Mykola Solsky met with the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye

During the working visit of the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine to the Republic of Türkiye, Mykola Solskyi met with the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye Vahit Kirisci.

During the meeting, the parties discussed prospects and potential directions for increasing Ukraine's grain export volumes, as well as the possibility of joint implementation of irrigation projects in the south of Ukraine.

"Restoration and development of irrigation is one of the priorities in the development of agriculture in Ukraine, and Türkiye today has a complete technological cycle - from design to construction and modernization of irrigation systems," says Mr Solskyi. He added that the implementation of serious projects will begin in full only after the end of the war, but the provision of preparatory works should begin now.


The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye expressed his support for Ukraine and assured that Türkiye has high hopes for the recently signed Agreement on the safe transportation of grain and food products from Ukrainian ports, as well as the establishment of the corresponding Coordination Center in Istanbul, as it is directly related to the provision world food security.

Mr Solsky thanked the Turkish people and the Turkish government for supporting Ukraine since the first day of the war.

 "A major achievement of this support is the signed grain agreement, which will allow the export of grain from Ukraine through three Ukrainian ports. Türkiye's role in signing this document is significant," he emphasises.

A third of the rapeseed area in Ukraine has already been harvested

Harvesting in Ukraine continues and is gaining momentum, Dnipropetrovsk Mykolaiv and Odesa regions have each collected more than a million tons of grain of the new crop. More than 59 percent of the area has been threshed for peas, and a third for rapeseed.

According to operational data from the regions, harvesting of early grain and leguminous crops was carried out on an area of ​​2.1 million hectares (18%), 6.5 million tons of new crop grain were threshed, including:

  • 1.2 million hectares of wheat were threshed, 3.8 million tons were threshed
  • 811.4 thousand ha were threshed with barley, 2.5 million tons were threshed
  • 75 thousand hectares of peas were threshed, 126.8 thousand tons were threshed

In addition, farmers of all regions are harvesting winter rapeseed, which has been threshed on an area of ​​400,000 hectares, (33%) threshed 896,400 tons of seeds with a yield of 22.4 tons/ha.

Andritz appoints Marco Baumann as VP Business Unit Capital

Andritz Feed & Biofuel has announced the appointment of Marco Baumann as Vice President Unit Capital effective this month. Mr Baumann was previously Animal Feed Industry Director within the company where he was instrumental in establishing Andritz as a strategic partner for plant solutions for feed producers internationally.

European processor adds three more SORTEX H SpectraVision machines to its oat mills

Belgium-based Maselis NV added a further three SORTEX H SpectraVision optical sorters to its oat mills following an initial investment in one machine at the start of the year. After attending Bühler's Networking Days 2022 (NWD) event, the customer was convinced to further strengthen its relationship with Bühler SORTEX by investing in more sorters.

From June 27-28, over 1,000 decision makers, partners, and start-ups gathered in Uzwil, Switzerland for Bühler's Networking Days 2022 event. Current food trends were discussed in depth, including the recent increase in trials around alternative protein ingredients. One grain with a significantly high protein value is oats, which Belgium-based company Maselis NV is renowned for processing.

Extending the oat mills
Maselis has been a major European producer of cereal products for almost two centuries, since 1829. The company's oat mills have a husking plant, several flaking lines, and a cereal extrusion department where oat flakes, breakfast cereal flakes, pre-cooked pearled wheat, and extruded cereals are produced.

Since the start of the year, Maselis has been using Bühler's latest SORTEX H SpectraVision machine, with five chutes, in its oat processing operations. The SORTEX H offers three key benefits for customers – unmatched ease of use, high performance, and enhanced connectivity – all of which contribute to increased sustainability.

Josh Miller elected U.S. Grains Council Chairman during annual summer meeting

The delegates of the U.S. Grains Council (USGC), elected Josh Miller, a farmer from Indiana representing the Indiana Corn Marketing Council, as chairman of its Board of Directors at its 62nd Annual Board of Delegates Meeting held in Sacramento, California.

'It is important to me to learn as much as I possibly can – not just about how to do the best job I can on the farm, but also to learn as much as I can about how what I do affects the world as a whole – how my efforts create global ripple effects that help sustain those who need what I grow the most,' Mr Miller said during his incoming remarks on Wednesday.

