The 8th Annual Southeast Asia Regional meeting of IAOM was held at the InterContinental Asiana Saigon, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from October 1-3, 2017.
The three-day event attracted just under 200 attendees and beside a full two-day educational and new development conference in flour milling, it also hosted a small table-top exhibition hall with some 45 exhibitor companies promoting the latest in milling technology and a mill tour.
The two-day conference was organised and opened by Raj Kumar Garg of IAOM SEA Leadership Council andIAOM Vice-President Jeff Hole. The event offered 19 presentations ranging from wheat market trends in the region to density separation of milling grains. The three Educational Sessions attracted good attendance to hear: 'How to get the most our of your mill' to 'Tempering revolution and wheat sterilisation' to 'Flour fortification' to 'Secure closures for open-mouth bags' and 'How to get the most our of your NIR instrument.'
But it was the 'What's New' session that attracted greatest interest among delegates and in particular the presentation my Pietro Burbalarga of OMAS, Italy in explaining it's new roller machine 'Leonardo - A revolutionary rollermill.' Other presenters in this section included Christian Carillo of Buhler Singapore on the range of new and improved equipment now available from his company. Other topics dealt with enzymatic flour, high performance flour bagging, antimicrobial composite materials and concluded with a panel discussion.
The final presentation on the last day was made by Mr Hole outlining the construction of a new mill in the USA.
However, a highlight of the event was the opening day's mill tour to a snack food manufacturer on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, who had installed a 2-5 tonne-per-hour turnkey stand-along multi-grain 'swing' mill within an 18-metre tall tower inside an open-plan warehouse facility - all based on three new Leonardo roller mills with their independent variable-drive rolls and ability to change seamlessly and noiselessly between grains.
The event's Platinum Sponsors were: Turkish companies Alapala Makina, Genc Degirmen - Gmach and IMAS Makina Sanayi AS. They were jointed by Premier Tech Chronos Ltd.
Silver Sponsors were Swiss companies Buhler Asia Pte Ltd, and Sefar while Bronze Sponsorship was take up by Brabender GmbH. A lunch and the mill tour were provided by OMAS of Italy. Milling and Grain sponsored the wifi.
