Changes to wheat marketing in western Canada has caused concern with Latin
American millers who import the crop.
According to a report in Portage Online by Kelvin Heppner, millers are worried they may no longer be able to
consistently expect high quality wheat from Canada.
Senior milling industry executives from five South and Central American countries were in Manitoba last week participating in the Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI) Latin America-Canada Milling Program. They warned that the restriction changes may encourage farmers to grow lower quality grain.
In April, the Canadian Wheat Board stopped funding the CIGI program which regulated imports of Canadian wheat to Columbia. The organisation is now funded by farmers, industry partners and the federal government.
