Cereals agronomy exhibitors preview plots

Cereals exhibitors gathered at the new Thoresby site on 20 April to view their crop plots and discuss plans for the event on 13-14 June.

With 6ha of plots growing a wide range of crops, there was plenty to see, and Jonathan Backhouse, arable project manager at Cereals, said they are growing well so far. “We had a kind autumn and good conditions for drilling. It was a kind winter up until the period after Christmas when we had some late frosts,” he said. “Recent rainfall has been welcome on the sandy land here.”

Mark Carter, co-owner at BioNature, is exhibiting at Cereals for the second time. “Last year we had a real success and so much interest. This year we’ve raised our game and have trial plots of oilseed rape (OSR) and wheat,” he said.

“We are looking at where we use Delta – nitrogen in a special form which encourages rooting, tillering and stem strength. It is applied at T0, T1 and T2, saving extra passes. We can tell differences in evenness of wheat and branching of OSR already.”

KWS will showcase its ‘wheels’ of winter wheat, winter barley, spring wheat and spring barley at Cereals, a feature which proved popular last year. New Recommended List spring wheat varieties Alicium and Harsum, and new RL spring malting barley variety, Curtis, will also be on display at KWS’s stand, said the firm’s technical specialist Olivia Potter.

“We had brilliant success last year at Cereals – it was the first time we were back after a break. It was really good for getting farmer contact and we are looking forward to that aspect this year.”

As well as cereals, there will also be trials of sugar beet, including Conviso Smart, treated and untreated for weed control, said Martin Brown, AgroServices manager at KWS. “We also have a virus yellows tolerant variety and a very exciting upcoming variety that’s tolerant to cercospora.”

NIAB is demonstrating options to support more resilient future arable systems. Visitors can look at a diverse range of the UK’s under-utilised and novel crops that may become more popular over the next few years, said Stuart Knight, director of agronomy at NIAB.

“With five herbal grazing ley mixtures alongside buckwheat, quinoa, grain maize, durum wheat, hybrid rye and triticale, growers have the option to view the crops above and below ground in the 20m long NIAB Soil Hole,” said Mr Knight.

Lee Bennett, managing director at RAGT Seeds – a recent returner to Cereals – is looking forward to the event. “We have a bit of everything. We have breeding plots with new and established varieties including wheat Group ones Skyfall and Illustrious and Group four Bairstow, and new two-row winter barley, Orcade. There are also plots containing barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) resistant and tolerant varieties.

“It is nice to see what’s out there and meet the competition. Cereals is a great networking event.”

Farmers looking to get the most out of their fertiliser use have access to a new nitrogen efficiency optimiser, widely available across the UK and Ireland for the first time this year, said Alex Nichols, marketing manager at Corteva.

“BlueN is a biostimulant containing a naturally available bacteria that enables crops, including cereals, oilseed rape and maize to fix nitrogen from the air and make it available throughout the plant’s lifecycle. Farmers will be able to view crop plots treated with BlueN and talk to Corteva’s experts on the stand over both days.”

DSV is celebrating its 100th anniversary at Cereals and will be showcasing barley variety, Sensation, which is resistant to BYDV and barley mosaic virus types one and two.

Cereals is always a place where visitors can learn best practice and Cereals host Gregor Pierrepont, partner at Thoresby Farming and Estate, is also looking forward to the social element, where visitors can catch up with familiar faces.

Ÿnsect and the LOTTE R&D Centre sign an MoU

Ÿnsect, the world leader in insect production, signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the LOTTE R&D centre, a Korean leader in the Tech industry. The MOU was signed by Guillaume Daoulas, Ÿnsect Food & Plant Sales Director, in the presence of Cho Juhyeon, Korean Vice-Minister for SMEs and Startups, at the “France – Korea” event organized by French Tech and the French Embassy in Korea on April 26th.

The agreement includes conducting joint research to develop insect-based food products, working together to increase knowledge of edible insects’ health claims, and conducting and sharing surveys on “insects in human food” among consumers in Europe and South Korea. This partnership will enable Ÿnsect to accelerate its development in human food and expand its activity in Asia.

The MOU between Ÿnsect and the LOTTE R&D centre represents a significant milestone in the development of insect-based food products and highlights the importance of cooperation between France and Korea in the Tech industry.

