Tyson Foods names Brady Stewart Group President of Fresh Meats

Tyson Foods has announced Brady Stewart as Group President, Fresh Meats, who will begin his new role at the start of the new year. Mr Stewart will report to President and Chief Executive Officer Donnie King and will be responsible for strengthening the competitiveness of the company's beef and pork businesses through innovation, technology, data and analytics. Mr Stewart's focus will also include optimising business processes and building efficiencies in the operational and commercial activities of the business.

'Brady is a well-respected, proven industry leader who will help position us for continued success,' says Donnie King, Tyson Foods President and Chief Executive Officer. 'His background in building business strategies that drive outcomes and identify efficiencies across complex supply chains is critical for this role.'

Mr Stewart brings more than two decades of experience in the protein industry. He joins the company from Smithfield Foods where he has served as chief operating officer since 2021. In that role, he led Smithfield's business across its more than 500 company-owned farms and 46 production facilities in the U.S. and developed operating systems that aligned efforts across different segments of the business to drive efficiencies and optimise business activities and outcomes.

Additionally, he was responsible for operations of the company's vertically integrated domestic supply chain, including sourcing and procurement, transportation, warehousing and logistics. Prior to that, he held the role of chief manufacturing officer and was the executive vice president, U.S. Hog Production at Smithfield. He has also worked at the Kansas City Sausage Company as chief operating officer, among other leadership roles.

'The reputation of Tyson Foods and its products are world renowned, and I am delighted to be joining the team to help drive growth and deliver for its customers and consumers,' says Mr Stewart. 30 years of GMP+ International: always looking forwards

30 years ago, the Dutch feed sector changed course. Following a number of incidents involving contaminated feed, the sector agreed on Good Manufacturing Practices, which would later grow to become the GMP+ Feed Certification scheme. It didn't all go without a hitch, but GMP+ International always kept looking forwards.

The mood was not very positive in the early '90s when the Dutch feed sector was shaken by feed contamination for the umpteenth time. More negative headlines, once again being the subject of public debate, once again having to pull out all the stops in order to limit the damage to exports of animal products and the health of animals and humans. But what was lacking in terms of positivity in those days was made up for by determination and action: they had to change course. 

Doubts
That was easier said than done, recalls Johan den Hartog, who had a seat at the conference table on behalf of the Feed Product Board and went on to become Managing Director of GMP+ International.

'In the 1980s, there were various problems with salmonella, heavy metals and carry-over of anti-coccidiostats in feed products. There were reservations about tackling these issues in a structured way. Rules were seen as restricting the freedom to choose raw materials. There was a lack of knowledge about who a company's customers were in the subsequent links in the chain. There were also doubts about whether customers would want to pay for stricter requirements. This was all linked to a way of thinking and awareness that the feed sector is part of the food chain."

Pressure from outside, including from the Dutch animal production sectors and the government, ultimately did lead to support for a more structured approach. Back then it was exclusively about the exporting dairy, meat and egg sectors in the Netherlands. 

The result was a code for 'Good Manufacturing Practice' agreed in 1992, a series of measures designed to guarantee a safe production process. 'GMP' was born. At that time, there was nothing like the thorough feed safety management system we know today in the shape of GMP+, let alone international involvement. GMP was a strictly local – Dutch – matter, although it wasn't long before interest was noted from over the border in Germany. 

Chain approach
That changed in the late '90s. Even after the advent of GMP, the sector was hit several times by incidents like mad cow disease (BSE) and dioxin and heavy metals in feed. In part, these issues were also the result of more refined analysis methods, increased quality awareness, a more critical animal production sector and a nervous Dutch government that did not yet have a statutory framework for measures. Despite the fact that GMP incorporated the first ISO 9001 requirements as early as 1995, GMP was still too reactive.

The incidents would have major consequences for the scope of GMP. The most important lesson was that the source of a contamination generally lies at the start of the feed chain, explains Mr Den Hartog. In 1999, the representatives of the Dutch feed sector therefore took the most important decisions in the history of the scheme: 'We decided to bring the entire feed raw materials chain within the scope of the scheme. This chain approach led to growing international participation." 

