The grain harvest in Western Australia is slowly finishing
this month, with the state on track for a higher than expected yield, ABC News reports.
WA's main grain handler, Cooperative Bulk Handling, has
received 13.3 million tonnes so far, and is expecting 13.5 million tonnes.
General manager of CBH operations David Capper says despite
wet weather at harvest time, the grain quality has remained strong.
"So it's been a really good solid crop overall,
unfortunately it's been a crop of two halves with the Geraldton Zone and big
components of the Kwinana Zone not doing as well as they would have liked, but
the Esperance Zone and the Albany Zone having really good years again," he
said.
In December the national commodity forecaster ABARES
dramatically revised down harvest forecasts, with New South Wales and Victoria
harvesting their smallest crop in some years.
The harvest was tipped to be 37 million tonnes, 16 per cent
down nationally on last year's harvest, but still four per cent above the ten
year average.
