16/05/14: HGCA helps growers keep on top of weeds

HGCA has updated two publications so that growers have the most up-to-date information to deal with weeds on their farms.

Weed management remains a challenge, as growers need to balance getting a productive crop with resistance management and minimising environmental impacts.

The first publication is the popular ‘Managing weeds in arable rotations’, a general guide outlining how to integrate cultural and chemical methods to get control of a wide range of common arable weeds. It is a useful reference point for anyone dealing with weeds on their farm as it goes through all of the main factors growers need to consider when putting together a weed control strategy. 

The other publication focuses specifically on brome grasses, which can reduce both yield and quality. It includes information on weed identification, cultural control and detailed tables on chemical control options, including application windows and products.

“Although the window has now passed for most chemical control, staying on top of weeds is a year- round operation, now is a good time to think about rotational control options and even consider spraying or mowing problem patches to limit seed return,” says Dr Paul Gosling of HGCA.
