The Mills Archive is launching the Great British Mill Race competition in conjunction with the SPAB National Mills Weekend, 14-15 May 2016.

You can help them to encourage participation in the Great British Mill Race by displaying their poster (download a copy HERE), by following the Mill Race on social media using #gbmillrace and by spreading the word.

The Great British Mill Race is part of the Heritage Lottery Fund-supported 'From Quern to Computer' project.

How you can help the Mills Archive document the mills of the UK:

Launching 14 May 2016

The Mills Archive are proud to host a huge database of over 10,600 mills and historic mill sites from all over the UK. As you can imagine - keeping this information up to date, adding new mills and images of mills is an enormous challenge!

They need your help.

Join the Great British Mill Race by uploading photographs and comments to a web form hosted on the Mills Archive website, relating to mills you have seen or visited all over the UK.  They’re fully mobile ready, so you can join the Mill Race using your smartphone whenever and wherever you spot a mill.  This information will be used to update and improve their existing Mills Index.

They've even got a handy tool to search for mills near you, wherever you are, when you're out and about this summer.

The Great British Mill Race: Quick Start Guide

1. From 14 May 2016, visit: www.gbmillrace.org
2. Find your mill.
3. Snap away: send them your pictures and mill information updates.
4. You're a Great British Mill Racer!  Keep up to date with new entries, pictures & prizes by following #gbmillrace

Stay up to date
The Mills Archive will be using the hashtag #gbmillrace to talk about the Great British Mill Race via social media. The Mills Archive uses social media platforms to communicate and engage with their audience (and potential audience), by sharing information and news about their service, events and collections.  You can find the Mills Archive on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and on their blog, Mill Writing.

The Mills Archive look forward to receiving your entries to the Great British Mill Race.

As Project Leader, Mildred Cookson comments: "This is a great opportunity to get your friends involved - helping to increase our knowledge of just how many mills are out there."
