Bühler and DIL introduce the new Technology Centre Proteins of the Future in Germany

Swiss technology group Bühler AG and the food technology research institute DIL Deutsches Institut für Lebensmitteltechnik e. V. have further strengthened their partnership. The unique technology centre in Quakenbrück, Germany, provides state-of-the-art research, test, and production infrastructure for the development of healthy, sustainable-protein food products. The centre is fully operational and ready to receive requests from customers.
 

Healthy and sustainable food production
'The opening of the Technology Centre Proteins of the Future emphasises the strong partnership we have forged with DIL in a very short time frame. With our combined expertise we are making a vital contribution to closing the protein gap,' says Stefan Scheiber, CEO at Bühler Group.

The Technology Centre Proteins of the Future supports customers throughout the entire process from prototyping new products and upscaling of production processes to contract manufacturing for initial market phases and comprehensive consultancy services. Combined with the full protein value chain solutions from Bühler, ideas can be realised much faster in complete plant solutions tailored to customer needs.

The service offering for our customers in detail:
Prototyping – The team at the centre develops new formulations and applications and produces first prototypes with a pilot scale extrusion system. The service also includes process parameter optimisation.

Upscaling – Once the prototyping phase is completed, success criteria are defined for the upscaling process to full production capacity. Tests can be undertaken at the new full-scale extrusion plant.

Contract manufacturing – The service allows customers to launch products within a minimum time frame. As products are manufactured on the same machinery throughout, they can be moved to production stage quickly and with high levels of consistency. The quick-to-market approach minimises risk, as customers don't need to invest in equipment before a viable market penetration is reached.

Equipment consultancy – Once products have reached sufficient market share, the centre assists customers in choosing the right equipment for their plant. The highest levels of product consistency are achieved by installing the machinery used in the prototyping and initial manufacturing phases.

Powered by state-of-the-art technology
At the heart of the centre is Bühler's advanced extrusion IFS certified extrusion technology. The twin-screw extruder PolyTwin BCTG and the PolyCool cooling die deliver a production capacity of up to one metric ton per hour. The entire production cycle follows HACCP and GMP principles and guidelines.

In addition, the production unit features the most modern downstream equipment. The flexible extrusion setup is suitable for a wide range of food applications such as dry texturisation of proteins, wet texturisation of proteins, encapsulation of active ingredients and cooking extrusion of snack products. The multi-purpose cutting device from Holac cuts wet texturised proteins into strips, cubes, and chunks. A cryogenic Zip Roll from Air Liquide is installed for the rapid freezing of wet textures preserving product characteristics at the highest level. Special applications can be catered for on demand.

Additional services
The comprehensive offering is complemented by extensive laboratory services such as chemical, microbiological, and physical analytics of raw materials and analytics of extruded products including particle size distribution, texture analysis, thermal analysis, and microscopic analysis on different length scales. The centre also offers consultancy services concerning the development and process design of extruded food products.

The Technology Centre Proteins of the Future is situated at the DIL at the Food Science and Technology Campus Artland in Quakenbrück, host to over 250 scientists and technologists and a growing number of spin-offs and start-up businesses developing solutions that improve food safety and quality as well as technology enterprises.

The opening of the centre is accompanied by the 'Scale it up Innovation Challenge' jointly set up by Bühler, Cargill and Givaudan to foster new innovations and solutions to close the protein gap. A new fibre product for piglets has been launched by Hamlet Protein

Hamlet Protein, multinational producer of specialty ingredients for young animal nutrition, has announced the launch of HP FiberBoost©, a pure fibre product containing functional fibres produced specifically for dietetic use in piglets. The product completes Hamlet Protein's fibre range and offers producers an additional option when formulating diets without Zinc Oxide.

Therapeutic use of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) has been a very effective tool for preventing post-weaning diarrhoea in piglets. Without pharmacological levels of ZnO, and with the well-known restrictions on the use of antibiotics already in place, European producers are forced to look for alternative strategies to maintain animal performance and health.

Hamlet Protein CEO Erik Visser, comments, 'We do not think one single product can replace the current use of Zinc Oxide. A ZnO- free pig production requires improvements in many fields that include farm management, biosecurity, genetics, and nutrition. The product addresses a market demand from producers that are interested in pure fibre without the inclusion of protein.