“The signing of this MOU with the LOTTE R&D center, the Korean leader, is a major step forward in Ynsect’s development. We aim to accelerate our presence in high value-added markets, with natural, healthy and sustainable ingredients. Through LOTTE R&D center, we now benefit from the support of a key player to better understand the different markets in which we are establishing ourselves across the Asian continent and thus be able to meet the demand for local proteins,” says Guillaume Daoulas, Ÿnsect Food & Plant Sales Director.

Ÿnsect aims to accelerate its presence in high value-added markets with natural, healthy, and sustainable ingredients – this partnership is a clear step in this direction. Lee Gyeong Hweon, president at the LOTTE R&D centre, believes that insect proteins are a key option to meet the food and climate challenges of our time, and Asia is already keen on insect-based foods for human nutrition.

In a 2011 report, the FAO highlighted that to feed the planet by 2050 we will have to produce 70 percent more ingredients with only five percent of available land. The FAO already mentioned insects as a solution. Ten years later, with its industrial know-how and scientific knowledge, Ÿnsect began developing the human food market.

Insects are an environmentally sustainable and healthy protein source that can meet the world’s food and climate challenges. Studies conducted by Maastricht University show that mealworm proteins are as beneficial as milk proteins in terms of digestion, nutrition, absorption, and muscle production. Additionally, the protein content of insects is naturally high, requires 30 times less land, emits 40 times fewer CO2 emissions than beef, and uses 40 times less water than pork.

UK’s largest farmer buying groups form alliance to deliver purchasing efficiency

Today, Fram Farmers Ltd, Woldmarsh Producers Ltd and AF Group Ltd have announced a new collaborative procurement initiative – Agri Procurement Alliance Ltd (APA).

This exciting new initiative aims to secure better value to the farmer and landowner memberships of the three largest cooperative buying groups by leveraging the strength and influence of their combined 6000 members. All three groups, each with their own unique operational methods, have a common purpose – to improve margins for their members and build stronger relationships with the supply chain.

“Profound changes are taking place in the agricultural supply sector as we adjust to a post-Brexit marketplace, and transition from an EU to UK agricultural policy platform. These changes bring opportunities, challenges and new priorities for farm procurement,” explains Stuart McKenzie, APA chairman.

“It has therefore never been more important for farmers to adapt to this disruption, and work together through their cooperative buying groups. APA is a response to these challenges and the continuing consolidation of the agri supply chain, including manufacture and distribution.”

From 26th April 2023, APA will set strategy for the purchase of specific products, utilising the collective strength of the new alliance to build stronger relationships with the supply chain. Initially, APA will be focused exclusively on the fertiliser market – negotiating procurement terms, collation of market intelligence and new product innovation, and sharing this with the three buying groups.

“Despite significant individual growth in membership numbers, cooperation between the groups provides an opportunity to make a step-change in size, bringing the total to over 6,000 members. We are confident this will elevate discussions with suppliers to another level, bringing benefits to both members and suppliers,” Mr McKenzie adds.

“APA will be solely focused on working with suppliers, to optimise volumes and deliver more efficient forecasting, planning and enhanced procurement. There will be no change in how the individual buying groups support and serve their members, who will continue to receive distinctive value, service and advice.”

Each of the groups, as shareholders, will hold an equal proportion of the equity of APA, with two directors representing each of the shareholders on the board of the new alliance:

Australia registers BLUEFUME™ as an environmentally sustainable structural fumigation option

Draslovka Holdings a.s. welcomes the approval by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) of the use of BLUEFUME™, marking an important step forward for the environmental impact of the pest control industry in Australia.

BLUEFUME™ is a highly effective, cost efficient, environmentally sustainable alternative structural fumigation product for use in places like factories, mills, silos, warehouses and ships. It directly replaces existing products such as sulfuryl fluoride which have a detrimental environmental impact. BLUEFUME™, which breaks down into naturally occurring substances, offers Australian companies who have traditionally used archaic fumigants as part of their pest management programs an environmentally sustainable alternative, enabling them to significantly reduce their emissions on their path to carbon neutrality.

In response to the Montreal Protocol, agreed nearly three decades ago, the pest control industry took steps to phase out its use of methyl bromide, a prolific ozone depleting substance. In its place, fumigators turned to using sulfuryl fluoride which, whilst effective, is a synthetic greenhouse gas with a global warming potential more than 4000 times that of carbon dioxide. Today, a further step change is needed to ensure the industry remains sustainable into the long term by deploying effective, environmentally sustainable alternatives to legacy products. 

