17/07/2014: Calls for better grain storage in Punjab

If you have enough food grains, there is the problem of storing it.

It is the same concern every year as tonnes of grains continue to be stored out in the open, rotting away in the Punjab.

With the onset of monsoon, there's a fear that tonnes of grains will literally be going down the drain. An open air wheat storage facility in Patiala has grain out in the open. Many bags have burst open and wheat has been spilling out. With monsoon beginning, there is no way that the grain can be protected and will start rotting.

It's the same story at many storage locations across Punjab. Farmers find it hard to see their hard labour rot away. But bottlenecks in grain movement and inadequate storage remain a big concern.
