The Aqua Feed Extrusion Conference 2020

by Rebecca Sherratt, Features Editor, Milling and Grain

On July 8-9th, 2020 the fourth edition of the Aqua Feed Extrusion Conference took to the stage, teaching attendees how to optimise their feed processing systems. The conference was organised through collaboration with International Aquafeed magazine, Dr Mian Riaz of Texas A&M University and VNU Exhibitions.

For the very first time, the Aqua Feed Extrusion Conference was hosted online, in response to COVID-19. Despite the change in format, our ten expert speakers gave informative and innovative presentations to 70+ attendees on both days of the event and the conference proved to be a great success for all involved.

Day one

Single- or twin-screw extruders for aqua feed?
by Dr Mian Riaz, Texas A&M University

Following opening comments by International Aquafeed Publisher Roger Gilbert and VNU’s Business Development Manager Roel Schoenmaker, Dr Mian Riaz gave an extremely useful and thorough introduction to the different benefits of both single-screw and twin-screw extrusion.

Whilst single-screw extrusion has typically been the most widely used method of extrusion for the past 30 years, twin-screw extrusion is rapidly gaining popularity within the feed industry. Twin-screw extruders allow for greater flexibility when handling both unique products and parameters, but also carry a weightier price tag. Dr Riaz went on to discuss why users might opt for either single-screw or twin-screw extruders, providing attendees with plenty of information to make the best decision for their own businesses.

Foundations of processing centre design
by Mr Jonathan Iman, Corporate Project Services

Mr Iman returned to the Aqua Feed Extrusion Conference once again to provide more insight into optimising your extrusion project/facility. Proper investments into project planning are vital to a successful extrusion project, he emphasises, but managing a new project on a large scale can prove to be a daunting task, which is where Corporate Project Services (CPS) can help.

CPS offer professional services for those looking to establish a plant, providing customers with detailed facility layout drawings, flow diagrams, plant ROI, plant P&ID, Food Safety Programme assistance and a variety of other project management services. Feasibility studies, equipment layout, facility audits and contractor plans are only some of the many features that companies must take into account when establishing new facilities, and CPS can offer comprehensive support throughout every stage of plant production.

Reach and keep every grain safe with Crover, a robot that swims through grain

by Dr Lorenzo Conti, Crover Ltd, UK

Crover Ltd is on a mission to help grain-storekeepers reduce losses and maintain optimum storage conditions. Its product, the “Crover”, is the first and only remote monitoring robotic device that provides real-time data on the temperature and moisture levels throughout the whole grain storage unit while “swimming” through the grain.

Grain is the second most traded commodity in the world after oil and yet much of its supply chain processes are still dependent on archaic and old methods. In fact, up until now, a grain storage unit is a “black box” – there is no clear picture of what is going on inside.

Like a drone’s wings in air, or a boat’s rotor in water, a Crover robot uses our patented method for locomotion in bulk solids to move through solid grains, while building a full map of conditions within the grain storage unit using sensors on its body. Grain-storekeepers will finally be able to enter and “see within” any storage vessel and make proactive decisions to start optimising yield and revenue from every harvest besides #SavingGrains.

Store grain adequately or lose profit!
Cereal grains are the basis of staple food, yet post-harvest losses during long-term storage are exceptionally high, above 20 percent in the UK and worldwide. Pests are to blame, with grain moisture content and temperature being the most significant factors.

In developing and designing the Crover robot, we’ve researched and spoken to some of our potential customers so that our Crovers not only address the issue of verifying grain conditions within a storage unit, but they are also being created with the end user in mind. We’re taking into account the entire customer journey, from setting up a Crover to receiving alerts on your phone when conditions aren’t optimal.

Unlike current grain monitoring solutions, most of which only measure one variable and have limited reach, Crover’s Phase 1 features and functions can lead to a reduction in spoilage, an increase in efficiency, and saved time as well as lowered overall costs. In Phase 2, Crover has the potential to become an all-in-one solution; additional sensors will be implemented on the Crover robot, to provide real-time measurements of grain volume in stock, insect presence, phosphine concentration, as well as to intervene topically to suboptimal conditions and to hinder the growth of infestations.

