20/11/12: News on GMO soy, the USDA and Hovis job cuts

  • Russia has approved the use of the GMO soybean line BPS-CV127-9 in animal feeds. The strain is resistant to the imidazolinone class of herbicides. It  must only be imported into the country as beans and processed to make them unable to reproduce. Read more...
  • We may think this summer's drought has been bad but it's nothing compared to the USA in the 1930s. Destructive farming techniques and persistent drought caused 100 million acres of Great Plains topsoil to blow away causing what is commonly known as the Dust Bowl.   • The owner of British baker, Hovis is to cut nearly 1000 jobs and close two bakeries. The bulk of the jobs will go in Birmingham when Hovis owner, Premier Foods will close its midland factory and distribution centre with a loss of 511 jobs. Premier Foods has seen its Hovis division hit by intense competition in the bread market and a surge in wheat price inflation caused by poor weather. Read more...
