The Idaho Barley Commission is considering creating a $1 million
research endowment with the University of Idaho. The money would be used to fund a scientist who would specialise in barley
agronomics and soil fertility.
The move that could
result in the state checkoff fee for Idaho's 1,500 barley producers
increasing one cent per hundredweight. The current assessment is two cents per hundredweight, which is less than one cent per bushel.
Several states in the US are considering plans on GM labeling. Washington is has delivered a ballot of about 350,000 voter signatures to the Washington Secretary of State asking for mantatory labeling of GM foods.
Initiative 522 – the so-called People's Right to Know Genetically
Engineered Food Act - would require food and seeds with GM content be
labeled beginning July 2015. Assuming the signatures are certified by
the Secretary of State, the state legislature would have three options:
adopt the measure into law, refuse to act on it but place it on the
November 2013 ballot, or approve an alternate measure and place both it
and the original on the ballot.