In order to make GMP more proactive, HACCP was made an integral part of the system. Traceability, recalls and an Early Warning System were also added to the scheme in order to limit damage if a contamination did occur. As a result of these additions, GMP acquired the now familiar '+' after its name; it had grown to become much more than just a set of guidelines. It had become a 'brand' that stands for safe feed. 

Although both the content and scope of the scheme in the early years were incomparable with today's worldwide, chain-wide, ISO and HACCP-based scheme, in those years the foundations were laid for a key value that GMP+ International continues to passionately advocate to this day: together. The first Good Manufacturing Practices were the result of businesses looking beyond their own interests and joining forces for a shared goal.

Of, for and by the sector
'Working together has always been part of our DNA', reflects Roland van der Post, who has been Managing Director of GMP+ International since August 2021. 'We are a scheme of, for and by the sector. Companies still have an important voice in shaping the scheme. That is the only way to keep it relevant and workable in a continuously changing environment. In spite of all the changes of the past thirty years, collaboration has been the big constant during all that time. If we work together, we can achieve great things. The sector has proved that many times."

Now in 2022, the GMP+ Feed Certification has over 19,000 participants in nearly 90 countries around the world. The centre of gravity remains in Europe, but over the past ten years there has been a great increase in participation in emerging regions such as Eastern Europe, Asia and North and South America. In nearly all the countries in which GMP+ International is active, there are collaborations and partnerships with industry bodies, consultants and training institutes on the ground. They know the local market better than anyone else and act as the connecting link between GMP+ International and the feed companies. And of course the certification bodies also play a crucial role in reaching and facilitating the companies.

Robust chain
With over 19,000 participants throughout the production chain, GMP+ International is the biggest feed safety scheme in the world. But those figures would mean nothing if they did not lead to results. GMP+ International's goal has never been to become the biggest.  GMP+ International is a not-for-profit organisation and its mission is based on a vision: Feed Safety Worldwide, a task of unprecedented scale.

Nevertheless, GMP+ International's growth proves that they are getting somewhere. Leading companies increasingly expect suppliers and service providers to conform to the scheme. As a result, an ever-larger part of the international feed chain is certified. This includes not only production companies but also businesses involved in collection, trade, storage, transhipment and transport. This chain approach, in which companies only do business with other companies that also have GMP+ (or equivalent) certification, is resulting in a chain that is becoming ever more robust. 

Although incidents can never be completely ruled out, the sector has been spared major incidents for the past 15 years. Partly thanks to the incorporation of HACCP into the scheme, feed companies are working more proactively than ever before. And if contaminations do take place, thanks to the Early Warning System they are quickly detected and nipped in the bud. 

GMP+ Academy
However, past performance offers no guarantees for the future. Which is why GMP+ International is investing heavily in knowledge sharing. The idea is that if you understand why certain precautions are necessary, you are more likely to take them seriously and comply with them. Via the brand-new GMP+ Academy they, together with GMP+ International and their affiliated partners, provide professional training materials for feed companies worldwide. This online platform, which is accessible to all, makes it easy for businesses to improve knowledge and awareness in the workplace.

GMP+ International also continues to proactively engage in dialogue with the sector in order to make sure the scheme remains appropriate, workable and future-proof. As part of this effort, GMP+ International organised the Global Feed Safety Summit, held in the spring of 2022. Over the course of three days in Berlin, feed experts from all over the world discussed the major challenges for the future, such as climate change, sustainability and food security. The conference was a success. John Kirkpatrick, Agricultural Manager at TESCO, describes it as 'one of the most far-sighted conferences I have ever attended'.

Agenda for the future
The management of GMP+ International also left Berlin with many new insights and ideas – and, more importantly, a concrete agenda for the future. For instance, they are working with the Global Feed LCA Institute to explore how sustainability claims can be verified. GMP+ International will also be looking into whether elements of feed safety can benefit from blockchain technology, in partnership with the Covantis data platform. And in the area of antimicrobial resistance, GMP+ International plans to extend the scheme standards to vulnerable regions.

'We are enormously proud of what we have achieved as a sector over the past 30 years', says Mr Van der Post. 'What started out as pioneering work has grown into a true feed safety culture. There is no longer any need to convince anyone of the importance of a safe feed chain. However, we do always need to remain alert and be open to new developments and innovations. The initiatives prompted by the Global Feed Safety Summit offer hope for the future.'  

