On
11 July, at a special awards lunch at 21 Arlington Street, London, spiritual
home of the UK flour milling industry, nabim President, Duncan Monroe,
presented six millers with their Advanced Milling Diplomas
He congratulated the six on the considerable time and effort they had put into
the diploma programme over a period of eighteen months, including residential
weeks at nabim’s partners, Campden BRI (Chipping Campden) and the Buhler
Training Centre (Uzwil, Switzerland).
Duncan went on to remind his audience that “the Diploma programme is all about safeguarding the future of the UK flour milling industry, providing skills, knowledge and understanding that will produce the technical leadership the industry needs in order to provide our customers and the final consumer with the consistent and high quality products they seek.”
Receiving their Diplomas were: Neil Gordon (Carrs Flour, Kirkcaldy); Daniel Lister (Whitworth Bros, Worksop); Karl McGill (ADM Milling, Liverpool); Paul Moden (Whitworth Bros, Holbeach); David Naylor (Allied Mills, Manchester); and Simon White (W&H Marriage and Sons, Chelmsford).
The Advanced Milling Diploma was developed in the early years of this century in response to member companies’ wish that nabim provide a practical and technical training programme significantly beyond the level of its existing distance learning programme and vocational qualifications.
The aims of the programme include:
• to provide further scope for the development of millers of the highest potential;
• to improve the industry’s skills base, meeting its changing training needs;
• to provide a means by which millers may gain a greater technical understanding of flour functionality;
• to apply advanced theoretical knowledge in practical skills training.
The programme has now been run four times (starting in 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2015); a total of 29 candidates have set out on the journey and, with today’s awards, the total number of Diplomas issued has reached 24.
The six Diplomas given out today represent the largest number since the first year of the programme and also the first time a 100 percent pass rate has been achieved.
