The 2012 Dairy Focus Asia took place in Bangkok on 8th and 9th February and Nuscience cattle specialist Nele Gyselinck was there to present new insights on the benefits of Aromabiotic Cattle.
Nuscience also introduced Shellbiotic at Victam Asia 2012 (15-17 February). The title of the presentation at Dairy Focus Asia was ‘Countering mastitis in early lactation with MCFAs’.

The importance of mastitis and the link between somatic cell count in the milk and white blood cells was explained. Novus brings out rumen booster

Novus International has brought out a plant extract product, Next enhance, that affects the rumen environment to improve nutritional uptake and efficiency, benefiting weight gain in cattle. Next enhance is a source of cinnamaldehyde and garlic oil (containing the active ingredient diallyl disulfide), which have been shown to favorably modify rumen fermentation.

This allows dietary carbohydrates and proteins to be more efficiently used by the animal. "This rumen effect leads to increased nutrient uptake or use which results in improved feed conversion and growth as well as reduced rumen waste products,” said Troy Wistuba, beef research manager for Novus.

USDA Announces New Highly Erodible Cropland Initiative

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced a new conservation initiative to protect up to 750,000 acres of the nation's most highly erodible croplands. Vilsack made the announcement via video to attendees of the National Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic, held February 17-19, in Kansas City, Mo. The new initiative will assist producers with targeting their most highly erodible cropland (land with an erodibility index of 20 or greater) by enabling them to plant wildlife-friendly, long-term cover through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).

Producers can enroll land on a continuous basis beginning this summer at their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office. With the use of soil survey and geographic information system data, local FSA staff can quickly determine a producer's eligibility for the initiative.

"As we work towards President Obama's vision for an economy that is built to last, America's natural resources must play an important role. Lands in CRP help support strong incomes for our farmers and ranchers and are the source of good middle class jobs related to outdoor recreation, hunting, and fishing," said Vilsack. "This announcement will strengthen CRP by focusing on protecting the most environmentally sensitive land. It targets limited resources where they can make the most difference for farmers, ranchers and to drive economic growth. Blaze at the Wallaroo silos Australia

Wallaroo silo

Fire fighters have extinguished a gantry blaze at the Wallaroo silos, preventing it from spreading to the grain. Crews arrived at the scene since before 6:00 am. the fire broke out in machinery which moves the conveyor belt to transport the grain. Locals were warned to keep well clear of the area because of the risk of an explosion. Police evacuated residents of the area near Chatfield Terrace, creating an 800-metre exclusion zone. A truck with a hydraulic ladder was sent from Adelaide to help tackle the fire. The same silos had a fire emergency in 2010. Read more ...

Yoghurt for piglets from Nutriscan

Among Danish piglet producers, it’s well known, that sour milk products as yoghurt has a beneficial impact on the intestinal function and hereby on the health and welfare of the piglets. That is why yoghurt products are widely used for piglets suffering from digestive disturbances, for large litters and in periods when the sow does not produce sufficient amount of milk in order to support a healthy growth, and at the same time to keep the use of antibiotics low, especially at weaning.

The new product, YoghurLac, from Nutriscan is designed to have the same texture and acidity as yoghurt products, when the 125 grams of the product is mixed into one litre of lukewarm water. Besides active lactic acid bacteria, YoghurLac contains high contents of milk powder and lactose, providing the piglets with easily absorbable nutrient at the same time as the milk acidification ensures a low pH in the intestinal tract and thus damaging E.coli and other gram negative bacteria. DDGS dietary calculating tools developed by several US universities

Distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are figuring highly in US pork producers' dietary supplements for their herds, by some estimations at five million tons.

Feed premixes grew by 60 percent in Russia during 2011

"Production of compound feed and feed products (premixes and concentrates) in Russia are growing steadily" Said Vladimir Manaenkov, head of the department of livestock feed and breeding of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, speaking at the conference "Mixed feeds and premixes 2011". Indeed, the feed production in Russia increased by nearly one million tons per year.

According to the forecast of Manaenkov, in the 2012 production rate in the country will account for 17.7 million tons of feed, in 2011 it was 17 million tons. According to the calculations of the Russian association of producers of feed, by 2013 production of feed relative to 2009 will have increased by 20.4 percent, protein-vitamin-mineral concentrates by 46.7 percent, premixes by 56.9percent. The US and China sign agreement of strategic co-operation

The US agriculture secretary and the Chinese minister of agriculture have signed an agreement a plan of strategic co-operation, a blueprint for the two countries' agricultural relationship for the next 5 years. The plan was signed as part of the US-China Agricultural Symposium held today at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates.