Mr Miller is a fifth-generation farmer from Anderson, Indiana, and produces corn and soybeans, primarily as a 100 percent no-till row crop operation. He is a member of the Indiana Corn Marketing Council and was elected to the Council's officer rotation in 2019. Previously, Mr Miller was a finance officer for Lockheed Martin, a contract officer for the U.S. government and a United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant. He has been awarded the Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the 2018 River Friendly Farmer Award.

In addition to Mr Miller, the delegates elected Verity Ulibarri of the United Sorghum Checkoff Program as secretary-treasurer. Gail Lierer of the Ohio Corn Marketing Program and Curt Mether and Mark Mueller of the Iowa Corn Growers Association were also elected as at-large directors.

New research demonstrates that Orego-Stim effectively supports broiler performance during coccidial challenge

Dr Matthew Jones, director of nutrition and veterinarian at the Southern Poultry Research Group (SPRG) has presented results of a trial at the 2022 Annual Poultry Science Association Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The work is titled 'Evaluation of a Phytogenic Compound, Orego-Stim, in Broiler Chickens During Eimeria maxima Challenge'.

The results reported that Orego-Stim supplementation in broilers infected with Eimeria maximahelped to mitigate the severe effects of coccidia cycling. Dr Jones has a PhD in poultry science and a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Georgia, 'Eimeria maxima is one of the three primary coccidia affecting broilers and is one of the most frequent causes of intestinal damage resulting in Necrotic Enteritis,' Dr Jones explains.

Broilers fed diets with Orego-Stim included had a significantly greater body weight gain and a numerically improved feed conversion ratio at 21 days of age compared to infected control birds. In addition, later cycling of coccidia was numerically lower in groups supplemented with the natural phytogenic, Orego-Stim.

'It is often this late cycling of coccidia that has the most negative impact on broiler performance,' explains Dr Jones. 'Whilst there is no question that early health issues can result in a lingering influence on performance, broilers have a tremendous capacity to compensate from such challenges and attain growth very close to breed standards. Later intestinal challenges though can have a far greater economic impact.'

'This is because there is not the opportunity for compensational growth, and mortality near the end of production is related to far greater losses for the producer due to the feed and energy costs associated with raising these birds,' says Dr Jones.

In the trial, 450 day-old male Ross chicks were assigned to one of five groups (Negative control, Challenge control, Orego-Stim: 600 g/t, Orego-Stim: 800 g/t and Orego-Stim: 1000g/t). On day eight, all birds except the negative control were individually challenged via oral gavage with E. maxima (75,000 oocysts per bird at 1ml dose per bird). Body weight gain, intestinal lesion scores, oocyst count and mortality were recorded until 28 days of age.

'At all inclusion rates, Orego-Stim was effective at supporting bird performance,' explains Dr Jones. "Commercial poultry producers will have a coccidiosis programme in place and this maybe a coccidiosis vaccine, a chemical, an ionophore or a combination of these. Natural alternatives, such as Orego-Stim, gives producers options to integrate these into their systems to take pressure off these traditional interventions."

'Orego-Stim is a natural solution which has potential for use within existing rotation or bioshuttle coccidiosis control programmes, as well as in programmes where late breaking coccidiosis is suspected,' Dr Jones concludes.

Natural oregano oil sources have many well-documented properties, including antimicrobial, antioxidant and immunomodulatory functions. Orego-Stim, developed and manufactured by independent feed additive manufacturer Anpario, is a phytogenic feed additive formulated from a unique source of 100 percent natural oregano essential oil. It has been extensively researched and trialled in controlled challenge models and has been shown to successfully support broiler performance during coccidiosis challenge. It is available as both a liquid and powder, enabling flexibility in application for producers.

Council’s summer meeting continues, focused on global trade successes

The second day of the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) 62nd Annual Board of Delegates meeting in Sacramento, California, highlighted Council program successes, offered insight into the coming Farm Bill and began a refresh of the Council's strategic plan.

During the morning general session, USGC Vice President, Cary Sifferath gave an around-the-world update on Council activities in markets in which the Council has a presence. 

