Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) Gran-U-Lizer™

To meet the growing demand of Superabsorbent Polymers (SAP) worldwide, Modern Process Equipment Corporation (MPE) features their Model 1060 Gran-U-Lizer. The 1060 is a sophisticated unit that is specifically designed for grinding SAP with precise particle uniformity at the 20 x 100 US Mesh (850 x 150 μm) size range and 30 x 100 Mesh (600 x 150 μm) with minimal “fines” (dust or bi-products), thereby improving process efficiencies throughout the grinding process.

One unique feature is the BAVA (Balance and Vibration Analysis) system that senses when product moisture levels elevate beyond the tolerable range. When this occurs, the product becomes elastic and does not grind efficiently. BAVA senses the material elasticity change and immediately notifies plant personnel. Another benefit of the BAVA system is the ability to predict bearing failures before they occur, further increasing operating efficiencies.

Course: IAOM-KSU Introduction to Flour Milling

International Grains Program to hold annual flour milling course.

For the fifth time, the IAOM-KSU Introduction to Flour Milling course will be held at the International Grains Program Conference Center at Kansas State University from Jan. 14-18, 2013. Co-sponsored by the International Association of Operative Millers, IGP is excited to continue expanding the opportunities within the annual flour milling curriculum.

This course attracts a broad range of individuals to the program, says Mark Fowler, IGP associate director and milling specialist.

“This course was one of the more diverse in regard to their job responsibilities. We had shift millers, miller assistants, quality assurance managers, general managers, technical service managers,” says Fowler. “The common thread for most of these participants is that they are new to the industry. “

Course participants will hear presentations from industry professionals, experience hands-on workshops and a high level of interaction between other participants and the professionals. Fowler along with Dan Wells, milling engineer and adjunct faculty from Salina, Kan., will be teaching most of the course. John Coombs, a second shift miller with Wilkins-Rogers Mills from Martinsburg, W.V. and a graduate of the 2012 course, appreciated the professionalism and the up to date knowledge of the technology that these instructors brought to the table.

“I felt like I have a good handle on the basics, but to work alongside others helping each other is an experience that will help me improve at my own job,” Coombs says. “I work primarily with soft wheat in West Virginia, so it was really interesting to learn about hard wheat and to have that experience open up questions and ideas about what our standard for quality is.”

Coombs says he was impressed with the knowledge he obtained from attending the course and is already making plans to return for other IGP training opportunities.

“In this industry its competitive, so what you can do to sharpen your quality keeps you on top. A lot can change in an industry in a year’s time, so I plan on coming back for another course,” Coombs says.

For more information or to register for this course, go to the IGP website. This is just one example of the many partnership trainings offered through IGP. In addition to grain marketing and risk management, IGP offers trainings in the areas of flour milling and grain processing, and feed manufacturing and grain management.

Friedrich electronic: It’s all in the mix

The choice of suitable dosing machines for blending applications can be determining for the product quality as well as the smooth operation of the process. Friedrich electronic are facing this challenge with their Flow Controller FC3.

In many companies of the worldwide bulk processing industries the possibilities of flow regulation at the silo discharge often remain underestimated. There are still manual sliders in operation, set to optimum dosing performance via markings. This may be quite useful with some of these applications. In other places, older types of volumetric dosing units are still in operation. However, before exchanging manual or older units or designing new plants, one should be aware of the huge possibilities modern systems can offer.

The operation of volumetric dosing units may in some cases cause malfunctions or inaccuracies. It demands interventions of skilled personnel in case the bulk density changes. The same problem occurs, if the blending ratio is to be changed; the operator has to estimate the performance and to adjust the machines accordingly afterwards.
By installing a Friedrich electronic FC3 Flow Controller, the blending efficiency of most plants can be improved.

Blocking or running dry of the silos remain partly realised with an immense time delay, or they demand extremely sensitive notification systems in order to avoid that. An effective process monitoring including visualised material flows, which is today’s state-of-the-art, is unfortunately impossible in those cases.

For all that, especially in the bulk processing industries the accurate mixture of components e. g. cereals or legumes is most important, as it is determining for the quality and at least for the success of the product.

Although some of these shortcomings do not occur using volumetric dosing units, which offer more exact dosing compared to manual sliders, it remains volumetric. Therefore, effective process control including blocking and running dry prevention is not reached. Parameter adjustments have to be made manually, while remote control and proper process monitoring are still impossible.

A further alternative is the usage of dosing screws. In that case, process manipulation by means of remote controlling is possible, and the performance can be adjusted via rotation speed. Nevertheless, even this method is volumetric and holds the danger of inaccuracies, rarely bearing a relation to the high investments as well as installation and maintenance efforts. The general problem with blocking and running dry can also not be solved using a dosing screw without any additional sensor technology.

Having to cope with these kinds of problems with the production of blendings was decisive for the development of Flow Controller FC3 at Friedrich electronic.

The result is a dosing system developed on the basis of many years of experience, allowing for intelligent, accurate blending of various products. Moreover, it offers the possibility of exact performance adjustment and quantity balancing.