The symposium focused on bilateral cooperation in the areas of food safety, food security and sustainable agriculture, as well as enhanced business relationships between the two countries. "This symposium and plan are a product of a vision I share with my dear old friend Minister Han for the United States and China to work more collaboratively in the future to benefit our nations and agriculture around the world," Vilsack said. China agrees to purchase 10 percent of US soybean crop

Dioxin reassessment first part has been released by the EPA

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has published the first of two volumes of its response to the National Academy of Sciences 2006 report on the EPA's original dioxin reassessment. The document is the first of two EPA reports that, together, will respond to the recommendations and comments on 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin (TCDD) dose-response assessment included in the 2006 NAS report, Health Risks from Dioxin and Related Compounds: Evaluation of the EPA Reassessment.

The released document, Reanalysis Volume 1, includes (1) a systematic evaluation of the peer-reviewed epidemiologic studies and rodent bioassays relevant to TCDD dose-response analysis; (2) dose-response analyses using a TCDD physiologically based pharmacokinetic model that simulates TCDD blood concentrations following oral intake; and (3) an oral reference dose (RfD) for TCDD. BinMaster MultiBob Level Sensor System

BinMaster’s MultiBob inventory management system provides an average bin level from measurements taken by two up to 32 SmartBob2 or SmartBob TS-1 sensors installed on the top of a single bin, tank, silo or flat storage warehouse containing powders, granulars or bulk solid materials. The SmartBob sensors are strategically located in the vessel to monitor critical measuring points and using eBob software, are programmed to measure materials at scheduled time intervals or on demand. The advanced eBob software compiles the measurement data to calculate an average level or headroom and estimated percentage full.
MultiBob can be used to monitor levels in any storage bin or flat storage warehouse where a single measurement is not adequate to estimate inventory. Each SmartBob sensor precisely and reliably measures in the same location every time, detecting level changes as bins and warehouses are emptied or filled using trucks, loaders or conveyors. Large diameter bins, bins containing materials that tend to pile up, as well as bins with multiple filling and emptying points are common applications for MultiBob. Depending on the number and locations of SmartBob sensors mounted in the bin, the user can use the data to determine conditions such as cone up or cone down, whether there are high and low spots in the bin, and which filling or emptying points they want to target in multiple-fill, multiple-discharge point bins.

In addition to multiple point measurement, the advanced eBob software allows the user to add a strapping table to the bin parameters to further personalize the data for a particular bin. Strapping tables are helpful when the material in the bin tends to compact, which makes the bulk density of the material greater at the bottom of the bin than the top. In a non-linear vessel, the addition of a strapping table will improve the estimated volume of material in the tank.

The GRAPAS Award made this week in Bangkok, Thailand at the Victam Asia Exhibition acknowledged the contributions in innovation made by four companies submitting products for consideration; two were ‘highly commended’ and two ‘commended’.

Dutch equipment manufacturer, Van Aarsen received a ‘highly commented’ award for its ‘Automatic Screen Exchange for GD Hammer Mills.

“Automatic screen exchange on a hammer mill is a distinct advance on normal operating practice and which will improve overall feed milling plant operating efficiency and safety. Screen changing is typically a laborious procedure which this innovation will address. The animal feed industry can achieve improvements in its utilisation of plant by applying this device,” the judges stated in their summing up.

Alco coming ‘highly commented’ was the Batch Call Optimiser from Norvidan Overseas A/S of Denmark.

“Plant control systems which optimise the utilisation of the plant are of ever increasing significance. Norvidan are offering an impressive facility to ensure the optimum use of parallel lines of a process to ensure maximum output and thus best economic return,” the judges said.

Commended
The two companies receiving a commendation for their submissions were the Morillon company of France for its All-in-one Hydrascrew and the Queue-plus Software for Feed Plants by the Thai company Agentis Innovation. The hydraulic drive for the HydraScrew discharge screw is advantageous due to its good torque characteristics – “a commendable innovation with fairly wide opportunities for application as flat-bottomed storage grows in importance.,” said the judges.

“Queue-plus, as described, is an innovative software development which will provide material benefits for the feed miller and his customers of bagged products. A reduction in traffic congestion and turnaround time resulting from the improvements in scheduling is a major objective for a plant operator, concluded the judges.

FOSS wins the Asian GRAPAS Award for 2012

January 15, 2012 – Bangkok, Thailand: The winner of the 2012 GRAPAS Innovation Award has gone to the Foss company from Denmark at the Victam Asia exhibition held this week at the BITEC centre in Bangkok, Thailand.

The ProFoss Online Analysis has true in-line capability has very great potential, said the judging panel. It was the product that swept the pool of innovations coming from the grain milling industry and on display at the exhibition.

GRAPAS is the name given to an exhibition within an exhibition on flour, grain, rice and pasta milling. The judges said the application of effective on-line instrumentation linked to control systems can make a very large contribution to the profitability of a continuous process industry.