Hamlet Protein expands its USA Poultry Team

Hamlet Protein, a multinational company dedicated to vegetable protein specialty ingredients for young animals, has announced the hiring of poultry nutritionist Kyle Brown. From its US headquarters in Findlay, Ohio, the company is targeting growth in the poultry segment in North and Central America.

COVID-19 restrictions have affected the poultry industry across the world in H1-2020. Supply reduction followed from lower placements and parent stock reductions. The impact of Covid-19 on economies will drive the market for the remainder of the year. In a more volatile and price driven market poultry might benefit, being the cheapest meat protein with a short and flexible production cycle. The US is one of the world's main poultry producing regions. In 2020, the US market is expected to show a minimum growth.

Erik Visser, Hamlet Protein CEO, commented, 'Hamlet Protein has a strong track record in piglet and calf nutrition. We have a clear ambition to grow in poultry as well. That is why we invest in people and research, specifically in the US.'

Mr Brown received his BS in Poultry Science, a Minor in Agricultural Economics, and is currently completing his PhD in Poultry Science at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. He has done extensive research on the usage of non-starch polysaccharide degrading enzymes and evaluating different mineral sources effect on availability and broiler performance. His dissertation research is evaluating the efficacy of exogenous enzymes in corn-soybean meal diets with varying nutrient profiles.

Mr Brown will provide technical and nutritional consulting to Hamlet Protein's business partners across the region, oversee poultry research studies in NCA, and work with the global technical team.

Grady Fain, Regional Director NCA at Hamlet Protein, commented, 'Our research data and outcome of trial work in poultry shows that the inclusion of our products in starter diets generates a positive impact in the total production cycle and fits in an AGP-free approach. The feedback of our customers has been positive and we feel confident about our opportunities in the North American market.'

Can thinking smart beat thinking big? TSC’S square silos around the world

by Vaughn Entwistle, Managing Editor, Milling and Grain

Top Silo Constructions (TSC) is a Dutch company which supplies and installs silos for both feed and food supply chains. On July 7th, 2020, they hosted a twenty-minute webinar entitled ‘Storage: Can thinking smart beat thinking big?' The webinar was hosted by Lars Oostveen who explained that storage is a fundamental and necessary part of any food or feed mill.

Approaches to storage planning
The webinar provided practical examples of how a thoughtful, reasoned approach to storage design provides a more flexible approach to storage planning and produces more economical and efficient results that also allow for future expansion.

The first example involved a case study of a Klaramill, a Dutch veal producer that operates its own feed mill using TSC square silos in its design. Rober-Jan Klaranbeek of Klaramill explains that veal is a premium product and customers expect that feed will likewise include premium ingredients. Customers expect their veal to be a pure white colour. If there is any dust in the feed silo it can affect the colour of the veal and make it less than pure white.

Therefore, dust prevention in the feed silo is very important. Preventing dust in the silo requires precision building as Sven Konings, Commercial Manager at TSC, explains, “TSC is very accurate in building silos which provides a good connection between silo walls and floors, as it prevents dust from accumulating on floors.”

The advantages of square silos

The webinar continued by exploring the advantages of square bins versus round silos for both feed and food. While storage has always been about maximising storage volume for the minimum cost in the feed and food processing industry, recent trends and world events have reinforced the importance of efficient storage.

TSC specialises in square silo systems to customers around the world. Their square silo designs provide numerous advantages: modular, integrated, efficient, versatile, hygienic and, of increasing importance in our uncertain times, flexibility. In the case of feed deliveries, the square design’s space efficiency, allowing square units to be concentrated on a small footprint, maximises land use.

Challenging UK wheat harvest could lead to increased bread prices

According to a recent article published by the BBC, the UK is set to experience what could be the worst wheat harvest in 40 years, which could lead to an increase in the price of flour and bread.

