23/07/2013: Iran turns to Caspian Sea for grain stocks; Monsanto withdraws GM applications; horse slaughter plants could serve feed market

Iran is approaching Kazakhstan and other Caspian Sea suppliers for fresh wheat deals after buying over 1 million tonnes in recent weeks. It is believed Iran will need 5 million tonnes of imports this summer.

"There is a new government in place and they have given the green light to buy wheat. It is also  Ramadan, so they need to keeping boosting stocks," a Middle East based trade source told Reuters.

Monsanto has said it will no longer seek approval for the cultivation of new GM crops in Europe due to a negative stance towards biotechnology.

The company has said it is withdrawing pending applications for commercial cultivation of new biotech crops, arguing that Europe is effectively a conventional seed market.

The attorney representing newly licensed horse slaughterhouses in New Mexico and Iowa have announced new plans that could see the opening of plants in August.

But lawyer Blair Dunn says those plans rely on a  court date before a federal judge in New Mexico overseeing a lawsuit by animal protection groups.

Horse meat is used as food or animal feed in some foreign countries and could be exported to those markets.