“Most cereal-related industries for both human food and animal feed milling are continuous processes.

“The ProFoss appears to offer a significant improvement on previous online instrumentation. Although it uses well-proven NIR technology it offers great practical and functional advantages by virtue of its ability to continuously measure parameters of cereal grains and ground products without interruption to the product flow. This true in-line capability has very great potential.”

The award was presented by Roger Gilbert Perendale Publishers Limited.

The runner up was Buhler AG of Switzerland with its Dolomit rollermill.

“The rollermill is the basic principles of the four and eight rollermill have been established for over a century. Nevertheless, the incremental improvements in design, materials and manufacture have resulted in enormous gains in efficiency,” added the judges.

“The Dolomit rollermill offered provides a ‘state of the art’ product which can be applied across a broad spectrum of the milling of cereals for both human food and, to a lesser extent, animal feed.

Overall the judges acknowledged the “interesting selection of products has been submitted for judging this year.

“Although each of the products offered for judging provide clear benefits and advantages to one or more milling processes, they are generally the result of evolutionary improvements and are not in themselves truly revolutionary.

“It is our recommendation therefore that in judging, weighting is also given to the breadth of fields in which they can be applied. The recommended winner and runner-up are both products that can be applied to a wide range of milling sectors and thus they will thereby contribute more to the industry as a whole.” The panel stated.

Direvo´s feed enzyme is an improved mannanase. It displays superior temperature stability and efficacy. Victam Asia 2012 get off to a promising start

Victam Asia, Fiaap Asia and Grapas Asia saw a promising start unaffected by bombing accidents as was seen elsewhere in Bangkok on Tuesday before the show started. More than 2,800 visitors entered the BITEC exhibition centre on the first day of Victam, Fiaap and Grapas Asia in Bangkok, Thailand.

More than a third of the visitors came from outside Thailand and from 66 countries in total, said Victam Managing Director Henk van de Bunt. USDA underestimates crop loss in South America

A Brazilian grain analyst believes that the US Department of Agriculture has underestimates the growing crop losses in both soybeans and corn that are taking place now as a result of the sever drought in Southern Brazil and Argentina. The USDA's recent report estimated Brazilian corn production at 61 million tons, which would be close to last year's actual production level.

"I don't see this corn being harvested. I completely disagree with this number," says João Carlos Kopp, a market analyst and consultant working with farmers in Brazil. Kopp's own estimates, working with several farmers around the country, come to 50.9 million tons, including expected losses of 30 percent in Rio Grande Du Sol and 30 percent loss in Paraná, the country's leading corn state. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz was pleased to join Prime Minister Stephen Harper on a successful trade mission to China which resulted in a series of new agricultural agreements between the two countries. "China is an important market for Canadian farmers and by working together with Chinese producers and processors we can open new windows of opportunity in both countries," said Minister Ritz. "Strengthening the Canada-China agricultural trade relationship with these agreements is the result of the strong trade relationship we have built with our Chinese partners over many years." Saskatchewan crop input facility closed by Cargill

Cargill Limited announced the closure of its Langbank, Saskatchewan crop input facility, effective February 15, 2012. The company will cease production at the ageing facility, which no longer serves to most effectively meet the needs of the company and its customers. “Cargill is committed to operating safe, efficient and cost-effective networks of farm service centers across Canada,” said Sheldon Spearman, Cargill Farm Service Group Manager.

“While the Langbank facility no longer meets our current needs, we will continue to offer our valued customers the exceptional direct-to-farm service approach that they have come to expect from Cargill. Our customers will not be impacted by this change,” he said. Read more ...

Nutreco has had a very good year in 2011

The global feed company Nutreco, has reported an EBITA at €241 million (US$317.048 million), for the end of 2011, this was an increase of 8.3 percent on the year ending 2010. Wout Dekker, CEO Nutreco: "The past year was important in the history of Nutreco for several reasons. It was the final year of our Re-balancing for Growth strategy and we achieved targets financially. We made advances in our nutritional solutions - creating value for our customers -, reached sustainability objectives and we made commitments for the future.

The excellent result in 2011, with a €241 million (US$317.048 million), EBITA, means Nutreco exceeded the target to double the 2006 EBITA of €115 million (US$151.288 million). In November the Executive Board presented the strategy update 'Ambition 2016 - driving sustainable growth'. EPA failed to update Dioxin regulations as deadline passes

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was all set to release new recommendations for the regulations of Dioxins on January 31, but so far they have not managed to meet the deadline date. The new reassessment and the updating of the regulations for dioxins come after many years of reassessing and advising US consumers and public policy makers since 1985.

Since the 1980's the use of dioxins have been scaled back, but even with the tighter regulations and control dioxin still contaminate meat and dairy products being principally emitted from waste incinerators, paper pulp producers, and copper smelters. Read more ...