'The Council has done a great job of establishing connections and relationships with industries and governments abroad,' Mr Sifferath said. 'As the industries have changed their focus, the Council continues to adapt with them on behalf of developing markets, enabling trade and improving lives.'

Following Mr Sifferath, attendees heard from selected directors and managers who shared Council success stories from around the globe. 

Emily Byron, USGC director of global programs, shared China's sorghum purchases and Indonesia's purchases of DDGS for the poultry industry. USGC manager of global ethanol market development, Stella Qian, discussed the United Kingdom's move to implement E10 ethanol standard to develop a net zero transportation sector. Katy Wyatt, USGC manager of global strategies reviewed how sorghum and DDGS feeding trials in Africa are changing the feed industries there. USGC marketing director for the Latin America region, Ana Ballesteros, shared how implementing an extensive manufacturing training course has led to the modernization of Columbia's feed industry. Sadie Marks, USGC manager of global programs, discussed how the Council's work with a major Mexican brewer has increased barley sales and encouraged future growth.

The morning session also featured National Corn Growers Association CEO, Jon Doggett, who discussed the outlook for the coming Farm Bill that houses the Market Access Program (MAP) and the Foreign Market Development Program (FMD), both of which help fund the Council's work overseas.

In the afternoon, led by USGC Director of Strategic Initiatives and Engagement Melissa Kessler, attendees began work on USGC's strategic plan, a guiding document that helps direct the Council's actions over the next few years. Attendees discussed the priorities of each stakeholder group and how the plan should evolve over time.

The organisation also held member sessions including agribusiness, general farm organisations, barley, corn and sorghum sectors that took up issues of importance about the commodities the Council represents. 

The meeting concludes tomorrow with attendees participating in the Board of Delegates meeting where they will elect USGC officers and Advisory Team (A-Team) and sector leaders will offer their recommendations and reports regarding the future direction of the Council.

Spain, a target market for Symaga

Exporting more than 90 percent of production is SYMAGA's DNA. Since its beginnings, there has been an eagerness to export, which in a few years has materialised in figures that are growing steadily to reach 96 percent. However, the SYMAGA brand in Spain has a low recognition within the borders. 

With the new millennium, big projects started in the country, the first one in the year 2000 from Cooperativa La Encina, in Palazuelo, who asked us for 6 SBH1223/14 silos for cereal storage and an extension a few months later. In 2001, we supplied Bühler with 58,188m3 for Abengoa's bioethanol plant project in A Coruña. Seville will be the next location for Intermalta's malting plant. In 2016, Maltería La Moravia entrusted SYMAGA with the manufacture of six 1298/19 silos, and in the same year, 35 kilometers from their factory, silos were supplied for the manchega alcohol plant Alvinesa.

In the last two years, the Spanish market began to increase the number of m3 of storage manufactured by SYMAGA, with the following projects standing out: Estrella Galicia entrusts SYAMAGA with the supply of eight hopper silos to expand the brewery in A Coruña. Iberoquinoa's new plant in Antequera will have four hopper silos SCEX1070/13T45EC and Cincaporc expands its feed factory in Fraga. A few kilometers from their factory, the assembly of 22 hopper silos for the Inalsa feed factory in Ciudad Real has been completed. A few months ago orders were confirmed from DCOOP for the silos that will store the almonds in the processing plants in Cordoba and Portugal. Their flagship project in Spain in recent years is Panificadora Conquense with the assembly of 25 hopper silos for the new mill. This inertia in the Spanish market will continue in 2022 with the projects for Legumbres Pedro and Jusegal.

The goal is to maintain the growing trend in the domestic market, in order to consolidate their position in the country where SYMAGA has its origins, without forgetting the maintenance of consolidated sales areas and the conquest of new countries. The strategy of coexistence of export and international presence with the national one will enhance the recognition of their brand inside and outside their borders.

BDC Systems and d.m.i. Mechanical Engineers collaborate on grain processing plant

BDC Systems, working closely with d.m.i. Mechnical Engineers – which is now part of McArthur Agriculture – have helped Alistair Robertson, who farms a large arable unit which includes winter wheat, oil seed rape and winter barley at Bonnington Mains Farms, to finish last year's harvest in record time.