Bram Schuit joins GMP+ International as their new Commercial Director

Bram Schuit will join GMP+ International in the new role of Commercial Director starting the 1st of September 2021. He joins Roland van der Post to complete the new management.

Mr Schuit joins GMP+ International from Kiwa where he served as International Business Development Manager. Mr Schuit's extensive experience has developed in diverse international marketing and commercial roles for organisations especially in the testing, inspection and certification (TIC) industry e.g. at Eurofins, SGS, TLR, Peterson Control Union, Bureau Veritas and Kiwa. He primarily garnered his experience in agri- commodities and in the food & feed business.

Mr Schuit says, 'By staying in close contact with current and future stakeholders in the entire global feed supply chain, we continue to strengthen the position of ourselves and partners in order to achieve our main 'Feed Safety Worldwide' goal'.

Dr Hazel Rooney and Paula Mc Cooey join Alltech Ireland’s pig and poultry teams

Alltech Ireland has announced the appointments of Dr Hazel Rooney as technical pig coordinator and Paula Mc Cooey as poultry manager. They join Alltech with valuable education and experience in their respective species and will work closely with the sales, marketing and research teams to support customers and partners.  

Dr Rooney will be responsible for coordinating and developing technical solutions for pigs for the Irish and European marketplace, working closely with the Alltech Ireland sales and gut health management teams and also as a liaison between Alltech's marketing and research teams.

'The Irish and European pig industry is currently facing a number of difficult challenges, and I look forward to working closely with those in the industry to overcome these challenges by improving pig health, welfare and growth performance,' says Dr Rooney.

Prior to joining Alltech, Dr Rooney received a bachelor's degree in animal science from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2016 and a Ph.D. in swine nutrition from UCD and the Teagasc Pig Development Department in 2019. Her doctoral research focussed on maternal feeding strategies during gestation and lactation to optimise annual sow output and promote the growth and development of progeny from large litters. She then spent a year working as a post-doctoral researcher in the Teagasc Pig Development Department in Ireland. 

As the Alltech Ireland poultry manager, Ms Mc Cooey is responsible for managing the poultry accounts across the island of Ireland. She will work closely with customers at all levels to advise, problem solve and provide solutions based on customer needs.

'The poultry industry is a thriving and progressive sector to be involved in,' Ms Mc Cooey commented. 'I look forward to working with producers and those in the industry to maximise on-farm potential and meet the challenges and demands that the industry faces.'

Ms Mc Cooey received a bachelor's degree in agriculture science from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2014. She then moved to England to work for MoyPark and spent two years learning about the business from the hatchery to the processing plant before becoming a broiler field advisor and was responsible for 36 farms across Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire. She continued to work for MoyPark in Northern Ireland as a farm compliance manager before moving to Western Brand in 2019. Here, she was responsible for driving performance and ensuring compliance on 75 broiler farms across Cavan, Monaghan and Mayo.

Dates announced for the 2022 Latin American Poultry Summit

The International Poultry Expo (IPE), part of the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE), and the Latin American Poultry Association (ALA) have announced the date for the 2022 Latin American Poultry Summit, to be held in-person 24 January, 2022.

In response to attendee feedback, several upgrades are being made to the program. This includes the development of a one-day agenda to allow all attendees to have as much time as possible to reconnect and engage with exhibitors on the trade show floor.

The theme for the 2022 Latin American Poultry Summit is, 'A Look at Today's and Tomorrow's Poultry Farming: Challenges and Answers', and will be presented in a new format. The Summit program will include two keynote speakers, a panel discussion, an overview of two research projects funded by USPOULTRY and ALA that were centred on issues relevant to the Latin American poultry industry, as well as additional education sessions throughout the day.

The education sessions will focus on topics around economic changes, technological inputs, disease, animal welfare and environmental sustainability. The Latin American Poultry Summit will provide several networking opportunities including a luncheon, coffee breaks and a reception. Special recognition will be given to students and advisors participating in the USPOULTRY Foundation International Student Program during the event.

The 2022 IPPE show dates are 25-27 January, and the event will be held at the Georgia World Congress Centre in Atlanta, Georgia.

US Wheat Associates welcomes suspension of Vietnam wheat import tariff

In a recent press release the US Wheat Associates (USW) has announced that it is grateful to the Biden Administration and USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) for their work alongside Vietnam's Ministry of Finance to reduce the cost of wheat for Vietnam's millers and consumers.