Mexican cattle deaths caused through Urea poisoning

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (SAGARPA) in Mexico has confirmed that the 600 head of cattle in Actopan was caused by Urea poisoning thought to be from poultry manure. Poultry manure contains large amounts of urea, which is transformed into ammonia inside the stomach of the animal and generates amino acids or proteins, substances that cause excessive intoxication.

The delegate of SAGARPA, José Vicente Ramirez Martinez, said“After conducting a study of dead animals, it was discovered that cause of death was the consumption in excessive quantities of a feed comprising a cheap and shoddy chicken litter which poisoned the animals that died". “The results showed traces of urea, which involves a pattern of intoxication, however, independently of this we are awaiting the outcome [of the investigation] of the manure," explained the federal official. The first US-China agricultural symposium in Iowa

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), secretary Tom Vilsack has announced the first joint symposium on agriculture between the US and China. Government and industry leaders from both countries will gather in Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday February 16, for the US-China Agricultural Symposium. The symposium will focus on current and future cooperation between the two nations in areas including food safety, food security and sustainable agriculture.

"I'm honoured to welcome China's Vice President Xi Jinping and Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu to the United States, where we may continue our in-depth dialogue on issues of mutual concern," said Vilsack. Hungarian pellet mill operators trained by CPM Roskamp

CPM Roskamp suppliers of grinding, pelleting and cooling process technology for the animal feed, oilseed, biofuels and human food-processing industries, trained 15 operators from Hungary’s Pannonia Ethanol on the CPM Roskamp Champion hammermill. The plant will convert roughly 575,000 tons of corn annually.

“CPM was happy to welcome the Pannonia operators from Hungary to receive training on our machines,” said Ryan Dietzenbach, CPM Roskamp Champion assistant sales manager. “We have several goals with our new ethanol plant,” said Ferenc Mak, Pannonia Ethanol plant manager. “We want to provide a source of domestically produced animal feed; produce some of the cleanest ethanol within the European Union (EU); and help Hungary take an active, leading role in ongoing EU efforts to decrease carbon emissions.” Read more ...

Work starts on algae-based feed plant in Iowa

Shenandoah's BioProcess Algae and Green Plains Renewable Energy broke ground last week on the construction of its five-acre (1.2 ha) production plant at Green Plains in Shenandoah, Iowa, USA.
The project's Grower Harvester bioreactors, or ponds, have been effectively running outdoors since late August 2011. This groundbreaking marks the third phase in the project to commercialise algae for feed and high-value nutraceutical markets.

Phase one of algae production was launched in October 2009.

"The incredible success of this project, from its conception in 2008 to this groundbreaking today, is a result of a combination of great partnerships, great science, great engineering and great leadership," said Shenandoah Chamber and Industry Executive Director Gregg Connell. "Moving forward into the five-acre production facility, we have successfully brought algae directly into the sunlight to increase growth rates," said Tim Burns, CEO of BioProcess Algae. Read more ..

Livestock firm in Vietnam opens large feed factory

The Hong Ha Nutrition Joint Stock Co, a private Vietnamese firm, has opened an advanced animal feed plant with a capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year, and thereby becoming the largest feed processor in Vietnam. The factory is located on a total area of 7 ha, at the Dong Van Industrial Zone, Duy Tien District, in the northern Hanam Province.

Last year, the enterprise decided to invest more than VND150 billion (US$7.1 million) in the new production line to reach its current capacity, nearly ten times more than the initial capacity of 48,000 tonnes seven years ago. The event marked a significant milestone as a local private firm reaching such a great capacity, said industrial analysts. Read more ...

Biotechnology developer receives patent for xylose

A California based biotechnology developer Verdezyne has been granted a US patent titled “Engineered microorganisms with enhanced fermentation activity” for an engineered yeast and class of enzymes it developed which can be used to ferment the abundant, but hard-to-process, xylose found in cellulosic feedstocks.

According to Steven Picataggio, chief scientific officer at Verdezyne, xylose is the most abundant pentose sugar and can comprise up to 40 percent of cellulosic feedstocks being considered for biofuels and biochemical production. “Unfortunately, yeast is naturally unable to ferment this xylose, and robust xylose fermentation remains a key bottleneck for commercialising the next-generation cellulosic ethanol process,” he said. The poster, presented by BRI Nutritionist Dr Patrick Biggs, was entitled “Effect of a protease on phytase when fed to broiler chickens.”

New generation of products that helps the broiler industry reduce feed costs

Danisco's Axtra XAP is a new generation feed enzyme product, that allows the inclusions of lower cost feed ingredients such as Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS). While DDGS is potentially a cost-effective and valuable feed ingredient for the broiler industry, its use is often limited by the high content of fibrous anti-nutrients such as arabinoxylans, and the low and variable digestibility of amino acids and other nutrients.

