20/05/2015: Rice the core of Thai culture and economy

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn had “divine grace” towards the Thai people in the development of rice cultivations and improving the quality of life for rice farmers throughout the Kingdom of Thailand.

Those were the first remarks made during the opening of the Thailand Rice Convention 2015 which had been organised to honour HRH Sidrindhorn with the theme ‘Think Rice - Think Thailand: Serving the best quality rice to the world’, said General Chatchai Sarikalys, the Minister of Commerce in Thailand, when he introduced delegates to this year’s seventh Thailand Rice Convention 2015 in Bangkok today.

"Rice has long been tied to the lifestyle and culture of Thai people, from the distant past to the present, because not only is rice nice - the staple food of the Thai people, but because it is also the core and potential export product generating revenue and bringing hundreds of billions of Thai bath back into the country each year,” he said.

General Chatchai Sarikalys the Minister of Commerce in Thailand, which is hosting the event made his introductory remarks below before introducing the Prime Minister of Thailand, General Prayut Chan-O-Vha, to officially opened the event in the presence of 500-plus delegates.

Rice has made Thailand a leading manufacturer and exporter of quality products entering the global market, he said.

This Convention should provide an opportunity and platform for those engaged in the global rice trade to have a chance to meet, he added.

“Exchanging view and helpful opinions as well as updating each other on the current innovations and developments in various aspects of the trade."

In addition he said this week provided the opportunity for rice exporters and importers from partner countries in all regions around the world “to tighten up the good relationships among them.”

2015 is an auspicious year as it corresponds to the occasion of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirinthorn’s 60th birthday anniversary, General Chatchai Sarikalys added.

Farmers together with rice production representatives and rice traders from around the world were able to visit the rice ‘exhibition’ staged in honour of HRH Sirinthorn that highlighted the unique features of Thai rice namely nutrition, organic, their wide varieties, developments and values that meet the needs of modern consumers who have become health conscious, he added.
