08/02/2016: IAOM MEA: Call for papers

You are invited to submit your educational papers for the upcoming 27th Annual IAOM MEA Region Conference & Expo.

Your entry should include the following documents:

  • Completed application form - download it from these links: PDF file, MS Word file
  • At least one-page abstract of your proposed presentation, explaining why it is important to millers in the Middle East & Africa

Incomplete and/or late submissions will not be considered.
Final selection of presentations is solely at the discretion of the IAOM MEA Education Committee.

Presentation schedule
Technical, Pasta Production, Feed Milling, What’s New, and Grain Commodities Trade & Finance presentations will be delivered any time between 25 to 27 October 2016.

Format

  • Technical - 25-minute oral presentation (English)
  • Pasta Production - 25-minute oral presentation (English) 
  • Feed Milling - 25-minute oral presentation (English)
  • What’s New - 15-minute oral presentation (English)
  • Grain Commodities Trade & Finance - 15-minute oral presentation (English)  
Each session (comprised of 3-5 presentations) will be followed by a 10-minute panel Q&A session. In case a speaker needs more presentation time, the Education Committee will evaluate and decide depending on the topic.

Scope
All presentations should be non-commercial in content and should address flour and feed milling industry innovations, standards, and trends. 

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

A. Technical

  • Compare and contrast compact flour milling against standard flour milling
In Ethiopia most of the mills are compact mills with very short break and reduction system, with no detachers, no purifiers and with air filters of poor cleaning system. Washing machines are being used for cleaning in most of these mills. Comparison of the flow diagrams and operation of the two different types of mills, the flour yield and quality and overall efficiency would help millers to understand limitations of their mills, see how to optimise their operation and evaluate options available for improvement.
  • Advantages of industrial milling of maize, teff, and sorghum and available technologies
In Ethiopia, Maize is number one in volume of production followed by teff. Teff ingra is the most preferred bread by most Ethiopians. Yet there is no industrial milling of either maize or teff currently in Ethiopia. Ethiopia also produces a substantial quantity of sorghum, all of which is currently milled at cottage mills. A paper on this will create awareness on the subject and aspire millers to evaluate investing in industrial milling of these cereals.
  • Challenges in the supply of wheat to flour mills in Ethiopia
The demand for wheat in Ethiopia during the last few years has been greater than the local supply and government is importing wheat which is being used only for bread at subsidised price. The price of local wheat is also increasing significantly from year to year. Most of the local wheat supply comes from small land holders and getting consistent quality of wheat in big volumes is difficult. 
Currently, there is no government or other body that make assessment on the yearly production before or after harvest that provides information to millers on the volume of wheat produced based on some standardised quality parameters.
There is no standard quality grading and pricing based on quality. A paper on the subject could help to understand the impact of the problem on the industry and initiate a further study that will recommend how to tackle the problem.
  • Lack of trained millers and the need for flour milling technology training
Most of the flour mills are being operated by unskilled professionals. There are only few professionals who received proper training in milling technology abroad as there is no local institutions for flour milling technology training. As a result, most of the mills are being operated inefficiency. A paper that asses the magnitude of the problem and recommends solution could be interesting and helpful to the Ethiopian millers.
  • Durum milling, applied technologies
What are the differences in the cleaning and milling technology between wheat and durum. How to produce a high quality durum semolina or durum pasta flour. Which parameters in the durum semolina and durum flour are having an influence in the pasta production.
