Study shows profitable return on investment for beef rearer with Orego-Stim

New beef research shows that 100 percent natural oregano essential oil (OEO) supplement, Orego-Stim, resulted in a five percent improvement in daily liveweight gain and an impressive ROI of 2.5:1.

A commercial study was undertaken with an Aberdeen Angus contract beef rearer for a renowned UK retailer. The aim was to evaluate the effect of oregano essential oil feed additive Orego-Stim from Anpario on the performance of growing Aberdeen Angus cross beef cattle.

'Orego-Stim can be seen to be an effective component of forage-based rations for supporting target weight gains in growing beef cattle,' says Laura Corbett, product technical manager at Anpario. 'Building good frame and maximising performance on grower forage-based rations will benefit costs of production in the longer term.'

A total of 140 housed steers, 260-280 days of age brought in at around 160kg and reared to around 450kg liveweight, were split into two groups. The control group were fed a forage-based basal total mixed ration (TMR) and the OEO supplemented group were fed the TMR with Orego-Stim included to provide 3g/head/day. The cattle were weighed every four-six weeks throughout the four-and-a-half month study period.

The addition of Orego-Stim to the ration resulted in a five percent improvement in daily liveweight gain and an additional 4.5kg of total liveweight gain throughout the study. The cattle fed rations supplemented with Orego-Stim had no notifiable health issues and the extra total liveweight gain resulted in more profit, with a return on investment of 2.5:1.

'With rising feed costs, it has become more important than ever for producers to ensure efficient feed conversion and improved growth rates,' adds Laura Corbett. 'This study demonstrates that Orego-Stim may be included in forage-based beef rations to support improved growth performance of beef cattle and provide a sustainable, natural tool to optimise producer profitability.'

Natural oregano oil sources have many well-documented properties, including antimicrobial, antioxidant and immunomodulatory functions. Orego-Stim, developed and manufactured by independent feed additive manufacturer Anpario, is a phytogenic feed additive formulated from a unique source of 100 percent natural oregano essential oil. The outcome of this commercial trial demonstrates how Orego-Stim can benefit growing cattle performance; by aiding ration palatability and intakes, supporting good animal health, and minimising the impact of any stress during rearing.

Cargill grants $10 million to World Food Program USA to combat the world’s growing hunger crisis

Cargill has made a $10 million grant to World Food Program USA in support of the United Nations World Food Programme's response to the global hunger crisis, escalated by the collateral impact of the Ukrainian war.

This generous grant, the largest donation ever made by Cargill to World Food Program USA, comes at a moment of unprecedented need as 345 million people face severe hunger and 50 million teeter on the brink of famine around the world. The grant will support the U.N. World Food Programme's emergency food assistance and resilience building initiatives, reaching millions of people in Ukraine and in hunger hot spots around the world.

'We thank Cargill for their transformational grant, which will help provide people in communities across the globe with lifesaving food and greater stability for the future,' says Barron Segar, World Food Program USA President and CEO. 'For more than 20 years, Cargill has been a steadfast partner that we can always count on, supporting school meals, small-scale farmers and disaster relief operations. Their support is a testament to the power of the private sector working together with us to address the root causes of hunger, while building resiliency.'

Disbursed in phases, the first half of Cargill's grant will focus on emergency operations, providing food and cash-based assistance to conflict-affected people in Ukraine as well as other countries facing escalating hunger due to the impact of the war in Ukraine. The second half of the grant will focus on bolstering food systems and targeting the root causes of hunger in global hotspots impacted by the disruption of Ukraine's exports.

'Cargill has a crucial role to play, addressing emergency hunger issues as well as long-term food security through our work across supply chains and through our corporate giving efforts. We know we can have more impact when we partner with organisations, like WFP, who are working to feed people around the globe every single day. This $10 million contribution reinforces Cargill's commitment to continuing our 20-year partnership with WFP,' says Pilar Cruz, Chief Sustainability Officer at Cargill and World Food Program USA Board of Directors member. 'Together, we will continue to work toward ending systemic hunger and ensure a safe, sustainable and affordable food system for all.'

