Resilience, ‘bounce’ and sustainability: Key factors to overcome the impact of the pandemic and to feed a global population

'The next 24 months across the world will be very tough,' says Stefan Scheiber, CEO of Bühler Group during a virtual press conference when he spoke to some 40-plus media representatives about industry resilience this morning from Uzwil in Switzerland.

'We see many industries having issues and problems because obviously consumers and industrial players have big uncertainties to face. We would like to be a partner with them and for them, for the short term, over the next two years and most probably longer - this is what I estimate we will see as an impact on business globally,' he adds.

He is focusing his company's efforts into three directions to address the pandemic, but also issues of environment, climate change and feeding 10 billion people by 2050. Those three goals start with Resilience, Bounce Back and Sustainability.

At the same time as addressing the next two or three-year period, 'it is also very important to be ready for the bounce back, so there is no time to be wasted' and new technologies have to be ready.

'We need to come up with completely new approaches and we want to contribute to this new requirement. Some people talk about a new normality going forward and Bühler will not wait- Bühler will share and pro-actively come up with new solutions as fast as they can be effectively produced.

'And then we have heard voices that suggest sustainability, perhaps, might not be on the forefront anymore because we have pressing and immediate challenges which have nothing to do with sustainability. I feel it is exactly the opposite. We now have seen we can make an impact; we cannot wait for old situations to come back.

'We do believe that it is exactly now that we need to come up with solutions with new collaboration platforms with absolutely new approaches to drive sustainable solutions for making the world better, making consistent solutions which also use less energy, use less water and are much more efficient going forward. So, the sustainability agenda will be even richer and will be more supported going forward.'

Later in the conference, Mr Scheiber referred again to sustainability, saying it 'is more important now than ever before. If we think about our food system, how do we nourish 10 billion people sustainably in 2050?'

He said food had become a pleasure which was another dimension on top of the sustainability challenge.

'It must be sustainable, affordable and people must have access, and, in addition, they must be delighted by the food they consume,' added Mr Scheiber.
