A review of scientific papers on the topic concluded that the ingredient would have a positive effect on the health of the vast majority of people.

Growing numbers of shoppers have taken to buying 'free from' foods without wheat or any gluten, with many believing the move will help their digestive system. Experts have also put the trend down to the influence of celebrities such as Victoria Beckham and Gwyneth Paltrow who are said to have gone 'gluten-free'.

However, the review by the University of Warwick’s researchers, carried out on behalf of Weetabix, a wildely-respected breakfast cereal manufacturer, suggested that 98 percent of the population would benefit from maintaining a diet based on whole-grain foods such as wheat.

“Apart from the two percent of the population who suffer from coeliac disease or other sensitivities or intolerance to wheat, there is overwhelming evidence of clear health benefits of a whole grain based diets featuring store cupboard staples such as bread and cereal made from lightly processed wheat,” said Rob Lillywhite, senior research fellow at the crop centre at Warwick’s School of Life Sciences.
