China’s big grain reserves come with equally big problems

Despite reporting increases in grain production for 11 consecutive years, China continues to stockpile enormous grain reserves.

Some experts feel however, that China’s methods are unsustainable, and that the country is paying too high a price for this unyielding push for grain reserves through exhausted land, market distortion, and higher prices.

Think tanks and advisory groups in the country are urging for the rapid adoption of policy changes to increase sustainability.

Argentine farmers say Monsanto soy contracts break local law

Under contracts they signed, even if Argentine farmers use saved seeds from a prior Intacta soybean harvest, they are bound to pay royalties on the resulting crop. The contracts allow Monsanto to inspect their shipments for the presence of Intacta biotech.

Now farmers are countering that the inspections are in defiance of the country’s legal system, and that only the state has the ability to inspect shipments.

Insects equal soy nutrition in animal feed 
A research team at the UK-based Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) and AB Agri have found that insects perform on par with soy as a source of protein in chicken, fish, and pig feed according to nutritional tests.

NexSteppe takes biomass sorghum to commercial scale in Brazil

California-based NexSteppe announces it has sold the production of its Palo Alto biomass sorghum from 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) this past season, compared to the sale of production from 1,000 hectares (2500 acres) the season before.