In this way, GMP+ International, together with the sector, continues to work towards Feed Safety Worldwide. Because despite all the progress we have made, feed safety will always remain a 'work in progress'.

Dr Charles Starkey, Ph. D., announced as new Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs for NARA

The North American Renderers Association (NARA) is pleased to announce that Charles Starkey, Ph.D., has been named the association's new Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs. In this role, Dr Starkey will also be acting as Director of Research for the Fats and Proteins Research Foundation (FPRF), the rendering industry's research organisation.

The position of Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs serves as an advisor to the North American rendering industry on science, animal disease, and feed safety issues, and oversees all animal food safety research, training, and policy. The FPRF Research Director leads all research efforts for the foundation, assists FPRF members, and plays an active role in FPRF funded research programs.

Dr Starkey will represent the rendering industry to regulatory agencies, academia, and partner organisations on industry issues such as sustainability, animal health, biosecurity, pathogen control, and environmental impact, as well as provide technical advice and assist members to meet regulatory requirements and standards of the Rendering Code of Practice.

'I am honoured and humbled by the opportunity to return to working with an outstanding group of people and to once again continue to serve the animal food industry in this capacity,' Dr Starkey says.

Dr Starkey received his BS and MS degrees from Arkansas State University; and his Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from Kansas State University. Prior to NARA, Dr Starkey served as Assistant Professor at Auburn University's Poultry Science Department where he taught courses in animal feed manufacturing and poultry production and led research activities focused on pet food and feed manufacturing, nutrition, and gastrointestinal physiology. A seasoned educator and researcher, he brings a tailored skillset to the role including experience in the areas of animal food manufacturing, animal food safety, and animal nutrition.

'We are excited to welcome Charles to the NARA and FPRF team,' NARA and FPRF President and CEO, Kent Swisher says. 'His experience and expertise will be of great benefit to both our members and ongoing research efforts.'

Dr Starkey resides in Auburn, Alabama with his wife, Jessica. He has over 30 years of combined experience in cattle, swine, poultry, and pet nutrition. Through his work with FPRF, he will continue to be heavily involved in animal feed and petfood research, and the training and mentoring of students.

Jacquelyn Thousand appointed as new US Territory Sales Representative for Dairy with Anpario

Anpario, the independent manufacturer and international distributor of natural, sustainable feed additives for animal health, nutrition and biosecurity, is pleased to announce the appointment of Jacquelyn Thousand as Territory Sales Representative for Dairy in the United States.

Alltech continues to support mentorship program for women in agri-food

Alltech is proud to continue to partner in the Women in Food & Agriculture (WFA) Mentorship Program. Applications are now open for new mentors of any gender and for female mentees from across the global food and agriculture sector. Now in its third year, the free-to-join program matches applicants based on their preferences, which can include gender of mentor, areas of expertise, language and industry sector, and offers opportunities for women in food and agriculture to develop meaningful industry connections.

'Over the past few years, all of us have come to more deeply value the power of human connection,' says Dr Mark Lyons, president and CEO of Alltech. 'A commitment to the growth and development of another person unleashes energy, inspires ideas and empowers both individuals to have a greater impact. We view our involvement in the Women in Food & Agriculture mentorship program as an investment not only in the lives of women but in the future of agriculture as the industry most integral to the nourishment and vitality of our planet.'

Findings from the annual WFA survey and ongoing feedback from all levels of the food and agriculture sector consistently suggest that a hurdle to greater success for women in the global agri-food industry is a lack of mentorship opportunities. To tackle this issue, WFA launched its Mentorship Program. In partnership with Alltech in 2022, the initiative grew with 320 industry representatives matched across two cohorts. Now in 2023, the program will be open for applicants year-round with two matching sessions taking place to help even more women in food and agriculture progress their careers. The initiative has supported a variety of people around the world from CEOs of agribusinesses to small-scale farmers, from academics to ag-tech professionals, with sector representatives paired with mentors that complement their professional objectives.

'We are very pleased to again have Alltech supporting the 2023 WFA Mentorship Program,' says Elisabeth Mork-Eidem, global chair of WFA. 'Mentorship is vital in supporting women across food and agriculture in developing their careers, we've had very positive feedback from both mentors and mentees. Many of our mentors joined the initiative as a selfless act of support for equality in our sector, but realized they got as much out of the experience as the mentees. This is such an exciting opportunity to learn about yourself, develop your skills and support an important initiative that is working to improve diversity, equality and inclusion in the food and agriculture industry.' 