BLUEFUME™ has been approved for use in the European Union and is a preferred treatment option in France, Germany, South Africa, and New Zealand. As such, Australia has now joined a growing list of countries committed to upholding their multilateral environmental commitments under the Montreal Protocol and Paris Agreement.

Sumitomo Corporation signs an MoU valued at over $100m with Nutrition Technologies for distribution in Japan

Sumitomo Corporation has signed an MoU agreement with Nutrition Technologies with a portfolio valued at over US$100m. The MoU allows Sumitomo to distribute Nutrition Technologies products into the Japanese market for use in a range of sectors, including petfood and aquafeed products. Sumitomo Corporation is an existing investor of Nutrition Technologies and is strategically aligned to the company’s mission of sustainably feeding the global population through a circular economy. 

Sumitomo Corporation recognises the advantage of Nutrition Technologies’ low-energy, tropical production technology compared to other manufacturers of insect-based products. With the growing demand for food and increasing pressure on protein supply, Sumitomo Corporation sees the need for more sustainable products and the opportunity presented by Nutrition Technologies products, which are made from Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL).

USDA announces new National Institute of Food and Agriculture Director

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announces the appointment of Manjit K. Misra as the new Director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). The NIFA Director leads the agency’s work in advancing agricultural research, education, and extension to solve societal challenges. Dr Misra will start his new role on Monday, May 8, 2023.

“Dr Misra is an esteemed scientist and educator whose devotion to studying and sharing his knowledge of seeds with the world will benefit society and inspire generations to come,” says Secretary Tom Vilsack. “I am confident he will bring strong leadership and expertise to USDA as we continue our work to invest in and grow initiatives that ensure the long-term viability of agriculture and food systems.”

“We are excited to add Dr Misra’s leadership and expertise to our team as we continue to transform our nation’s food and agricultural system,” says Chavonda Jacobs-Young, USDA Chief Scientist and Research, Education, and Economics Under Secretary. “NIFA, with its unique research, education, and Extension partnerships, and the current unprecedented investments we have toward building the next generation of ag professionals, is well positioned to address the complex challenges we face in agriculture.”

Prior to joining USDA, Dr Misra served as a Professor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University. For more than 30 years, he was Director of the university’s Seed Science Center. The centre has administered the National Seed Health System, authorised by USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, since 2001. Dr Misra also was founding Director of the Iowa State’s Biosafety Institute for Genetically Modified Agricultural Products.

In 2012, Dr Misra was appointed Chair of the USDA National Genetic Resources Advisory Council (NGRAC), a position he held until 2017. Dr Misra has served on more than 60 local, national, and international boards and committees. These include the Steering Committee for the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) International Conference on Biotechnology, the Scientific Advisory Council of the American Seed Research Foundation, the Board of Directors of the Iowa Seed Association, the Iowa Crop Improvement Association, and the First the Seed Foundation.

Dr Misra is the recipient of several awards for leadership, including the “Distinguished Service Award” from the American Seed Trade Association, the “Order of the Knoll Faculty Award” from Iowa State University, the “Global Agricultural Leadership Award” from the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture, the Sukup Global Food Security award, a certificate of appreciation from the Secretary of Agriculture and the AE50 award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE).

Dr Misra earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering in India, a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a researcher with 137 publications and an innovator with ten patents. During his tenure as the Director of the Seed Science Center, the faculty and staff conducted seed programs in 79 countries, including 34 countries in Africa.

Mykola Solsky appealed to the G7 ministers to help in demining agricultural land

Ukraine needs international assistance in demining territories, including agricultural lands. This was emphasised by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Mykola Solskyi, during an online speech at the meeting of agriculture ministers of the G7 countries, which is being held in Japan.

According to him, 470,000 hectares of agricultural land in Ukraine are now mined. So far, only 17.5 percent of the mined territories have been surveyed, of which 57,000 hectares are for agricultural purposes.

“The process of demining the liberated territories does not stop. But this process is complicated and will stretch for decades. To date, more than 2,600 sappers from state and private structures carry out demining in Ukraine. With such capacity, it will take us more than 20 years to clear only agricultural land,” the Minister emphasised.

He also emphasised that Ukraine urgently needs special equipment to speed up rumination. Noting that the sapper manually clears 15-20 square meters. m per day, and demining equipment – six square meters. km and at the same time, maximum safety for sappers is preserved.