The Ukraine crisis has triggered global price spikes in food, fuel and fertilisers that threaten to push countries around the world into famine. The result will be global destabilisation, starvation and mass migration on an unprecedented scale. Together with World Food Program USA, the U.N. World Food Programme is sounding the alarm, engaging private sector partners, and working to ensure action is taken to avert this looming catastrophe.

A Longstanding Partnership

This is just one of numerous examples of Cargill supporting the U.N. World Food Programme's tireless work to alleviate global hunger. Since 2001, Cargill has supported a range of the U.N. World Food Programme's programmatic priorities, including school meals, programs for smallholder farmers and disaster relief operations in Africa, Central America and Asia.

Recent impact snapshot:

2021: Cargill China launched a partnership with the U.N. World Food Programme to support the livelihoods of over 5,000 corn farmers in north-eastern China by 2023.

2020: While the world navigated the impacts of COVID-19, Cargill provided a grant to support school meal programs during the pandemic in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua as well as disaster relief efforts in these countries after the devastating hurricanes, Eta and Iota. Over 250,000 meals were served to over 29,000 people. Additionally, in honour of WFP's 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, Cargill made a match grant that has been supporting school meals and smallholder farmer programs in Central America planned to reach more 28,000 people.

2019: Cargill supported the scale-up of the national school feeding program (Pro-GAS) in Indonesia. To date this program has fed over 100,000 students.

2011: Cargill donated 10,000 metric tons of rice to help respond to famine in the Horn of Africa.

Cargill's work with the U.N. World Food Programme embodies its purpose of nourishing the world in a safe, responsible and sustainable way.

USSEC highlights sustainability, reliability, quality of U.S. soy to global audience during Soy Connext

The U.S. Soy Sustainability Assurance Protocol (SSAP) has earned Silver Level Equivalence when benchmarked with the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform(SAI Platform)'s Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) 3.0, a major takeaway from Soy Connext, the global soy summit hosted by the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC), with support from the soy checkoff.  After two days of expert speakers and connection building in San Diego, more than 600 buyers and sellers of U.S. Soy are leaving with a better understanding of the value and advantages delivered by the U.S. soybean industry.

Image credit: Chemi Ubani on Flickr
(CC BY 2.0)
'We're so glad to have had the opportunity to come together in person to strengthen relationships with U.S. Soy's international customers and industry partners,' says Jim Sutter, USSEC chief executive officer. 'During this year's forum we heard three recurring themes – we're in transformative and volatile times, supply chains continue to face challenges, and consumers are calling for reduced carbon footprints and increased transparency. Soy Connext provides an excellent forum to collaborate so companies can leverage U.S. Soy's superior quality, reliability, and sustainability in response to these challenges.'

The U.S. Soybean Sustainability Assurance Protocol (SSAP)'s aggregate approach was recently benchmarked with the SAI Platform's FSA. The SSAP provides verified sustainable soybean production on a national scale for U.S. soybean farmers. The benchmark eases the process for food and beverage sector to assess, improve and validate on-farm sustainability in their supply chains with U.S. Soy.

'This designation is important for international customers of U.S. Soy and holds the potential to expand markets, especially in Europe where demand for FSA designated soybeans is greater,' says Abby Rinne, sustainability director at USSEC.  'The biodiversity, conservation practices, health and welfare, and continuous improvements that U.S. Soy farmers demonstrate every season are the foundations of the SSAP and what helped U.S. Soy achieve verification. Food companies are looking for more ways to demonstrate the sustainability of their supply chains and U.S. Soy is committed to help them meet their customer and consumer expectations.'

The FSA Silver Level Equivalence designation is the latest third-party recognition of the sustainability of U.S. Soy. It joins the European Feed Manufacturers Organization (FEFAC), Global Seafood Alliance: Best Aquaculture Practices – Sustainable Feed, The Consumer Goods Forum, the Tokyo 2022 Olympics, and the UK Roundtable on Sustainable Soya, all of which have already positively benchmarked the SSAP.

