04/08/2014: Former Australian MP trapped in grain for over eight hours survives

A 70-year-old former member of parliament for the Australian government was successfully rescued after being trapped in grain up his armpits in an underground silo storage on his farm The Gums, off the Leichard Highway about 200km west of Toowoomba at 14:00 on Sunday.

It took several hours to free Ian Cameron who was taken to hospital with crushed toes at 21:30 in the evening.

Securing a rope under his arms was not effective in pulling him from the grain and it was only when grain vacuuming equipment from Chinchilla arrived and removed several tonnes of grain that allowed for him to be rescued.

The Global Miller feels strongly that emergency services in agricultural areas and where grain is stored should have purpose-built rescue boards that make rescuing trapped workers easier and quicker to save lives and reduce crush injuries.
