The United States Government says it will act should Russia conclude any trade deal with Iran that contravenes international sanctions, The Moscow Times reports.
“We are aware of the talks between Russia and Iran involving various areas of planned future economic cooperation”, State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Monday.
The previous day Alexei Ulyukayev, Russia’s Economy Minister spoke of his hopes that his country would soon be providing Iran with grain and equipment in exchange for oil. According to a transcript on the US State Department website, Psaki says the US would act if such a deal were sanctionable.
It is no surprise that Moscow-Tehran relations have become closer over the past year, with both becoming ever more isolated from the West. For Moscow, the bone of contention is Ukraine, whereas Iran has been under United Nations sanctions since 2006 over its uranium enrichment program.
President Putin of Russia has had three meetings with the Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani over the past year, with Russia agreeing last month to construct a further two nuclear reactors in Iran.
Moscow is also involved in negotiations with the US, China, France, Britain and Germany to ease sanctions against Tehran in exchange for assurances regarding its nuclear program. A deadline to conclude talks had been set for November; that deadline has now been missed and a new one set for the first of July 2015.