“We have an urgent need for technical equipment for demining. We understand exactly what this technique is and how much it is needed. And here we hope for your help,” Mykola Solskyi addressed his colleagues.

He emphasised that international support will speed up the demining process and save the lives of Ukrainians who are forced to take daily risks.

“Among the farmers, there are brave people who do not wait until it is their turn to clear mines. Some farmers demine the fields on their own, using metal detectors, at their own peril and risk,” Mykola Solskyi said.

He emphasised that Russia also caused problems with exports and logistics, led to rising prices, farmers’ lack of working capital and inability to pay loans, and loss of equipment. At the same time, Ukraine continues to provide grain to ensure the food security of the world. Almost 59 million tons of agricultural products have already been exported since the beginning of the war. Ukraine also carries out a humanitarian mission – Grain from Ukraine to support the poorest countries in the world. Since the initiative started, six ships with food have been sent. Four more are planned in the near future.

Minister of Agricultural Policy of Ukraine Mykola Solskyi held a meeting with Romanian Minister Petre Dea

The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Mykola Solsky, met in Bucharest with the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Romania, Petre Dea.

The ministers discussed the situation that arose as a result of the latest decisions of some countries neighboring Ukraine. The Romanian minister confirmed that the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products will move across the country as much as possible and the ways of solidarity will be preserved.

For his part, Mykola Solskyi thanked his colleague that Romania did not take a decision to ban the import of Ukrainian agricultural products.

The parties agreed on the need to wait for the decision of the European Commission and after that to discuss all other issues related to the import of agricultural products from Ukraine.

The parties discussed the situation that arose in connection with the decisions made, the Hungarian minister assured that the transit through their country will move quickly, efficiently and unhindered.

In addition, the Minister of Agriculture of Hungary announced that he supports the idea of compensation for the cost of transporting Ukrainian grain to European countries.

Nirvention offers a suite of products called triPAT ident, triPAT process and triPAT quant. The software reads the NIR spectrum of incoming raw materials inline, during production, and identifies real-time the exact material and determines the quality and nutritional values. For instance, upon the intake of raw materials, the system will evaluate the product and confirm or deny if the material is exactly what you ordered and if the quality meets the requirements. With the in-line product triPAT process, production run-waste can be significantly reduced. Bühler announces the launch of the next generation of its TAS grain cleaning system, the TAS LAAC. Cimbria expands its green coffee activities in South America

Cimbria is expanding its activities in South America, and the coffee branch is one of its most promising markets. Solutions for green coffee processing are important lines of business for Cimbria and have great potential for further expansion.

Since 2019, Cimbria has been strengthening its position in the green coffee processing market in South America. This move into South America is a natural expansion of Cimbria’s role as a key player in the global green coffee market. With approximately 80 percent market share in Ethiopia, Africa’s biggest producer of coffee, Cimbria’s experience is extremely valuable for the South American expansion.

“We focus on helping our clients grow their green coffee businesses in the best possible way. We focus on high-volume plants for coffee exporters, larger coffee cooperatives, and specialty coffee processing lines. Our Ethiopian success is built on solid and long-term representatives and customer relations with local service teams as one of the most vital parts of our business and a main reason for success. Thus, establishing local service teams in South America is also a vital part of our expansion plans,” explains Stefan Lautner, Cimbria Sales Manager in South America.

So far, Cimbria has completed projects for various green coffee processing plants in Central and South America, including a state-of-the-art processing plant for one of Mexico’s top coffee exporting companies and the most modern coffee processing plant in Peru for Café Selva Norte.

For the Peruvian project, Cimbria built a dry mill for coffee cooperatives that collects coffee from small producers. This dry mill allows small producers access to high quality processing equipment, resulting in higher-quality coffee, reduced post-harvest loss, and improved traceability.

“Our machinery uses highly precise separation to guarantee very high purity in the final product. When the cooperative or client finalises their specifications for each coffee delivery, the machinery is calibrated to achieve the highest output of their desired quality specifications,” explains Mr Lautner. 

He continues, “the Café Selva Norte dry mill has two processing lines. The processing flow includes pre-cleaning, destoning, hulling, gravity separation, and colour sorting, and in the end, the coffee beans are automatically being weighed and filled into bags.”

Cimbria and Café Selva Norte are working closely together to ensure quality and to adapt capacity to the continuously increasing demands.