The unique enzyme combination targets the indigestible fibrous components, Axtra XAP releases starch and amino acids, thereby enabling higher inclusion levels of these lower cost ingredients. Grain railway cars banned from leaving country

Ukraine's State Railway Administration has banned its grain railway cars from leaving the country, a spokeswoman for the body said on Friday, effectively halting railway grain exports. "It is a temporary restriction which was introduced in a bid to secure domestic shipments," she said.

She added that the ban had come into force on February 1 and would remain until a special decision by the railway authority. The spokeswoman said Ukraine operated about 11,000 grain cars and around 1,000 of them were outside of Ukrainian territory as of February 3. "Our service is relatively cheap and traders prefer to keep our cars for as long as possible," she said. Read more ...

US organic farmers sue Monsanto on GM seeds

A class action law suit has been filed by the US Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association against Monsanto, which manufactures most of the world’s genetically modified seeds and pollens. In a written statement, Monsanto spokesman Thomas Helscher said "Monsanto never has and never will sue a farmer if our patented seed or traits are found in his field as a result of inadvertent means.”

But Gianni Ortiz, founder and director of Farm Assist Productions, a nonprofit advocacy group for small farms, says she is aware of nearly 900 court cases in which Monsanto won damages from farmers because their crops contained plants grown from its genetically modified organisms. Read more ...

Welsh developing a natural feed supplement

An additive aimed at producing healthy premium milk all year round is currently under development in Wales with the support of the Welsh government. Scientists at the Aberystwyth-based Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), believe this could provide a financial boost for dairy farmers and feed manufactures.

“The technology we have developed is novel, meets an industry need and promises economic benefits to feed manufacturers, dairy farmers and retailers,” says Dr Michael Lee, who is leading the project. Welsh Government funding of more than UK£126, 000 (€ 150,000) will enable IBERS to validate the technology by way of field trials and it is working with three industrial partners, including one of the UK’s leading UK supermarkets and an animal feed manufacturer. APK a Ukrainian pork producer invest in feed production

A Ukrainian pork producing company APK-Invest Company (Donetsk region), one of the largest in the Ukraine , plans to invest €28.4 million (US$37.3 million), in compound feed production by 2015. According to the company’s report of January 26, it expects to reach an annual output level of 200,000 tons of compound feed by 2015.

This would be twice the production of 2011, APK has been boosting compound feed product by 50 percent year on year in 2011 to 90,000 tons. The company points out that this expansion was achieved due to expanding production capacities of its existing feed mills. Read more ..

Russian wheat pounded by Arctic blast

The wheat-growing areas of Ukraine and central Russia are suffering as Arctic blast batter the region. There's not quite enough snow cover to insulate the region's winter wheat and barley and the crops are starting to suffer from winterkill, says MDA EarthSat Weather senior ag meteorologist Don Keeney.

"Snow cover is sufficient in many areas to insulate and protect the crops from damage," he says. "However, snow cover is a bit thin in far southeastern Ukraine and southern Russia, and we estimate about 15 percent of the winter wheat and 20 percent of the winter barley will suffer from winterkill damage." The board of the Open Innovation Center Feed Design Lab in its meeting of January 30, has appointed Ir. Yvan Dejaegher (Belgium) as the new independent chairman of the Foundation Board. When setting up the Feed Design Lab in The Netherlands an international organisation has always been the starting point. It is an important principle the appointment of an independent chairman of the board with knowledge of the total protein and feed column, FDL writes in a press release.

Yvan Dejaegher, is Director General of Bemefa, Vice President of Ovocom, member of the Core Group EUFETEC and is agricultural engineer by training and specialised in marketing. Dejaegher started his career at Bemefa in 1988. Bemefa is the professional association of approximately 170 Belgian manufacturers, they represent 99 percent of the Belgian national feed production. Spanish feed production dominated by pig feed

During 2010 the Spanish feed production reached a total 29.7 million tons, an increase of 0.11 percent over 2009. According to the final report by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment pig feed production share of the production was 46 percent and is the main feed manufactured on the Iberian Peninsula.

Total feed production in 2010 in Spain reached 29,736,319 tons, more or less stable compared to 2009 with a slight increase of 34,000 tons or 0.11 percent. However, if we simply compare the production of feed for animal production, production reached 28,9 million tons, which is 107,000 tons less than the production of feed for farmed animals in 2009, i.e a slight decrease of 0.37 percent, approximately. APK-Inform Agency announces about holding of the international conference "Ukrainian soybean market - 2012", which will focus on the market of soybean, and takes place in Yalta on May 16-18, 2012. It should be noted that for the first time in Ukraine there will be held the major event devoted to the most dynamically growing segment of the domestic oilseed market. Only during several years the Ukrainian market of soybean made rather powerful leap: during recent 4 seasons soybean sowing areas increased two times (from the level of 558.5 thousand ha in 2008/09 MY to 1.13 million ha in 2011/12 MY), and soybean production volumes increased in almost three times (in the current season the volumes exceeded the milestone of two million tons!).

