10/01/13:World food wastage; Indian wheat gets a boost; UK grain imports

  • The Institute of Mechanical Engineers has released a report which claims that up to 50 percent of food is wasted. World production of food stands at around four billion metric tonnes of food per annum, so the wastage amounts to two billion tonnes. The report pinpoints poor practices in harvesting, storage and transportation, as well as market and consumer wastage, as the causes behind the losses. Download the full report.

  • UK imports of grain have risen as millers accept better quality grain. According to Emma Croft of Anderson Grain Marketing, milling wheats have accounted for a significant proportion of the imports, with more than a quarter (224,000/T) originating from Germany (a key source of high protein milling wheat) – that’s five times the amount the UK had imported at this point in the season last year.
