Grain purchasing and trading course coming in April, USA

Offering focused training courses on the mechanics of purchasing commodities and featuring detailed discussions on cash, futures, markets and financing, the IGP Institute will hold two sections of the IGP–KSU Grain Purchasing course.

The basic course will be held April 1-4, 2019 and the advanced course will be offered April 8-12, 2019. Participants also have the option of taking the full course including basic and advanced offerings. In addition, there will be a field trip to a grain export facility between the sections.

This course series benefits those individuals who are responsible for buying U.S. grains for feed or food. Participants can expect to discuss how grain is traded and transported, USDA grading standards, and grain trade rules and contracting during the basic training. During the advanced offering, participants can look forward to discussing topics on futures, options, and risk management strategy.

'At the IGP's Grain Purchasing course, participants can learn all the basics that are needed to fully understand how the procurement of grains is done at the international level,' says Carlos Campabadal, IGP Institute outreach specialist feed manufacturing and grain quality management. 'Also, we focus in detail on specific topics that are geared to the advanced level of purchasing commodities.' Along with the export facility, field trip participants will also visit the FGIS Tech Centre and the IFCStone office, both located in Kansas City.

Previous course participant, Jerry Kim, agricultural products trading and purchasing at PanOcean Co., Ltd., explains that he valued the last year's field trip experience.

'I really enjoyed the time in Portland, visiting the UGC elevator, and the other lectures were also really helpful for me,' says Kim. 'By taking this course, I can recognize what I'm doing exactly and use some of the effective tools to do those tasks continuously.'
