19/03/2013: Flood affected farmers get free bags of grain; Man dies in accident at East Coast Viners Grain

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration has flagged-off the distribution of free bags of  assorted grains to 642 farmers in 19 flood affected communities in Abaji.
In response to the distribution, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, Minister of State for the FCT, noted that flood is an unpredictable risk in agriculture.
“The Federal Government deemed it necessary to package a programme such as this to encourage people who were affected by the flood to keep them on their farming activities thereby boosting agricultural production and ensuring national food security”.
The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has allocated 8400 bags of maize and 6600 bags of guinea corn for distribution.
Dr. Charles Momoh, Director of Federal Ministry of Agriculture added  that two area councils were also affected last year when the river Gurara in Abaji and river Bobo in Kwali over flowed their banks.
To cushion the effect of the disaster on farmers, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture has donated 44 trucks of grains to the FCT administration which are being distributed to victims.

An investigation has been launched following the death of a man at a grain grinding mill.
The 49-year-old worker, who is yet to be named, was killed yesterday at East Coast Viners Grain in Drumlithie, near Stonehaven.
A spokesman for Grampian Police said they were called to the business along with other emergency services after the accident but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Graham Forbes, one of the managing partners of East Coast Viners, said he was distraught over the man's death, "I'm absolutely appalled, I don't know what quite has happened, but it's hellish somebody should be killed."
This is not the first incident to happen at East Coast Viners Grain. The company, which produces animal feeds for cattle, poultry and sheep across Scotland, was fined £4000 in 2011 when worker Douglas Mortimer climbed on to an excavator bucket and fell about five-and-a-half feet on to a concrete floor. He was knocked unconscious in the incident and had to spend a night in hospital.
A Grampian Police spokeswoman said, "Grampian Police can confirm they were in attendance at a work related death at a mill in Drumlithie, near Stonehaven."
"The incident was reported to police at 10.12am on Monday, March 18. Unfortunately, a man aged in his 40s suffered fatal injuries."
