OIE calls for action against widespread antibiotic abuse

The world body charged with fighting animal disease, The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has called for action against the widespread abuse of antibiotics in livestock farming, that has lead to drug resistant strains of bacteria. They also warned that a world wide ban on antibiotic use would leave the world short of protein.

"The use of antibiotics is today essential to ensure sufficient animal production to feed the planet. Without antibiotics there would be supply problems of animal protein for the human population," Bernard Vallat, director of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) told a news conference.