For those interested in taking part in the 2023 Mentorship Program, WFA is looking for mentors of any gender who have at least one year of experience in the food and ag sector. During matching, WFA will ensure all mentors have more work experience than mentees, so this should not be a barrier to mentors applying. Potential mentees should be women working in the food and ag industry who would benefit from help, guidance and support from a senior sector representative.

IPPE: AMANDUS KAHL presents the must-haves of feed production

At this year's International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE), AMANDUS KAHL will present three special features in animal feed production. The trade fair, which takes place not far from the American branch, is one of the world's largest exhibitions for feed producing technologies. Amandus Kahl will be exhibiting the latest technical achievements in pelleting and conditioning at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta from January 24 to 26. 

After the trade fairs have increased again in 2022, AMANDUS KAHL wants to show its global presence again in the coming year. The first event will be the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, Georgia in January 2023. The leading experts in the field of feed production meet at this exhibition every year. This year, AMANDUS KAHL will be showcasing several new machines for the production of animal feed. The focus will be on the pellet mill 38-600 as well as the expander OE23 and an expander crown outlet. 

Feed production relies on pellet mills
As one of the leading manufacturers of pellet mills, they will also make such a machine the centerpiece of their IPPE presentation. Pelleting is the method of choice for the production of compound feed and for ensuring the supply of high-quality green forage the whole year round. The flat die pellet mill is specially designed for products with different structures, densities, binding properties or sizes. After the product to be pelleted is fed into the pelleting chamber, the pan grinder rollers press it through our flat die. At the outlet, the endless strands produced are cut to the desired length by means of knives. This allows the user to determine the size of the compound feed pellets and thus adapt them to the different animal species.

The expander OE23 as an all-rounder
The production of feedstuff requires many different production steps. The expander plays a particularly important role in compound feed production technology. This is one of the reasons why Amandus Kahl will be presenting the expander OE23 in Atlanta. The machine is used in a variety of feed production processes, including mixing and kneading, homogenisation and agglomeration, as well as short-term conditioning. Thus, the all-rounder is not only used at the end of the production process to obtain Expandat, but already in preparation of pelleting. Due to the wide range of possible applications, the machine ensures a lot of savings, but at the same time also the specific improvement of individual feed components.

Using the crown outlet provides even greater flexibility. At the expander outlet, the pressure drops spontaneously. The product expands, and a part of the added water evaporates (flash evaporation). BiOWiSH Technologies announces CEO retirement, names successor

BiOWiSH Technologies, Inc. has announced the upcoming retirement of Chief Executive Officer, Ian Edwards, effective December 31, 2022, and the appointment of Graham Beesley as CEO on January 1, 2023. 

Mr Edwards has brought a wealth of experience to BiOWiSH during his nine-year tenure, managing a wide range of industry partnerships and business relationships on a global scale. Through his leadership, the company focused on developing unique technology, implementing industrial-scale manufacturing processes and ensuring the highest standards of quality. Mr Edwards created a home for BiOWiSH in Cincinnati, established the company's research and development processes and laid the groundwork for the company's proprietary HoloGene 3™ technology.  

Before BiOWiSH, Mr Edwards had a successful career at Procter and Gamble Company (P&G) where he spent 36 years on assignments across Europe and North America. His last role was Vice President and General Manager of P&G Chemicals.

Ÿnsect accelerates its international development in North America

Ÿnsect, a certified B Corp company and world leader in the production of premium insect-based ingredients, is entering an accelerated phase of international development with the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Ardent Mills for an industrial facility in the United States and the signing of a joint development agreement with Corporativo Kosmos in Mexico. 

These agreements were signed just as Ÿnsect launched the world's largest insect farm in Amiens, France, with a height of 36m and a building surface area of 40,000m2. With the arrival of the first insects on site in recent weeks, the livestock's growth phase has already started. The operation of the facility will be rolled out over the next few months, with each site's remaining workshops to be phased into operation. 

With Ÿnsect having already sold more than the capacity of the Amiens site in the coming years, taking on new projects is key to matching the growing demand from its customers. This will also allow Ÿnsect to build on the momentum for its premium ingredients while fostering a positive impact on ecosystems. 

