16/03/2016: Alltech celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with first Irish craft beer in China

Five Irish craft beer varieties tasted at annual Beijing Irish Ball

Alltech hosted an advance tasting of the first Irish craft beer in China for more than 600 people on Saturday, March 12 at the 24th annual Beijing Irish Ball. The company announced it will introduce five varieties of craft beer, produced by its subsidiary, Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co., to the mainland China market on St Patrick's Day, March 17.

"Alltech has been a proud sponsor of the Beijing Irish Ball for years,” said Dr Mark Lyons, Alltech's global vice president and head of Greater China.

“There is no better way to introduce the first formal distribution of Irish craft beers to mainland China than as part of this great event."

The China launch follows Alltech's 2015 purchase of the Station Works craft brewery in Newry, County Down, Ireland. The five new craft beer varieties to be introduced in China are: Foxes Rock™ Irish Pale Ale, Foxes Rock™ India Pale Ale, Foxes Rock™ Red Ale, Foxes Rock™ Irish Stout and Finn™ Irish Craft Lager, a Pilsner-style beer.

"These products embody six generations of Irish brewing and distilling heritage,” said Dr Lyons.

“My father first worked in brewing at the Harp Brewery just down the road from the operation in Newry, and my family is delighted to share a bit of our heritage with China.

"Our Irish craft beers follow the proud tradition of our award-winning line of Kentucky beers and spirits, including our Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale® and Town Branch® Bourbon,” he continued.

“Our beverages have been delighting consumers in China since 2012 and are available in more than 300 locations across the country.”

Dr Lyons added, “China’s beer market continues to grow, with a total sales volume of more than 50 billion liters last year. At the same time, the demand among Chinese consumers for premium products, such as craft and specialty beers and spirits, is growing rapidly. Alltech is proud to serve this vibrant market at such an exciting time in its development.”

The 2015 Alltech Global Craft Beer Survey highlighted the low uptake of craft brewing in China. While the country has the largest population and second largest GDP in the world, the Alltech survey reported China has just 53 craft breweries. Given that China rivals the US as beer drinkers and is close to doubling in terms of consumption, will there be a brewery boom in the country’s future?
