of SVA in pigs fed pHorce and supplemented pigs had a lower mortality and an average daily gain which was double that of the control fed pigs.

pHorce is part of Anpario's Acid Based Eubiotic (ABE) range and is a concentrated blend of formic and propionic acid on a unique micropearl carrier delivery system which has been chosen to ensure maximum efficacy during feed manufacture and throughout the gastrointestinal tract of the animal.

BENEO extends animal nutrition portfolio with faba bean ingredients

BENEO, one of the leading manufacturers of functional ingredients, is pleased to announce the expansion of its product portfolio for aqua and livestock feed with the addition of the new faba bean ingredient range, including faba bean protein concentrate, starch-rich flour, and hulls. These pulse ingredients are non-GMO and represent sustainable sources of protein, starch, and fibre, enabling feed manufacturers to improve the nutritional profile of their products.

Aqua and livestock feed markets are increasingly raising consumers' concerns regarding sustainability and are coming under greater scrutiny from authorities. As a result, many feed producers have committed to ambitious targets to meet these changing requirements. Demand for a more eco-conscious feed sector is also reflected in the sustainability objectives of key industry associations. At the same time, with rising concerns around the environmental impact of raw materials, producers are also facing present and future price pressures, alongside logistical and supply issues. This is driving demand for sustainable ingredients, such as locally produced plant-based alternatives, that can deliver both a good nutritional profile and improved technical properties.

When it comes to sustainability, faba beans help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at farm level. The faba beans can capture nitrogen from the air, to provide it for themselves and subsequent plants, which reduces the need for fertiliser input. Also, the faba beans are grown in a German region with good rainfall and soil with good water retention capacity, so that irrigation is not necessary. BENEO strives to source its faba beans at Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) Gold level from German farmers with long-term contracts, to ensure production and supply stability. Furthermore, the production process, being done locally in Germany, has been chosen for its low energy and water consumption in comparison to alternative processes; overall contributing to BENEO's sustainability targets.

Faba bean ingredients are showing promising potential for aqua and livestock recipe formulations as they are a good source of protein, starch and dietary fibre. BENEO's faba bean protein concentrate, starch-rich flour and hull ingredients are produced from faba bean varieties which are low in antinutritional factors (e.g., tannins, vicine and convicine) and are guaranteed to be non-GMO.

BENEO's faba bean starch-rich flour offers producers of livestock and aqua feed a good source of starch and energy, while still containing a significant residual amount of protein of approximately 20 percent. It is ideal for use in many applications, including for salmon and trout, as well as in broilers' starter and piglets' weaner diets. Also, thanks to its good solubility and rather low iron content, it could be applied in liquid feed like calf milk replacers.

BENEO's faba bean protein concentrate is a concentrated source of vegetal protein that serves as a good alternative to e.g., animal and soy proteins. It has excellent solubility in comparison to other vegetal proteins and a good amino acid profile.

BENEO's faba bean hulls can be used to provide a source of insoluble fibres in feed for ruminants or gestating sows, while also offering certain protein and starch contents which increase its nutritional value.

The faba bean hulls and protein concentrate are listed in the EU Catalogue of Feed Materials, while faba bean starch-rich flour is in the EU Feed Materials Register.

Karel Thurman, Commercial Director Animal Nutrition at BENEO comments, 'Manufacturers of pet food and feed are increasingly faced with the challenge of finding ingredients that deliver the necessary nutrients for their formulas, whilst also complying with ambitious commitments towards sustainability. Our new plant-based faba bean ingredients are a valuable addition to our portfolio, as they provide convincing sustainability credentials and offer producers in the livestock and aquafeed industries sound nutritional and technological alternatives for their feed recipes.'

Icos and Bühler connect dozens of start-ups and corporates to accelerate sustainability

Climate tech venture capital fund, Icos Capital, held the 'Accelerating Sustainability Food Systems Summit' at Bühler's CUBIC Innovation Campus on February 14, 2023. The event brought together promising start-ups from the areas of decarbonisation, precision fermentation, cell culture, and side stream valorisation & alternate sustainable resources with top food corporations to accelerate the transition of sustainable food systems. The partners intend to grow their ecosystem of collaboration and innovation to enable start-ups to scale up their efforts in tackling some of the most urgent and complex challenges in the food sector.