As part of a bilateral package announced during Vice President Kamala Harris' Indo-Pacific trip, Vietnam will reduce or eliminate import tariffs on several US commodities including wheat. The tariff suspensions are expected to be implemented soon and will help reduce food costs for the Vietnamese people. It will also help make US wheat more competitive in Vietnam's growing wheat market.

Vietnam, like many countries this year, has seen significant food and feed price inflation due to the rise in global commodity prices and COVID impacts on supply chains. Vietnam's government should be commended for taking this proactive step to assist their domestic millers and consumers.

The newly announced reduction follows one from July 2020, when Vietnam reduced its tariff on imported US wheat (excluding durum) from five percent to three percent in a revision of its Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariff rates.  Vietnam is the last remaining Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) country applying a tariff against US wheat imports but not against Canadian and Australian wheat, making today's announcement particularly noteworthy for US wheat growers.

Despite the tariffs, Vietnam's imports of US hard red winter (HRW), soft white (SW) and hard red winter (HRW) wheat exceeded 500,000 metric tons in marketing year 2020/21, second in volume only to Australia. Vietnam currently imports an average of more than three million metric tons of wheat per year.

The suspension was granted because of the dedicated work between USDA/FAS, co-operator organisations and the Vietnamese importers who petitioned their government to reduce or eliminate certain MFN tariffs to help hold down rising food and feed prices.

US Wheat Associates' (USW) mission is to develop, maintain, and expand international markets to enhance wheat's profitability for US wheat producers and its value for their customers in more than 100 countries. Its activities are made possible through producer checkoff dollars managed by 17 state wheat commissions and cost-share funding provided by USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.

EuroTier 2022 with guiding theme "Transforming Animal Farming'

The next EuroTier, the world's leading trade fair for animal farming and livestock management, will take place in 2022 and be held alongside EnergyDecentral, the leading trade fair for decentralised energy supply, from 15-18 November 2022 in Hanover, Germany. The organiser DLG (German Agricultural Society) has selected the guiding theme "Transforming Animal Farming" to underpin the technical program.

This award category allows exhibitors to submit concepts and future visions that are not yet market-ready and still in the development phase but already demonstrate strong potential for improved professional practice or process optimisation.

Satake Corporation announces recipients for its global Excellent Employee Award 2020

Registration for the XXVI International Conference 'Black Sea Grain and Oilseeds 2021/22' continues

The Russian Grain Union and the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies under the auspices of the Federal Service Rosselkhoznadzor in the Rostov, the Volgograd and the Astrakhan Regions and the Republic of Kalmykia and supported by the Russian Export Center (REC) will host on the 16th of September 2021 the XXVI International Conference 'Black Sea Grain and Oilseeds 2021/22' in the Congress-Hotel Don-Plaza 4*, Rostov-on-Don.
The Rostov region is supposed to be one of the biggest agricultural regions of our country. About 1/3 of the population lives in rural areas and the agricultural sector reaches 13 percent of the whole GDP. Lands close to the Don are distinguished to be extremely fertile. Every year Rostov-on-Don becomes the biggest platform in the Southern Federal District for presenting innovations and achievements of agricultural business that turned out to be the crucial factor for choosing it as a site of the XXVI International Conference 'Black Sea Grain and Oilseeds 2021/22'.

Traditionally participants will be offered an eventful and highly topical Program. Historically this conference is a key grain event. It traditionally takes place when the contours of a new harvest are quite clear while both the market prices and the regulator's behaviour are still being formed.

The conference will be attended by the key representatives of the Government of the Russian Federation, representatives of the biggest domestic agriholdings, domestic and multinational traders, millers, oilseed crushers, export terminal managers, banks, and domestic policy makers. It is expected that, as in previous years, 250-300 Russian and foreign guests will take part in this event.

AFIA’s Integrator Feed Facility of the Year applications are now open

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), in coordination with Feedstuffs, has opened the application phase for its Integrator Feed Facility of the Year (FFY) program. The program is open to all AFIA member integrator feed facilities.
'We are excited to recognise the integrator feed facilities that prioritise top-notch safety, quality and food safety and production efficiency," says Gary Huddleston, the AFIA's director of feed manufacturing and regulatory affairs. "Many of our members go above and beyond in keeping their operations running safely and efficiently, so it's good to acknowledge them."