At the same time, processing capacities of the country are not keeping up with the boom of production to date production of soybean in Ukraine far exceeds the volume of the oilseed processing. According to estimations of APK-Inform Agency, in the current year the Ukrainian enterprises will process nearly 300,000 tons of soybean. What is the main reason for this situation? In order to answer this and other important questions it is required to estimate the current market situation, make an analysis of the prospects for development of the market of soybean and by-products, and identify new ways to develop the market of soybean industry.

The business climate of the event will allow discussing current trends on the markets of soybean and by-products of Ukraine, Russia and other CIS countries, and various medium-term forecasts for the market of soybeans. When antibiotics were first used in feed they worked and everyone had confidence in them. Many years later antibiotics are being blamed for all sorts of things and the discovery of ever increasing numbers of antibiotic, and multiple antibiotic strains of bacterial pathogens required Governmental intervention.

In 2006 the EU introduced a ban on antibiotics for use as growth promoters in an attempt to prevent the occurrence of human problems such as MRSA and antibiotic resistant Clostridium difficile but this change was not properly introduced and many antibiotics switched from prophylactic to therapeutic dose rates in an attempt to prevent disease. 2,400 pigs to be culled in Germany

About 2,400 pigs in Germany are o be culled after it was discovered they had been fed with contaminated feed. The feed contained chloramphenicol a banned antibiotic. The contamination in pigs was discovered last week when chloramphenicol residues were found in pig urine. Twenty-six pig farms were temporarily closed as a result.

Analysis showed that some of the farms tested negative, in others the chloramphenicol was present in the feed but not in the pigs. The meat of about 2,400 pigs was found to be contaminated and hence this cannot be brought to market. These animals will have to be culled. One of the other farms, with about 1,300 finisher pigs, is still under further investigation. Read more ...

Low oil DDGS becoming more available

Ethanol plants in the United States that also produce distiller's dried grain (DDGS) are continuing to upgrade their equipment to extract non-food grade corn oil during the ethanol production process. “On a production basis, about 40 percent of US DDGS produced today is low-oil, and 58 percent will be low-oil by this summer,” said Randy Ives of Gavilon, and US Grains Council Value-Added Advisory Team Leader. The Council noted research is underway to help quantify the characteristics of low-oil DDGS. Results will become available later in 2012. Read more ...

Broken lock adds millions to costs of feed miller

Feed manufacturer ForFarmers is encountering damages of up to €50,000 (US$65,647.468) per day due to a broken door in a lock between the IJssel River and the Twente Canal which is the main route for their supply of raw materials. Early January one of the doors in the lock broke from its hinges and since then all ship traffic is on hold.

“Luckily at this time year thing are a bit slow in truck hauling, so the transport vehicles were readily available, but it makes quite a difference if you have to unload a truck of 30 tonnes or a ship of 3,000 tonnes,” he adds. Using vegetable by-products for animal feed

American Meat Institute to co-locate with IPE/IFE in 2013

US Poultry & Egg Association (USPoultry) and the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) have signed an agreement with the American Meat Institute (AMI) to co-locate the AMI tradeshow with the IPE/IFE in Atlanta, annually in January, starting in 2013.

The three shows will operate under one umbrella creating one of the largest 50 shows in the United States. It is expected that the entire show will include more than 1,000 exhibitors and close to 1,000,000 square feet (almost 93,000 m2) of exhibit space. Thai CP Foods sees improved sales after acquisition

Charoen Pokphand Foods, Thailand's largest agribusiness company, expects sales in 2012 to exceed 300 billion baht (US$9.55 billion) (€7.269 billion), boosted by its purchase of a Hong Kong affiliate, its president said. CP Foods agreed to buy 74.2 percent of Hong Kong-listed CP Pokphand Co Ltd (CPP) for US$2.1 billion (€1.598 billion), in November last year.

The acquisition of the majority stake will help CP Foods expand in China and Vietnam. In particular, it will get access to 28 provinces in China. The deal will also allow for better synergy between its animal feeds and farming businesses. "We are seeing stronger sales growth this year, driven by the acquisition of CP Pokphand," President Adirek Sripratak told reporters, adding the company had completed the purchase on January 18. The Hillman family was on hand to accept the award during a ceremony last night presented by The Business Journal. JD Heiskell & Co celebrated its 125th anniversary last year. President and fourth generation family member Scot Hillman said the award just might be the company's highlight of the year.

