06/08/2014: Progress of the 2014 U.S.A, wheat crop.

The crop prospects for US Hard Red Spring wheat (HRS) and Durum wheat are excellent.

The report indicates high yields and little disease pressure. Harvest will be in full swing in a few weeks the only uncertainty will be the weather.

The next 10 days weather will be mixed but with a more dry and sunny tendency. The below report of the North Dakota Wheat commission confirms this introduction.

Crop Progress Report July 29, 2014 The US hard red spring wheat crop is now 93 percent headed, equal to the five year average and 2013. Progress remains furthest along in South Dakota with 100 percent headed followed by Montana at 93 percent, Minnesota at 92 percent and North Dakota at 91 percent.

The front maturity of the crop is a bit behind normal however with 29 percent of the North Dakota crop turning color compared to a normal pace of 36 percent Last week brought needed precipitation to a good portion of the region, although in many areas it was accompanied by high winds and hail which did cause some damage to the crop.

As in most years, parts of the region do need additional precipitation, but for the most part the growing conditions remain near ideal in most of the growing region. The forecast this week is for average to below average temperatures and generally dry conditions. This should be beneficial to limit disease pressures, prevent crop damage from storms and maintain yield and quality potential in the crop.

The latest crop condition ratings remain similar to last week and slightly ahead of the 2013 crop at this point in time. For the region, 70 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent, compared to 68 percent one year ago. By state, the highest ratings are in North Dakota with 82 percent rated good to excellent, followed by SD at 80 percent, Montana at 59 percent and Minnesota at 53 percent.

The annual spring wheat crop tour confirmed the excellent yield potential on the 2014 crop with average yields higher than a year ago and limited disease pressures on the majority of the crop. Average starting date for harvest was pegged at about 3 weeks, but due to wet planting conditions in areas, some areas will not be ready to harvest until mid-September.

About 10 percent of the North Dakota crop is turning color. In Montana, 83 percent of the crop has headed, slightly ahead of the five year average and 2013. Ten percent of the crop is turning color, slightly behind the five year average of 18 percent. Crop condition ratings peg the North Dakota crop at 83 percent good to excellent and 62 percent good to excellent in Montana.
