25/01/2016: The ASEAN feed industry after AEC

Established at the end of 2015, the ASEAN Economic Community or AEC marks the creation of a single market and production base comprising 10 member countries in Southeast Asia – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

According to the Alltech Global Feed Survey 2015, four ASEAN countries currently rank in the top 20 for global feed production – Indonesia at 12th place and 20 million tonnes, Thailand (14th) at 17 million tonnes, Vietnam (17th) at 14 million tonnes, and the Philippines (20th) at 12.4 million tonnes.

The ASEAN region represents some 60 million tonnes in feed production and an average feed per capita of 77,200 tonnes. As a comparative benchmark, feed per capita stands at 147,000 tonnes in China and 197,000 tonnes in Japan.

Considering ASEAN’s growth potential and rising middle income status, feed production is expected to increase with regional economic growth at 7 percent pushing up demand for animal protein.

Under the AEC, ASEAN member states have pledged to work towards enhancing competitiveness and equitable economic growth, while further integrating the regional bloc into the global economy through trade. The liberalisation of goods and services within the AEC is expected to increase investments in feed processing and manufacturing.

Differences in the feed manufacturing standards and orientation between countries – contrast Thailand’s export focused livestock sector with greater domestic market reliance in Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam – are also expected to boost intra-ASEAN investments and technical cooperation in feed production.

Insights at VICTAM/ FIAAP/ GRAPAS 2016
Such trends will be discussed at the 2nd ASEAN Feed and Rice Symposium 2016 on 30 March, and FIAAP Animal Nutrition Conference Asia on 29 March. These are just two of many conferences at VICTAM/ FIAAP/ GRAPAS Asia 2016, the most widely anticipated show for the animal feed, rice and grain milling business in Southeast Asia.

FIAAP, the show segment for all things related to feed technology, ingredients and additives, has been growing steadily with each edition, reflecting the developments in the Asian animal feed sector.

Over 200 exhibitors and many new product launches, including from some of the biggest names in feed milling technology and equipment for the livestock and food grain sectors, will be present at this year’s sell-out event. VICTAM Asia 2016 celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and will be held at BITEC Bangkok on 29-31 March.