The AFIA has been recognising excellent feed manufacturing facilities since 1985. In 2016, the AFIA created four distinct manufacturing categories to be more inclusive of our industry facilities. In 2021, the FFY program separated each category into its own individual program: liquid feed, commercial dry, premix and ingredient, and integrator, with each category having its own facility of the year award.

The application phase for the Integrator Feed Facility of the Year is now open and submissions, with the $100 application fee, are due by October 21.

GEAPS hold their in-person conference in Columbus, with over 1400 attendees altogether

The Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) hosted 1,406 attendees at GEAPS Exchange 2021 in Columbus earlier this month. The annual technical conference and exposition is a forum to see the newest technology and equipment in the grain industry and learn about the latest trends and best practices.

'As everyone has experienced over the last two years, the pandemic has really changed how we operate. The grain industry is people- and relationship-driven,' says GEAPS' Executive Director, Steve Records. 'It was great to once again provide a forum for people to get to meet, get to know each other, connect, share stories and build relationships that will last decades.'

'We've learned to change and adapt and use technology, but it doesn't replace shaking hands, clinking glasses and looking somebody in the eye,' says GEAPS International President Barb Grove, CGOM, Central Valley Ag. 'That's a very important part of our networking. I'm very excited we were able to gather in-person again.'

Safety was an overall theme of the event, with many education sessions centred around how to work smarter and safer. Oklahoma State University presented Grain Entrapment Rescue demonstrations throughout the show.

'I never thought I'd say that I'm excited for tradeshows, but it was kind of a pent-up demand of seeing your friends in the industry that you haven't seen,' says Jason Grahek, Knobelsdorff. 'It was special to get back to.'

Exchange 2022 is scheduled for March 26-29, 2022 at the Kansas City Convention Centre in Kansas City Missouri. Booth sales and registration for the event opens in the fall.

AFIA’s annual PISC brings industry colleagues together to reconnect, and discuss issues

This week, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) welcomed over 275 feed ingredient buyers and sellers from across the country to Orlando, Florida, for its annual Purchasing and Ingredient Suppliers Conference (PISC), postponed from March. The three-day program offered attendees the ability to reconnect with industry colleagues, make new connections, conduct business and engage in professional development.

'Since March 2020, our members have been solely focused on safely manufacturing animal food to keep the U.S. food and pet food supply chain stable amid many pandemic-induced challenges,' says AFIA's President and CEO Constance Cullman. 'Although our industry has adapted well to the new business environment, it thrives on personal relationships and we knew our members longed to reconnect with their industry colleagues in a professional forum. While we certainly missed those who could not be with us in-person this week, we heard from PISC attendees that they relished the time spent learning about the current market forces that could impact their businesses and networking with their industry colleagues.'

The event included two days' worth of educational programming, with a diverse lineup of speakers, including:

  • Temple Grandin, Ph.D., of Colorado State University, who challenged the industry to leverage the expertise and innovation from small players in agriculture to help the U.S. achieve its sustainability goals and address consumers' demands for locally produced products
  • Cassandra Jones, Ph.D., of Kansas State University, who discussed the ways the feed industry can mitigate the risk of spreading the African swine fever (ASF) virus via their manufacturing facilities to U.S. swine herds and the implications of the first ASF cases in the Dominican Republic on U.S. agriculture
  • Former U.S. ambassador Gregg Doud, of Aimpoint Research, who described how 'disrupters' in the marketplace can change the future trade environment for animal protein and dairy foods
  • Eric Mittenthal, of the North American Meat Institute, who spoke on changing consumer attitudes toward animal protein and plant-based foods
  • Richard Brock, of Brock Associates, Inc., and Joseph Kerns, of Partners for Production Agriculture, who provided expert economic analysis of the future grain and animal production markets
  • Kim Bremmer, of Ag Inspirations, who spoke on the need for agricultural companies to play an active role in their local and state civic organizations to correct misinformation
  • Lt. Colonel Dan Rooney, a fighter pilot and PGA professional, who spoke on how individuals can find purpose by following their dreams despite their fears of failure.

For the first time, the AFIA conducted a blood drive to assist in the nationwide blood shortage, collecting over a dozen units of blood with the potential to save 30 American lives.