'Our goal at Icos Capital is to identify and invest in next-level innovations to accelerate sustainability. Our model of collaborative venturing brings start-ups specialised in sustainable food, circular economy, sustainable industry, and decarbonisation into win-win partnerships with corporates, supporting their growth,' says Nityen Lal, General Partner at ICOS Capital. The start-ups Icos backed since 2006 have disrupted and led their respective markets and have benefited from the Icos approach of considering financial, social, and environmental returns in equal measure. 'The event here at Bühler's CUBIC Innovation Campus was everything we expected it to be: forward-thinking entrepreneurs with brilliant ideas to solve major problems, investors ready to identify the next start-up to push forward, and industry partners equipped with the know-how and technology to accelerate positive impact at scale,' adds Mr Lal.

Accelerating impact at scale
Over 30 start-ups from across Europe, the UK, and Israel pitched their innovations and discussed collaborations with corporations, sparking mutually beneficial partnerships going forward. 'We're delighted to play a role in strengthening this collaborative venturing approach to scale impactful innovation,' says Ian Roberts, CTO of Bühler. The leading solution partner for the food and mobility industries works with selected partners, such as ICOS, to build a global network of partnerships that support the transition to a sustainable food system and support industry adoption of new sustainable solutions and practices. 'With established supply chains and market access, we believe that corporates in the room can play a crucial role in the journey of start-ups and enable them to scale both their business and their sustainable impact significantly faster,' adds Mr Roberts.

Finding new ways
Icos and Bühler see technology readiness levels increasing and positive changes in the market in sidestream utilisation and precision fermentation especially. NapiFeryn, one of the Icos portfolio companies, have developed a patented process to obtain rapeseed proteins from the sidestream of oil pressing. This process of extracting a high value product from a low-cost raw material raised a lot of interest from a range of food companies in the room. 'We're looking forward to taking our business to the next level with the right partnerships. This event is a unique opportunity to connect with companies that can offer know-how and technology to scale up our production,' says Dr Magdalena Kozlowska, CEO and Founder at NapiFeryn.

Another example from the portfolio is Holiferm, who are bringing price-competitive biosurfactants to market, a key ingredient in cleaning and personal care products. Holiferm aims to improve the sustainability of its products even more and become carbon neutral. To do that they need bio-based resources such as oils and sugars as input for the fermentation process in their new commercial plant; something they discussed with companies who have access to sidestreams that may be used as raw materials for Holiferm. 'The new connections we made here will help us accelerate our journey towards more sustainable and nature-friendly chemicals,' says Joana Pereira, Business Development Manager at Holiferm.

The journey continues
The 'Accelerating Sustainability Food Systems Summit' event was an early highlight for Icos in 2023. Their search together with Bühler for high potential, sustainable start-ups continues. 'We're always looking to expand our network and encourage Climate Tech entrepreneurs ready to scale in the food industry to contact us directly at info@icoscapital.com,' says Katarzyna Gil, FoodTech and AgriTech Analyst at Icos.

The IAOM MEA Regional Forum 2023 was a success!

The IAOM MEA Regional Forum 2023 took place in the historical city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. It enjoyed a record participation of 165 participants from 61 entities and 18 countries and was a huge success.

The program covered three main topics. On the first day, the topic was focused on 'Wheat Handling & Safe grain storage'. The presentations highlighted the essentials in grain storage as well as the solution how to conserve grain in good quality. The experts in grain storage underlined that grain is a living organism and as such undergoes a bio-chemical process during storage. The main challenges are heat generation, condensation and pest control. A proper pre-cleaning but more to that, the know-how of appropriate aeration and storage management is key for safe storage.

The second day was covering the subject 'Milling Technology & good Milling Practice'. Understanding the design of a mill flow is a prerequisite to operate a milling plant. The presentation on Key Milling Equipment and Operation gave valuable inputs on the best milling practice to achieve ultimate efficiency. A common practice to keep the milling process at all times in the best balance is the break release as well as the sample table. Valuable insights about taking care for the sieves and the grinding rolls rounded up this topic.

The third day was dedicated to the topic of 'Finished Product Handling & Quality Control'. Safety elements such as a control sifter, magnet and impact machines are a must in a modern flour handling plant. But more to that, the blending or mixing plant assures the consistency of the flour. The analysis of the quality, in particular the starch gelatinisation, and enzymatic activity but as well as the gluten quantity and quality was well explained. An insight was given into the possibilities of flour correction with the different additives in particular enzymes.

The presentations were on a high professional level with vibrant interaction between the speakers and the participants. Summarised as: 'Experts talked to Experts'.

All participants are very ecstatic about the upcoming 33rd IAOM MEA Conference & Expo 2023, scheduled to take place in mid-November in Cairo, Egypt. The exact dates and venue will be announced in the first week of March.