"The benchmark of SSAP against the FSA recognises the excellent sustainability efforts that the program is making with regards to U.S. Soy. The benchmark also offers the opportunity for U.S.-based farmers to better reach international markets as the FSA is a globally accepted definition and framework of what on-farm sustainability looks like," says Joe Iveson, FSA Manager. The U.S. Soy differentiation is being recognized with SSAP verified exports up 33 percent compared to the same time period one year ago, and as of July 28, 2022, they make up 58 percent of total exports (approx. 64 MMT) for the current marketing year. Additionally, the Sustainable U.S. Soy label is featured on more than 850 product packs internationally.

Conference participants from 64 countries were in attendance for Soy Connext, learning of U.S. Soy's status of providing superior quality and having the lowest carbon footprint versus soy of other origins. Teams from 38 countries are expanding their U.S. Soy experience and education through industry tours focused on soybean farms and export operations across the United States.

AFIA releases State of the U.S. Feed industry report

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) released its annual, 'Our Industry, Our Promise,' report today, detailing the challenges the U.S. feed and pet food industry faced over the past year and the steps the AFIA took to address member priorities. The report provides an overview of this unique industry segment's impact on the U.S. economy, its efforts to promote animal food safety and worker health and safety, and its forward-thinking initiatives to enhance global competitiveness and industry environmental sustainability programs.

'Global, and sometimes unexpected, turmoil continued throughout 2021 and into 2022, but through it all, our industry stayed strong, worked together and formed new partnerships along the journey,' says AFIA President and Chief Executive Officer Constance Cullman. 'The AFIA serves as a means to speak with one industry voice about global supply chain challenges, the need for regulatory modernisation and the importance of championing the innovative solutions that will allow us all to thrive.'

The report, which concentrates on work completed during AFIA's fiscal year from May 1, 2021, through April 30, 2022, discusses the:

  • Business climate for U.S. animal food manufacturers, including how they are managing problems with shipping delays and maintaining a stable workforce;
  • State issues that would lead to a hodgepodge of state regulations and/or costly mandates not associated with the regulatory review of state feed products;
  • Management of animal food safety and animal health risks, including the return to in-person, routine regulatory reviews and improvements in mitigating disease threats to U.S. farms;
  • Work to maintain U.S. competitiveness amid global pressures, including the industry's response to the Russia-Ukraine war and efforts to remove regulatory hurdles slowing the approval of new feed ingredients or that could stymie trade of animal food-based products;
  • Priorities for U.S. agricultural trade policy, including identifying areas where the Biden administration should focus, such as increasing market access in China, Vietnam and Brazil; and
  • Industry's stance in international dialogues, to ensure these fora prioritise science and innovation and do not unnecessarily restrict consumer diet choices.

'The U.S. Congress and administration took notice when farmers, ranchers, agribusiness and environmental groups joined us in calling for much-needed regulatory improvements and modern trade policies to ensure they are not left behind as other countries move forward with new feed technologies,' Ms Cullman says. 'The United Nations took notice when the U.S. food and agriculture supply chain was joined by its counterparts around the world in calling for a positive dialogue about sustainable agriculture production, one that discussed real solutions and challenges and valued innovation, instead of one that looked to undo years of scientific progress.'

The report also provides an update on AFIA's educational offerings over the past year, recognises several industry award winners and acknowledges the ways the AFIA has given back to local communities.

Promoting U.S. wheat around the world

As U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) President Vince Peterson often says, at any given hour of the day there is someone, somewhere, talking about the quality, reliability and value of U.S. wheat. Here are just some of the ways USW was working in June and July to promote all six classes of U.S. wheat in an ever more complex world grain market.