"Our drier was nearing the end of its life, unable to cope with an increase in capacity and was part of an outdated system," explains Mr Robertson.

"We had to handle grain several times before it went into store or on to the lorry to be sold. We were tipping wet grain at other sites, then bringing it to the drier and then taking it from the drier to other sheds. All of which was extremely time consuming and an expensive use of labour."

Mr Robertson approached BDC Systems, John Wilson and d.m.i.'s George Brown to design and develop a new grain processing plant, which Mr Robertson calls "bang-on".

"BDC and d.m.i. have delivered a new processing plant that 'bang-on' delivers what we needed and it was up and running for harvest 2021," he says.

Once designs were approved the new plant was constructed by Thorburn Group directed by Alistair Thorburn, with required electrics handled by John Noble of Bonnyrigg, both trusted members of the team involved in constructing the new plant.

Grain now enters the plant via a 14m Skandia I-line 60tph trench intake, where it is then transferred to an Aagaard Aspirator pre-cleaner before moving to a Zanin rotary cleaning. Trash and screenings are transferred to a dust house.

After being cleaned, the grain is transported to and from a Svegma continuous flow drier which is fitted with a turbo cleans dust extraction system, via three Skandia I-Line belt and bucket elevators, and five Skandia I-Line chain and flight conveyors.

The plant has been designed so that there are several options as to how the grain is handled, for example the grain can bypass the rotary cleaner and go straight to the drier, or go directly from the pre-cleaner to the store.

Owing to the wet harvest conditions in Scotland, Mr Robertson has installed BDC Systems' Moisture Monitoring System (MMS) to ensure the moisture content of grain as it goes into and out of the Svegma drier is continuously monitored. The MMS sits on the wet grain intake elevator where a grain sample is taken before it enters the drier, and another is taken as the grain exits the drier.

The entire plant is controlled by a BDC Systems PLC control panel, the plant can be controlled remotely via a smartphone or tablet so nobody needs to be at the plant continuously. The MMS can be pre-configured to send text or email alerts in the case that the moisture content falls above or below predefined maximum and minimum levels, so the necessary adjustments can be made remotely and restore it to required levels.

Being able to adjust grain drier settings remotely means it is optimised to maintain the correct moisture content and reduces rising energy costs.

"Despite last year being a bit of a learning curve around the new plant, harvest was easier, quicker, more productive and efficient, handling increased capacity we shaved one week off the time it would previously have taken us," comments Mr Robertson. "Last harvest was fairly dry but I can see how the new plant will be of huge benefit to us when the weather is wet."

Signatures for the grain corridor were signed in Istanbul

The parties came together in Istanbul to sign the necessary agreement on the solution of the grain crisis that started with the Russia-Ukraine war. President Erdoğan of the Republic of Türkiye and Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, also attended the ceremony of the 'Grain Shipment Agreement' signed between Russia and Ukraine.

At the signing ceremony hosted by Türkiye, the Secretary-General of the United Nations said, "With this agreement, they will open a new windpipe in many parts of the world."

The agreement was signed by the Minister of National Defense of Türkiye Mr. Akar, Minister of Defense of Russia Mr. Shoigu and Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Mr. Kubrakov.

President Erdoğan made the following comment on the subject, 'With this agreement, we will contribute together to prevent the danger of hunger that awaits billions of people all over the world, from Africa to the Middle East, from America to Asia. Providing world supply security in agriculture and food products is important in many respects. With this step, possible additional price increases due to the loss of productivity caused by the heat wave and drought will be prevented. It will help control food inflation, which has become a global problem. I would like to thank Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelensky for their leadership," he said.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, United Nations Secretary-General Guterres said, 'Today there is a ray of hope in the Black Sea. It comes when the world needs it most. I want to thank all the parties who are making this happen right now.'

Mr Guterres, who thanked President Erdogan for his persistent follow-up, continued his words as follows, 'This agreement is actually being signed for the world. The deficit in the global food web will be reduced, and food prices will fall. The world needs this for the solution of the global world food crisis and Türkiye has a critical importance here. We are here today to ensure the passage in the Black Sea. I think that at the point where both sides entered into this bloody conflict, it should come to an end. This light of hope in the Black Sea is very bright, may this light of hope help people come to an end to the problems they suffer.'