Farmers have said that the extreme weather they have been facing could mean that wheat yields are down up to 40 percent. Experts have said that the UK is likely to receive more of the same weather going forward due to climate change.

(CC BY-SA 2.0)
According to the article, some millers have pre-emptively pushed the price up of their flour by 10 percent and have warned that a no-deal Brexit could make the matter even worse.

The situation wheat farmers are experiencing has been referred to as a triple-whammy. The unusually heavy autumn rain meant that they could not plant as much wheat as they usually would, and the waterlogged soil led to less successful plants. This was followed up by widespread flooding caused by storm Jorge in late February. Then there was a drought throughout much of the UK which meant there was a less-than-optimal uptake of nutrients. Finally the heavy rain this August has caused many farmers to delay harvesting their crop.

"We're looking at a 30 percent reduction in our good fields, in some of our poor fields it's is even more", said Matt Culley, an arable farmer from Hampshire who is chair of the NFU's crop board.

Mr Culley said that some of his grain stores are virtually empty where normally they would be full at this time of year, and that much of the wheat that the rain has forced him to leave in the fields will only be fit for animal feed.

85 percent of wheat used by UK flour millers is typically grown domestically, and so the millers will have to make up for the losses with increased imports.

'The price of wheat has been increasing steadily since the summer, the price of flour will rise,' said Alex Waugh who runs the National Association of British and Irish Millers. 'Because the margins millers operate on are very tight, they will have no choice but to pass some of this increase on to consumers by raising prices.'

Pre-storage silos: How many and what size?

by PK Bhardwaj, Grain Storage, Handling and Processing Expert, Icepco Grainiks, India

Pre-storage is a set of single or multiple silos which are located in-between grain receiving pits and cleaning section of a grain storage facility. pre-storage silos bring efficiency to the storage system and make the operation trouble free. However, I have seen many people who get totally confused while deciding on pre-storage silos. Maximum people get confused concerning the quantity of pre-storage silos and the capacity of pre-storage silos.

Since there is not much literature readily available concerning pre-storage silos, I thought to write this article to make decision making quick and easy.

Why do you need pre-storage silos?
First and foremost, pre-storage silos are required to create a buffer in-between the receiving pit and cleaning section. This buffer ensures that the conveying system, as well as the cleaning section, can receive continuous and uniform feed. Conveyors, elevators, cleaners and rotary sieves etc perform at their highest efficiency when the feed is continuous and uniform. Besides, uniform, and continuous feed also saves a lot of electrical power.

What type of pre-storage silo is best for me? Hopper bottom or flat bottom?
Preferably, pre-storage silos should be of the hopper bottom type because hopper bottom silos are self-cleaning and do not require any manual intervention while unloading and cleaning like flat bottom silos typically do.

However, in case the receiving material exceeds 2,400 tonnes (i.e. 1200mt x 2) per day, one can also opt for flat bottom silos to save on capital cost. The only difficulty people face in a flat bottom silo is that 85 percent of its grains are unloaded through gravity but, for the remaining 15 percent, you will need to run a sweep auger and, once the silo is fully empty, you will need to clean it from inside before refilling. These activities are unproductive and time consuming.

How many minimum pre-storage silos you need?
Ideally there should be at least two pre-storage silos, so that the loading and unloading of grain does not happen simultaneously from one silo. While you are loading the first silo with grains, the other silo is in unloading mode. This ensures the ideal, first-in first-out sequence and increases the life of pre-storage silos.

However, due to space constraints, if you have no other option but to go with only one silo then you must go for the hopper bottom silo only. Hopper bottom silos should essentially be interlocked with low level and high-level probes so that the silo is never too full or never too empty, as this may damage the silo.

'It offers a number of key advantages,' he explained. 'Principally, the service tower eliminates the need for cranes, which are traditionally used to lift the screws. This reduces costs and improves the overall safety of the operation. Also, because the tower is specifically designed for the task, the whole process is faster.'