EU-funded project paves path toward new era of protein sustainability

An ultra-sustainable new protein source made its debut at a meeting of European agrifood industry leaders and researchers in Turin, Italy on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. During the biannual gathering of partners in the EU-funded Plenitude project, consortium members were served mycoprotein-based “chicken style” filets, produced using bioprocess technology developed to address modern challenges of global protein sustainability. The tasting marks a key milestone toward the ingredient’s upcoming launch in European markets.

Mycoprotein is a highly nutritious food derived from fungi. While mycoprotein-based foods have been available for decades, food ingredient company ENOUGH led the Plenitude project’s development of a new technology that enables minimal-waste production by utilising renewable feedstock and upcycling its byproducts in a circular fermentation bioprocess. The result is ABUNDA—a B2B mycoprotein ingredient food manufacturers can use to create a broad range of clean label, nutritious, delicious food products.

“Achieving a new level of sustainable and scalable mycoprotein production was only half the battle. We also needed to ensure ABUNDA’s culinary performance and sensory attributes are best in class while making it affordable for consumers,” says Craig Johnston, cofounder and director of strategic partnerships at Enough. “We completed the construction of the flagship plant and are ready for scalable production. The results of today’s tasting, alongside the incredible products of our project partners, show we are truly entering a new era for protein-rich foods.”

The Turin meeting menu additionally featured dishes from global agrifood giants, flavour and fragrance specialists, and leading plant-based food companies, also partners in the Plenitude project committed to developing new-generation meat substitutes using ABUNDA:

· Global meat company ABP – No Pork Pieces
· Plant-based meat company Vivera – Shawarma Kebab
· Flavor and fragrance company IFF – “Beef” Rendang
· Global agrifood giant Cargill – Plant-based Burger

All menu items were prepared and served by Van Ver Burger, a traveling Italian food truck specialising in sustainable gastronomy.

“ABUNDA is one of the best plant-based chickens we have tried so far. Its taste and texture are just like real chicken. We love its versatility in applications and we can’t wait to have it on our menu,” says Pasquale Digiglio and Daniele Paradisi, cofounders and chefs at Van Ver Burger.

“Getting feedback from highly skilled chefs and foodservice operators—as well as consumers—is critical for validating the product and ensuring it can have the impact the world needs,” comments Michael Kilkie, head of culinary at Enough. “We focus on making Abunda so easy to cook that there is not much learning curve for chefs.”

The technology
Unlike plant proteins, mycoprotein utilises glucose as feedstock to grow fungal proteins in a fermentation process with strong nutritional and sensory profiles for meat substitutes. The Plenitude project’s core technology is centered around a novel integrated bioprocess for making mycoprotein. In Sas van Gent, Netherlands, the world’s first such facility has been built alongside a Cargill biorefinery producing bioethanol. The plant, operated by ENOUGH, utilises on-site glucose production, then returns its waste streams back to the biorefinery where they become bioethanol.

Sustainability
To assess the project’s sustainability, life cycle assessment consultancy Life Cycle Engineering will be conducting detailed analyses of the technology’s resource usage and potential for improving the environmental footprint of modern protein production. Preliminary results suggest that Abunda has significantly lower environmental impact than animal proteins.

Livestock Philippines 2023: Creating new opportunities for livestock, poultry, and aquaculture

The stage is set for the biggest and most comprehensive livestock show in the Philippines that will  take place on July 5-7, 2023, at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, Metro Manila. 

Livestock Philippines is known as a frontrunner international trade fair focusing on B2B for  livestock and poultry in the country. In its 12th year, Livestock Philippines continues to be a  comprehensive platform that creates new business opportunities, connects, and sustains  networks, and brings solutions to the entire agriculture industry in the Philippines. It expects to attract 300 local and international exhibitors who will showcase impressive displays of cutting edge technology for livestock, poultry, and aquaculture production. The show also expects to  welcome around 10,000 trade visitors across different regions in the Philippines including  international visitors. 

The theme this year highlights the ecosystem of livestock, poultry, and aquaculture production, and mainly focuses on food Safety, Security, and Sustainability. Highlighting the booming aquaculture sector in the Philippines 
The aquaculture sector significantly contributes in terms of food security in the country and  provides livelihood to the community. Thus, this year’s event becomes more relevant as it is a  concurrent event with Aquaculture Philippines, a side-pocket event that focuses on aquaculture nutrition, health, and production. It highlights a small pavilion of exhibiting companies with their products and services that are beneficial to the aquaculture sector.