The system is designed with a pneumatic flat slide at the inlet and a specially embedded baffle sensor, regulating the flow capacity in t/h according to the desired value and weighing the product in kg. Meanwhile, the process is monitored and constantly checked for malfunctions. If blockings or bridgings occur above the unit, the flat slide automatically opens up more widely until the problem is solved or - if the problem remains - individually triggers an alarm. Therefore, once the process control is programmed the monitoring and malfunction detection is greatly facilitated. The electric slide control also provides automatic and zero-taring as well as checking of plausibility regarding slide position and weighing signal.
Thanks to its low housing, the FC3 Flow Controller can be retrofitted in many production processes.

If necessary, the operation personnel may intervene quickly and effectively in the process via interface to make adjustments or to analyse the collected data. With these features a very high level of integration is reached, providing both maximum process safety and product quality - and offering valuable data on the process itself.

Thanks to its very low housing, most of the production processes can even be retrofitted with Flow Controller FC3 in order to increase the plant efficiency. The only precondition for a successful installation is a product reservoir of a free-flowing product above the machine. That is why in most cases the controller is installed directly underneath the silo discharges.

Event: Alltech Poultry Seminar

With high feed costs, increased government regulations and consumer demands intensifying, the future of the poultry industry is difficult to predict. This was the focus of Alltech’s 10th Poultry Solutions Seminar, held in Hannover, Germany on November 12, 2012, where a number of distinguished poultry industry experts gave presentations on their cutting edge research and on the issues that they believe will be of most importance.

Antibiotic resistance is getting more and more publicity and governments are starting  to take notice. Dr. Marcel Boereboom, of the Royal Dutch Society for Veterinary Medicine, discussed the impact this is having on the Dutch industry, following a study by the Dutch Health Council. He described how the government of the Netherlands have, to date, banned certain antibiotics and implemented a targeted reduction of 50 percent (of 2009 levels) of the total amount of antibiotics used in food producing animals by 2013. This has had a huge impact on how poultry is produced.

Focussing on how to deal with this issue was Professor Stephen Collett from the University of Georgia. He recommended a shift in emphasis in gut health management, from working against pathogens, to working with the intestinal microbial community. This involves improving performance by accelerating the evolution and maintaining the stability of favourable intestinal microbiota. The three most important areas of an effective intestinal health management programme include: “seeding” the gut with favourable organisms, “feeding” the favourable organisms and “weeding” out the unfavourable organisms.

Professor Roselina Angel, of the University of Maryland, described to attendees at the Poultry Solutions Seminar research on how neonatal conditioning, resulting in epigenetic changes shows great promise in terms of improving phosphorus (P) utilisation. “By applying a moderate P deficiency in young chicks, the bird is conditioned to utilise P more efficiently throughout its life. The timing of the conditioning is critical and requires a clear understanding of skeletal growth, the main driver of calcium (Ca) and P requirements,” she explained.

Controlling campylobacter, a bacteria that poses no danger to poultry, but is the leading cause of human bacterial gastroenteritis, was the topic of Professor Frank Pasmans’ presentation, researched at Ghent University. When a single bird is infected, the infection spreads quickly through the flock, resulting in the majority of birds being colonised within only a few days after Campylobacter entry.

He explained how, overall, the outlook is bleak if the flock has been infected but results of recent studies, using oral administration of bovine or chicken immunoglobulins of hyper-immunised animals and the use of bacteriocins to limit caecal colonisation, look promising. “We are still quite a way from commercialised products but the future does seem to be positive,” he explained.

To deal with unpredictable feed costs and an inconsistent supply, Professor David Roland of Auburn University,  recommends his “econometric approach to the feeding of layers. “Feeding correctly is challenging because nutrient requirements and dietary levels needed for optimal returns are continually changing” said Prof. Roland as he opened his talk.

He presented his calculation tool called Econometrics to attendees, demonstrating how optimal econometric feeding can improve performance, returns and help regulate feed and egg prices at the same time.

"India is a unique and diverse country. The common factor is that the milling industry across this country is developing rapidly despite a challenged economy," says Mr Roger Gilbert of Perendale Publishers.

"India is proving to be a foil for China and offers companies an opportunity the explore a production system that supplies a 1.22 billion people with their food needs - that's 16 percent of the world's population," he adds.

India is the fourth largest economy in the world with a GDP of eight percent and while there is a growing middle class, the overall per capita income is still just US$1000. Analysts expect it to rise to the third largest economy by 2035, growing to 60 percent of the size of the American economy by that time.

In addition, India is the world's second largest producer of wheat and rice and exports some two million tonnes to Africa, neighbouring countries such as Nepal and Bangladesh and then further afield to Africa and others. Per ha output of cereals and oilseeds in India continues to climb, yet still ranks between 30-60 percent of the best yields achieved in developing countries.

International visitors and speakers from the USA can expect to pay approximately US$1200 return via Mumbai and should allow a week to make the return journey leaving on February 5 and returning on February 10, 2013. Kayak.com is a good source of flight information - while two or three percent more expensive than the cheapest, they have proven reliable in our experience. The conference hotel is the five star Vivanta by Taj - Connemara Chennai and costs Rs.5300/single room (US$94) and Rs.5800/double room (US$106). These rates include breakfast and taxes.