The control of the shipments will be made from the coordination centre to be established jointly in Istanbul, and the work is expected to start as soon as possible.

EFSA’s African swine fever campaign extended for the third year

The campaign 'Stop African swine fever' has been extended for the third consecutive year. It is run in partnership with local authorities in eighteen countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia.

'The spread of African swine fever continues at an alarming rate, with recent outbreaks in Italy and two sporadic outbreaks in Germany, close to the borders of France and the Netherlands respectively. African swine fever is not confined to wild boar in Eastern and Central Europe. It is a global issue that poses a significant threat to pigs, farmers and the pork industry and needs to be tackled by all of us together,' says EFSA's Executive Director, Bernhard Url.

'Empowering stakeholders and economic actors through information is of paramount importance to stop the spread of African swine fever on the continent. Thanks to strong actions on the ground, coupled with ongoing information campaigns, the EU has managed to eradicate ASF in a number of countries in recent years, namely Czechia and Belgium. However, we must not lower our guard as new outbreaks are reported regularly,' says DG SANTE's Director for Crisis preparedness in food, animals and plant, Bernard Van Goethem.

The campaign will address farmers, veterinarians, and hunters. With the assistance of local farmers' groups, veterinary organisations, hunting associations, and other relevant bodies, the campaign aims to raise awareness about how to prevent the spread of ASF.

This initiative is part of ongoing efforts by EFSA, the European Commission and other international bodies to halt the spread of ASF in the EU and neighbouring countries.

David Chester promoted to buyer/planner for Brock Grain Systems

David Chester has been promoted to Buyer/Planner for Brock Grain Systems, according to Cary Carter, Vice President of Supply Chain and Operational Excellence for the CTB, Inc. Frankfort, Indiana facility. Mr Chester's new responsibilities include researching, sourcing, and evaluating vendors as well as managing the inventory levels and accuracy to ensure company goals and customer ordering timelines are met.

A CTB employee since 2014, Mr Chester recently held the position of Warehouse Lead where he monitored the day-to-day activities of the warehouse including organising the shipment of customer orders in a timely manner and transferring parts from the warehouse to the plant for use on assembling Brock's variety of dryers. He also designed safety measures and trained new employees.

Prior to his employment with CTB, Mr Chester gained six months of experience in the automotive industry as a Machine Operator where he operated machinery to form gears for transmissions and move parts from one department to another.

Mr Chester is a graduate of Ivy Tech Community College, Indianapolis, Indiana. He is originally from Frankfort, Indiana, and currently resides in Indianapolis, Indiana.

AFIA applauds house amendment to increase FDA funding for feed ingredient reviews

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) applauds the passage of the U.S. House of Representative's fiscal 2023 'minibus' package of six appropriations bills, which includes a key amendment offered by Rep. Jim Baird, R-Ind.-04, and other bipartisan cosponsors to dedicate $8 million to the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine to help with expediting reviews for new feed ingredients. On average, studies have shown that it takes companies three-to-five years to get new ingredients through the FDA's rigorous review process, which prevents innovation from making it to farmers and ranchers in a timely way.

AFIA President and CEO Constance Cullman issued the following statement after the passage of the bill on Wednesday, 'Rep. Baird said it best when he shared that it is important for the United States to have a regulatory framework that offers a timely and predictable path to the marketplace for feed ingredients and that can keep pace with the evolving science of animal nutrition. The additional FDA funding for feed ingredient reviews in the House-passed spending bill is a huge win for the U.S. feed industry, putting us more on-par with other countries that continue to move forward with safe ingredients to enhance the safety, quality, environmental impact and nutrition of feed and pet food.

"We thank the committee and Representatives Baird, Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif.-20, David Rouzer, R-N.C.-07, Jim Costa, D-Calif.-16, Kim Schrier, D-Wash.-08, and Dusty Johnson, R-S.D.-At large, for cosponsoring the amendment. We urge Senate appropriators to recognise the need to keep America's agriculture competitive and include this dedicated funding in their final appropriations legislation.'