USW Beijing Builds Online Resources
Pandemic restrictions to movement and gatherings continue in the People's Republic of China and have compelled a greater reliance on remote delivery systems. USW Beijing now offers a suite of regular programming made up of translations from the USW Price Report, Crop Updates and monthly Supply and Demand presentations. By adapting as many materials as possible to deliver remotely or online, USW Beijing is able to keep USW technical support, trade service, and U.S. wheat quality information flowing to China's flour millers.

USW Seoul Sent Noodle Makers to Wheat Marketing Centre
In June, USW Seoul conducted a Noodle Flour Development Short Course with the expert staff at the Wheat Marketing Center (WMC) in Portland, Oregon. The team included noodle processors and milling quality specialists from Korea. They made 34 distinct types of general ramen and non-fried ramen noodles using various blends of U.S. wheat and Australian wheat flour. As a result of the general ramen test, these customers concluded that U.S. flour could be increased in a blend with Australian flour and maintain acceptable appearance and texture. In addition, the course participants identified that adding U.S. hard red spring (HRS) flour improved the hardness of stir-type noodles.

USW Mexico City Technical Support
USW Mexico City Director of Technical Services Marcelo Mitre and consultant Juan Manuel Tiznado conducted a cookie seminar in June for processing staff at a large Mexican manufacturing plant. The seminar helped demonstrate improvements in processing and end-product quality, including improved outcomes using U.S. soft red winter (SRW) and soft white (SW) wheat flour. Mitre and Tiznado identified several modifications, and they will continue working with the manufacturer to monitor progress and the customer's satisfaction with those improvements.

Chung and Goh Teach Baking
In July, USW Singapore held the 42nd Baking Science and Technology Course (BSTC) in conjunction with the UFM Baking and Cooking School in Bangkok, Thailand. Noted USW Bakery Consultant Roy Chung and USW Biscuit/Bakery and Noodle Technologist Ivan Goh were the principal lecturers. This six-week course features ingredient functionality, bread and cake processing, and sections on flour specification and quality evaluation. USW Manila Baking Technician Ady Redondo participated in the course and received the second highest overall score among 19 students. Those participants now understand more about how U.S. wheat classes provide superior functionality for the most popular wheat-based foods in their markets.

USW Santiago Brings U.S. Harvest to Customers
A benefit to both USW and its customers from pandemic travel restrictions is the ability to reach a lot more customers in a single online activity. In June, USW Santiago was able to share a detailed, up-to-date look at the 2022/23 U.S. hard red winter (HRW) and SRW crops then being harvested to 138 customers from 85 different companies in the South American region. Justin Gilpin, CEO, Kansas Wheat Commission reported on the progress and quality of the HRW crop while wheat farmer and a past USW Chairman Jason Scott representing the Maryland Grain Producers Utilization Board gave the SRW update. USW Santiago reports that there was active participation in the question-and-answer session and that those customers now have added confidence that these crops will offer excellent flour and functional characteristics.

These are just a few of the ways that U.S. Wheat Associates, the industry's export market development organisation, works with wheat buyers, millers, bakers, food processors and government officials in more than 100 countries around the world to promote the reliability, quality and value of all six U.S. wheat classes.

Alapala has started Cobot investments

Alapala Group, already having robotic technologies in welding, bending and different fields for many years, has commissioned the first cobot in the manufacturing plant.

Equipped with artificial intelligence based technologies, Cobots (collaborative robots), are distinguished from traditional industrial robots with their ability of working with people safely and in close proximity in the same environment.

Alapala manufacturing plant has been equipped with advanced production technologies including robotic welding, bending, and automated painting systems. Being the first collaborative robot at the manufacturing plant, the new cobot started its operation in June 2022.

The cobot has 12 different sensors which perceives any close interaction, enabling the cobot to work with employees at the same working environment. Operator's safety is also assured by 'Power and Force Limit' technology that stops the cobot in case of any possible contact with employees. The six axis movement ability of the cobot also provides a very high precision and conformity for a wide variety of applications.

General Manager of Alapala Machinery Inc., Mr Gorkem Suner declared that this was the first developed cobot project in the plant, and will be followed by other cobot installations soon to be adapted for different duties in production.