The partnership announcements in the United States and Mexico reflect Ÿnsect's development ambitions, with plans to build 10 to 15 farms worldwide by 2030. Ÿnsect plans to expand its activities on all continents to help meet the challenge of feeding more than 8.5 billion people in a healthy and sustainable way by 2030.

In order to do this, Ÿnsect is focusing its developmens within the heart of agricultural areas to increase easy access to raw materials used to feed the insects, such as agricultural co-products from the cereal industry. The choice of these strategic locations, with close proximity to resources needed, reflects the company's commitment to limit the impact of its activity on the environment, including CO2 emissions and water consumption. Ÿnsect has adopted a circular economy model based on its vertical farms to create value chains aligned with the Paris COP21 agreements.

An agreement with Ardent Mills to accelerate Ÿnsect's implementation in North America
Through this agreement, Ÿnsect affirms its intention to expand its insect-based ingredient production activities in the United States. As part of this expansion, Ÿnsect will explore synergies with Ardent Mills, the leading supplier of wheat flour in North America, with the aim of starting the construction of a new site in 2023. This agreement follows the acquisition of Jord Producers, the group's first farm on US soil, in Nebraska in March 2022.

An exclusive agreement with Corporativo Kosmos for a first location in Mexico
Ÿnsect and Corporativo Kosmos, a leading provider of food and general services in Mexico, have also just signed a joint development agreement to establish and operate a first insect farm in Mexico, with construction also aiming to start before the end of 2023. This agreement marks the culmination of a year-long collaboration between these two key players in the global food industry. Mexico is the leading country in the world in terms of human consumption of insects and insect-based proteins. In addition, this insect farm will bring Ÿnsect closer to the United States, by far the largest future market for insect proteins.

Webinar series on specialty crops to be held January-March, 2023

The University of Missouri Extension is offering an eight-week winter webinar series on growing specialty crops in tunnels.

"Growing Specialty Crops in Tunnels - Protected Agriculture" runs 6:30-8pm Tuesdays, January 24-March 14, 2023.

Extension educators and researchers from the Midwest, as well as high tunnel growers, will teach the classes. Topics include an overview of structures and mulches, high tunnel fruit production, irrigation, fertility management and soil issues, insect and disease management, the economics of diversifying crop rotations, high tunnel tomato production, a grower panel on winter production, and benefits of low tunnel production.

'There has been an increased interest in the production of specialty crops in high, medium, and low tunnels over the past several decades,' says MU Extension horticulture specialist Justin Keay. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service offers cost-share programs to support the purchase of high tunnels.

Presenters will explain how tunnels can give growers more control over temperature, light, and water, improving growing conditions for plants. Keay says extending the growing season by using tunnels lets growers market before and after the peak of the season when a glut of produce often leads to lower prices and smaller returns for growers.

The series will detail both the opportunities and challenges that come with growing in these systems, Mr Keay says.

Recordings of classes will be available for registrants who can't attend the live sessions.

Scholarships are available to Missouri beginning farmers and can be redeemed at registration.

Registration is now open for AFIA’s Purchasing and Ingredient Suppliers conference

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) has opened registration for its 2023 Purchasing and Ingredient Suppliers Conference (PISC), happening on March 7-9 in Orlando, Fla. This three-day, must-attend program includes education and networking events for hundreds of feed ingredient buyers and sellers across the animal food manufacturing industry. 

'We have heard loud and clear from our members: animal food industry professionals come to PISC to do business,' says Rebecca Kane, CMP, AFIA's director of meetings and events. 'This year, we are excited to offer even more opportunities to foster conversation and relationship building between suppliers and customers.' 

In addition to the networking events, conference attendees will hear presentations on myriad topics, including supply chain challenges, recent news on African swine fever and other animal diseases, effectively communicating about agriculture, navigating sustainability to support the feed industry and stakeholders, and forecasting the grain and economic outlooks. 

Early-bird registration is available now until January 6 for $650 for AFIA members and $2,200 for nonmembers. Following that date, the fee will increase to $725 and $2,500, respectively. Through the Buyers to PISC program, member-company professionals in buying roles who normally would not be able to attend the event are invited to apply for a conference scholarship.