The tower's structure is self-supporting, allowing it to be moved. When required for a project, it needs to be secured at dedicated fixing points on the jetty. A replacement screw is placed and fitted into the tower's lowered screw-holding cradle, specifically matched to the dimensions of the screw. A winch raises the cradle and screw into an upright position. When in place, the new screw is locked into position and the outer diameter bearing wings are assembled. The same procedure is repeated with the next screw section. Removal and disassembly of the screws are achieved using the same equipment, but in reverse.

'Although specifically designed for screw replacements, it can also be built with additional levels to service and inspect other areas of the vertical conveyor,' noted Mr Ohlsson. 'For any new or existing unloader, this is an extremely cost and time effective addition to any operator's service portfolio.'

By using adaptors, the service tower can accommodate the various screw lengths and sizes of the Siwertell product range.

BGG World (BGG) recently announced that its manufacturing site, Xinjiang Jinshuo Plant Additive Co, Ltd. in Xinjiang, China, has become the first licorice production facility in the world to obtain GMP+ FSA certification based on GMP+ C6 of the GMP+ International Standard GMP+.

GMP stands for "Good Manufacturing Practices" and the + stands for the integration of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), while FSA stands for Feed Safety Assurance. GMP+ FSA certified companies demonstrate that they meet all requirements and conditions for the assurance of feed safety.

BGG’s Xinjiang plant is 100 percent dedicated to the manufacture of licorice extracts and licorice derivatives, including food, flavours and cosmetic ingredients, and with this new registration, also feed ingredients.

"We are very proud to include this certification and to help advance our animal health business," said Christian Artaria, CEO of BGG Europe. “The production of animal feed is a shared responsibility of the entire feed chain and, with this new certification, we are further outlining the responsible practices we commit to.”

BGG has been extracting licorice roots since their founding in 1995. With 25 years of continuous experience, they have become well-known in the food, flavour and personal care field as one of the very few companies controlling the entire production chain and delivering unmatched quality in these products.

the interview | Professor Li Dongsen, President, Zhengzhou Golden Grain Mechanical Engineering Co Ltd

Professor Li Dongsen is a professor at Henan University of Technology, China. From 1977-1981 he studied at the Grain Engineering Department of Zhengzhou Grain Institute (now formally known as the Henan University of Technology). From 1981-2017, he has taught students about grains and oil as part of the Food College within Henan University of Technology. He has been engaged in teaching, scientific research and technology development within cereal sciences and engineering. Professor Dongsen has also served as Deputy Secretary General of the China Wheat Association.
Professor Dongsen also serves as the Founder and Chairman of Zhengzhou Gold Grain Mechanical Engineering Co Ltd.

How did you come to be involved in this industry?
Entry into this industry was, initially, a national necessity. I was born in 1957 and was one of the first batch of students admitted, after the resumption of the college entrance exam in China. Due to various reasons, my admission notice was sent late, and I was finally able, after a short delay, to enter Zhengzhou Grain University to study. Although entering this industry was originally arranged by the state, I still feel a sense of pride as a witness of the development of China’s flour industry over the past three or four decades.