China bans oil meal from India

China has banned imports of oil meal from India saying it has found traces of a hazardous chemical in some rapeseed meal shipments, the Solvent Extractors Association of India said. Chinese authorities have now excluded India from the list of importing countries, and this will likely hurt India's oil meal exports badly, the trade body said in a statement.

China is the fourth-largest oil meal importer from India and it buys large quantities of rapeseed meal and soy meal from the South Asian country. Japan, Vietnam and South Korea are the other major oil meal importers from India. Read more ...

New feed mill opens in the Shandong Province, China

Recently a new feed mill was opened in Rushan, Weihei Shandong Province in China. The mill owned by the OSI Group Poultry Development Co, celebrated the grand opening of a new modern mill, with an annual capacity of 600,000 metric tons, the new facility is one of the largest feed mills in operation in China.

The celebration marked an end to the project that started fourteen months earlier. "This is an end, but also a new beginning for OSI and the people of Rushan," said Bill Weimer, EVP and CFO of the OSI Group based in Chicago, IL, USA. Poultry owners in Bhutan want chicken feed mill

With the increasing cost of feed, poultry owners in Bhutan are trying to get help from the government to establish a chicken feed mill in the Dzongkhag district. The poultry farmers said "that feed suppliers increase the cost of feed" at the whim of the feed suppliers, this is due to the monopoly they have.

“It is becoming costlier for us to buy chicken feed with prices increasing every few months,” a poultry farm owner said. He said that "with only around 60 percent birds laying eggs, buying feed from the city of Phuentsholing has become expensive". Read more ...

Low nutritious feed volume increased by Russian poultry industry

According to the analytical agency Soya news the consumption of low nutritious poultry feed has increased over 2011. At the end of 2011 about 35 percent of poultry industries compounds feed was low nutritious feed, where as in 2010 it only accounted for 23 percent of the total compound feed consumed.

Many experts claim the trend towards low nutritious feed, is the increasing cost of raw materials for laying hens and broiler feed. The usage of such feed will let the producer to decrease the cost of production process by 15-20 percent. Read more ...

World feed production reaches 873 million tons

A global survey commissioned by Alltech and conducted through Alltech's regional managers, the survey assessed the tonnage of 132 countries and all species. “This new global estimate is quite significant, especially when compared to the 2010 Watt report, which indicated 717.6 million tons,” said Aidan Connolly, vice president of corporate accounts at Alltech.

“Feed production is an increasingly global phenomenon and this survey is the broadest in its reach and, therefore, also complete in terms of its review of the state of play in the world feed industry.” Read more ...

USDA says that cattle on feed up from last year

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) January Cattle on Feed Report, which indicates that the number of cattle on feed had increased from last year by three percent. Traders were expecting a slightly larger number. University of Missouri-Columbia Agricultural Economist Ron Plain says that the big difference was in marketings.

"USDA said marketings were down only 1.9 percent during December," Plain said. "The trade was expecting a three percent drop in marketing, so those extra marketing pulled down the total number of cattle on feed relative to what traders were expecting." Read more ...

New Hope and Marubeni join for overseas expansion

China's biggest manufacture of animal feed the New Hope Group has signed an agreement with Japans biggest grain trader Marubeni Corp to expand their business in emerging markets and to tap into the region's rising demand for agricultural products. Ban on GM maize continues in France

The French Government, backed by President Sarkozy, first banned MON810 in 2008 as a "serious risk to the environment". The crop is genetically modified to produce toxins that kill insects. The French government is to continue its ban on cultivating GM maize from Monsanto, type MON810 GM.

"In addition to health and environmental concerns, other basic problems remain unresolved, such as how to prevent the contamination of crops and honey through pollen movement or human error, maintaining GM-free agricultural seeds and, critically, who is liable when things go wrong.” Read more ...

Danisco loses bid to delay UK trails.

Danisco has lost a bid to delay a trail in the United Kingdom in its patient battle with Novozymes over a type of enzyme which aids digestion of animal feed. Danisco, based in Denmark and a unit of DuPont Co, sought to pause the case until the European Patent Office ruled on the dispute.The UK Court of Appeal rejected Danisco’s second application to push back the trial, and for permission to use documents from the UK case in the European proceedings. Seedburo Equipment Company celebrates 100 years of service to the agribusiness industries…

Seedburo was founded in Chicago, IL in 1912 as the Seed Trade Reporting Bureau, a publishing company started by Leroy M. Smith. They produced several publications for the seed trade and provided the industry with information and crop reporting. Among these publications were the Seed
Trade Buyers Guide and Seed World magazine, launched in 1915.

