The Mills Archive Trust has just received
£68,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, 'From
Quern to Computer'. Helped by volunteers from the local community as well as
further afield, the project focuses on telling the fascinating story of flour
milling, from its ancient origins in 6000 BC up to the present day and large
computer-driven roller mills.
The Mills Archive is a registered charity, whose mission is to care for the records of our milling heritage and make them freely available to the public for research and learning. The Archive benefits from the help of a strong core of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, including a number of university students looking for work experience in archiving and older people who are milling enthusiasts or retired millers.
Commenting on the award, Development Manager Liz Bartram said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and we are confident the project will engage people in the story of flour milling. We wish to spread the knowledge of the history of flour milling – something hugely relevant to all of us in providing our daily bread – to different groups of people on a local, national and international scale.”