What do you see as a possible challenge that the grain industry may face over the next five years and how will your company play a part in prevention or solving it?
From the perspective of the grain processing industry and the development of the Chinese flour industry, it can be concluded that flour-based innovations are only relevant for a short time before new innovations are required to keep up with the technology. This seems to be an ongoing situation and I, personally, think there are a few topics that we need to think about over the next few years:
Product development: Domestic flour competition is very fierce, as in the buyer’s market there has been an issue with oversupplying for many years. Short-term, enterprises must conduct in-depth research on product development and comprehensively consider the market demand, their own advantages and their own technological skills. This is also the professional advantage of our company. We will help customers avoid mistakes in product development as much as possible, through conducting analysis with our unique solutions.
Personnel training mechanisms: For the grain industry, the key to developing lasting development plans and whether enterprises can continue to grow is having the right people. Retaining talent and setting up the training for this talent can prove challenging for many small and medium-sized flour enterprises. My experience as a teacher has resulted in Zhengzhou Golden Grain recognising this talent and knowing how to best promote this growth. Our company also provides a role similar to industry headhunting. Every time we discuss plans with our customers, we will also offer some suggestions regarding the enterprise’s personnel structure.
Intelligent manufacturing: The last five years have seen the dramatic evolution of 5G development. 5G is a new starting point for technology, and it is exciting to think about the opportunities and challenges that this network revolution may bring.
For the industrial field, 5G will bring a huge impact once it is popularised. It is possible to bring revolutionary influences to the production efficiency of enterprises, once 5G can be utilised in product production.
Our company is also building its own Internet of Things (IoT) platform. Through its existing electrical automation, we can add more sensors to our solutions to provide certain reference for big data analysis. In a later stage, we will also conduct in-depth research on the application of intelligent manufacturing.
The impact of genetic modification (GM) technology: GM may not be a challenge per se, but it may be one of the most important transformative factors for the future of flour. Although the risks associated with GM are different, it can be said that GM technology itself is the inevitable next step to ensure human survival and development in the future.
With complete decoding of a genetic map of grain, it can be expected that there will be more genetically modified grain products in the future, which will bring profound changes to the production of the grain processing industry. This new evolution is certainly something which Zhengzhou Golden Grain are paying great attention to.

How has China’s flour industry developed in recent years?
The development of China’s flour industry is difficult to generalise. Since the reform in the 1980s, there has been much phased development taking place. First of all, after the reform, the market economy began to eliminate some state-owned enterprises. Due to the change of the market demand structure, the domestic grains market was opened up and the price of wheat decreased for some time, and the profit gained from produce rose. In the main wheat producing areas, tens of thousands of new flour milling companies emerged. According to the statistics, in 2010, there were nearly 40,000 flour processing enterprises in China, among which there were more than 200 large and medium-sized flour processing enterprises with a wheat processing capacity above 400 tonnes-per-day (tpd).
After China’s entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO) the price of wheat and the profit made within the flour milling industry was almost zero. These conditions made it inevitable to readjust the flour market in China. This readjustment will take several years but will further improve each and every link within the industry chain, ranging from farmers, to depots, processing plants all the way through to the final production factory. Eventually we hope China can form a group of large flour milling enterprises that is resilient against risks sand fluctuations, to efficiently and securely serve the Chinese market.

What makes your company stand out from its competitors? Do you have any projects or plans that we should look out for over the coming year from you and your company?
For Zhengzhou Golden Grain, the most important factor in what makes us unique is our understanding of the processing technology itself. Our impressive industry experience has given us great support when development new innovations. Other product development and talent training services are inseparable from this core advantage.
Of course, the development of our company is also a result of how the living standard of the Chinese people has greatly improved. The food market in China is based upon grain as a staple food. New trends are emerging constantly, ranging from convenience to the concept of leisure food.
Zhengzhou Golden Grain is dedicated to the continuous research and improvement of the comprehensive flour milling process, to take on any and all opportunities for development within the market. Despite the fierce competition among grain machine equipment manufacturers, our company has been able to survive. This is, in part, due to our continuous research regarding flour milling.
Over the course of the next year, we will continue to play to our unique advantages to bolster growth. We will continue to provide our customers with the most advanced processing designs and concepts, providing high-performance products. At the same time, we will focus on software and launch software products that can improve production efficiency, combined with 5G innovations.

What are you most proud of since founding Zhengzhou Golden Grain?
Personally, I am proud that I have witnessed the evolution of China’s flour industry, from being somewhat unorthodox in its production methods to becoming a leading flour producing country. As one of the participants in this evolution, I have left my own mark in this development of the industry.
From the perspective of entrepreneurship, our company has developed into a solution supplier for the food industry, offering such a great variety of solutions for all manner of processes. I think our company contributes to the development of society and improves society as a whole.
I am also very proud of our ability to train our personnel, producing professional engineers, marketing teams and more. This is the biggest driving force of our company’s pride.