In 1916 the Grain Standards Act was passed and Mr. Smith sold his interests in the publications to continue his flourishing business in equipment sales. Because of his focus on equipment sales, he became less involved with the publications. The Seed Trade Reporting Bureau was then reorganized, they shortened their original trade name and Bureau became “buro” to form the SEEDBURO EQUIPMENT COMPANY. The focus of Seedburo was to be the ‘go to’ source of equipment for the grain inspection offices, grain elevators, seed research and development companies, and the various food and feed manufacturing industries. Seedburo quickly became the largest distributor of testing and handling equipment in the United States.

After achieving success in the US, Seedburo began exporting equipment world-wide through an extensive network of international sales personnel. In 1983, Seedburo was presented with the prestigious “Presidents E Award” for their excellence in exporting and continues to distribute to over 130 countries worldwide. The company continued to flourish and forge a successful path as the industry leader in equipment sales, making distributor arrangements with many companies who continue to supply Seedburo with quality products even today.

Through several acquisitions, including their main competitor Burrows Equipment Company, Seedburo was strengthening their position as the premiere supplier to the grain, feed and seed industries. The legacy of Seedburo has continued for several decades with an experienced sales force which now includes: Owner/President Tom Runyon, Vice President of Sales Kathy Reading, Marketing & Sales Manager Tim Snader, Sales Associate Iris Sanchez and Sales Associate Veronica Quintana.

A new history has begun for Seedburo including the 2008 move from the friendly ‘Windy City’ of Chicago to the more humble surroundings of Des Plaines, Illinois, which places them nearer to freight forwarders and O’Hare airport. A long future is in store for Seedburo as they continue the success of the company and the reputation they have chiseled out for 100 years!

Feed use in Indonesia predicted to increase in 2012

Indonesian feed use is set to grow in 2012, economic growth reached 6.7 percent and feed use reached 11.2 million tons, almost one million more than 2010. With a production capacity that can still be improved, good economic growth, high-technology uptake and the level of local consumption of poultry products continuing to increase, feed consumption in 2012 is projected to reach 12.3 million tonnes, according to Indonesian Feed Mill Association. EFSA gives scientific opinion on the use of feed additives

The European Feed Safety Authority recently gave its scientific opinion on the use of rosemary extract, live yeast, potassium diformate, and a phytase for use in production animals’ feeds. The additive rosemary extract liquid of natural origin is intended to be used as a technological additive (antioxidant) in feed for dogs and cats.

The FEEDAP Panel assessed the data provided by the applicant in the technical dossier, but needed additional information to be able to deliver an opinion on the safety and efficacy. Because the applicant failed to provide this additional information, the FEEDAP Panel was not in a position to deliver an opinion on the safety and efficacy of liquid rosemary extract as a technological additive for dogs and cats. South Africa turns to wheat as corn prices increase

Livestock feed producers in South Africa are moving away from corn and using wheat as an alternative for the first time in decades, due to the surge in corn prices. Wheat is being used for animal feed in Western Cape Province, which produces about 40 percent of South Africa’s wheat, said an official at Meadow Feeds, who declined to be identified in line with company policy.

“This is happening for the first time in roughly 10 years,” he said. Historically, wheat used to be approximately 900 rand (US$112) (€86.923), more expensive per ton than yellow corn, but the difference has narrowed, Brink van Wyk, a trader at Bosveld Graan, said in an interview in Johannesburg. Argentina sees increased corm acreage

A report from Kurt Shultz, US Grains Council director in Latin America, has said that Argentina's farmers will make a better profit from corn than from soybeans for the first time ever this year. “The estimate is that farmers’ net profit will be US$150 (€116.955) per metric ton more with corn,” Shultz said.

“With this kind of incentive, some analysts predict corn acreage could increase from four million hectares to seven million hectares within the next three to five years.” The situation, he noted, is fluid and depends in part on Argentine government decisions. Based on these figures, the natural assumption is that the government will expand export quotas from 15 to 19 million tons to get rid of surplus production. Read more ...

Feed firms in Vietnam face pressure

Domestic Vietnamese feed companies face bigger challenges as many foreign-invested companies plan to widen their investments in Vietnam, according to the Vietnam Feed Association (VFA). Chairman of the VFA Le Ba Lich said "that when the widening plan was implemented, market shares of domestic companies would surely be narrowed". "Domestic companies risk suffering from the increased burdens of capital shortage and high interest rates. Additionally, many small companies may face bankruptcy," Lich said. Read more ...

OIE calls for action against widespread antibiotic abuse

The world body charged with fighting animal disease, The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has called for action against the widespread abuse of antibiotics in livestock farming, that has lead to drug resistant strains of bacteria. They also warned that a world wide ban on antibiotic use would leave the world short of protein.

"The use of antibiotics is today essential to ensure sufficient animal production to feed the planet. Without antibiotics there would be supply problems of animal protein for the human population," Bernard Vallat, director of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) told a news conference.
