27/01/2015: South Australia reaps benefit from 'outstanding' AUS$1.8b grain harvest

Despite a challenging grain growing season in South Australia, many farmers have been happy with the harvest, ABC News reports.

Frost, badly timed rain and a dry finish had many expecting below average yields, but overall it has been a good year according to the Department of Primary Industries.

Grains industry account manager Dave Lewis said while some parts were yet to finish harvest, it was clear tonnages were above expectations.

"To come up with a 7.6 million tonne crop, which is the sixth successive year above the long term average of 6.6 million tonnes, is an outstanding result," he said.

"The dollar value at the farm gate is around about AUS$1.8 billion which is an enormous number for the South Australian industry.

"There's an export value, because 85 percent of our crop is exported each year, of around AUS$2.2 billion."

Mayura Station cropping manager Rob Jacobs said he was still harvesting at Millicent, in the state's south east, mostly due to rain delays.

"It's certainly slowed down the reaping of the wheat crop," he said.

"We've been able to get on and reap broad beans but wheat has been a real challenge.

"We've got about 180 hectares to reap and it won't take many days if we can get to it."
