27/03/2015: 80 percent of livestock producing regions face high threats from mycotoxins - BIOMIN survey

Mycotoxin-related threats to livestock production are severe or high in 80 percent of regions worldwide according to the latest BIOMIN mycotoxin survey. Those areas registered three or more major mycotoxins at concentration levels known to cause harm in animals. The survey results provide insights on the incidence of the six major mycotoxins in the agricultural commodities used for livestock feed.
 

Main findings 

Livestock production in North America and Southern Europe faces severe threat from mycotoxin contamination.

South America, Asia, and the rest of Europe all face high threat from mycotoxins.
Globally, deoxynivalenol poses the most frequent threat to livestock though levels of fumonisins and zearalenone also present a cause for concern.

Mycotoxin contamination concentrations up from last year 

“Clearly, mycotoxin contamination will be a greater concern for producers in most countries compared to last year,” said Ursula Hofstetter, Director Competence Center Mycotoxins at BIOMIN.
  
Compared to the previous year, the number of samples positive for aflatoxins decreased from 30 percent in 2013 to 22 percent in 2014, though the average concentration nearly doubled from 33 ppb to 64 ppb. The frequency of the other five mycotoxins rose compared to 2013, while the average concentrations of zearalenone and deoxynivalenol nearly doubled, to 221 ppb and 1394 ppb, respectively.
   

Multiple mycotoxin occurrence is common 

For the first time, the survey includes results of multiple mycotoxin analysis of more than 380 mycotoxins and fungal metabolites, Spectrum 380®, using state-of-the-art liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in a single analysis step. Spectrum 380® analysis reveals that a typical agricultural commodity contains on average 30 different mycotoxin metabolites.

“By offering more powerful and accurate mycotoxin detection, Spectrum 380® can help farmers to understand situations that they encounter in the field that are not readily revealed by traditional techniques,” added Mrs Hofstetter.

About the survey 

The annual BIOMIN Mycotoxin Survey constitutes the longest running and most comprehensive survey of its kind, using advanced analytic tools on more than six thousand samples taken from 64 countries worldwide. 26,000 analyses were conducted to identify the presence and potential risk posed to livestock animal production.

On Wednesday Joel G. Newman, the President and CEO of the American Feed Industry Association made an official statement regarding the re-introduction of the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act:

  
"AFIA is pleased with the decision to re-introduce the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, just as we supported a similar version when introduced in the last Congress. We strongly feel there should be a federal food labeling solution, one that consumers can rely upon, but which recognizes the safety of ingredients produced by modern agricultural biotechnology.

"We support Representatives Mike Pompeo (Republican-Kansas) and GK Butterfield (Democrat-NCarolina) for standing up for what is right by working to ensure the FDA remains the authoritative power regarding food safety and labeling standards, just as the agency has for more than a century.

"AFIA will continue to work with Congress to make sure the specific needs of the animal food industry are addressed in the bill when it is enacted."

Supporting intestinal health with SANACORE®EN has unique health benefits.

Piglets being fed the product, which is gradually released in the gastrointestinal tract, are less likely to suffer from intestinal disorders, and as such they have fewer problems with Streptococcus infections; that is the experience of swine veterinarian Dr René Sol.

Since the 2006 ban of antimicrobial growth promoters from pig feeds, swine veterinarian Dr René Sol from DAP VUG has been highly interested in alternative remedies that could support optimal intestinal health.

"A healthy intestine is the foundation for a healthy animal performing at a high level. In my opinion, every investment made in improving the animal’s intestinal health, is earned back very easily."
  
In his veterinary practice, Dr Sol has been using SANACORE®EN during the last four years to support intestinal health in many pig farms.

"My experience is that this product adds real value to pig farms with recurrent Streptococcus suis problems. In several pig farms, the average antibiotic Animal Daily Dose per animal year (ADD, Jensen et al., 2004) decreased by 50 to 90 percent since they started using SANACORE®EN in their weaning and growing piglet feeds."

According to Dr Sol, the difficult part with any kind of health additives is that the effects are never 100 percent identical in each farm.

"Many different factors affect the performance of these products, it is thus very important basic management conditions are satisfied. In other words: the pig farmer must meet the requirements for adequate feed and water provision, as well as minimal hygiene and climate conditions."

Weaning dip
Piglets are especially sensitive to factors negatively affecting intestinal health. At the end of the lactation period, piglets consume 1 to 1.5 litres of milk per day as well as small quantities of solid feed.
   
"After weaning, the sow milk is taken away abruptly and piglets have to learn to survive on solid feed and water," explains the swine veterinarian.

"This extremely stressful event is the cause of the well-known weaning dip in growth. The lack of nutrients and the associated reduced intestinal blood flow cause severe damage to intestinal cells and villi length and surface. It goes without saying that this is disastrous for the digestive capacity of the piglet."

During the post-weaning stress period, the structure of the intestinal barrier function is also affected: intercellular junctions become loose and pathogens find the opportunity to enter the bloodstream.

"It is at this critical moment that streptococci, already present in the intestine, can find their way to the blood stream of the piglet”, admits Dr Sol.

"This is the reason why streptococcal infections in the form of meningitis and sudden deaths often occur two weeks after weaning. In addition, secondary complications with E. coli play an important role further aggravating the issue."

Approach from the intestine
According to Dr Sol, the correct way to tackle streptococci is to begin with proper nurturing of the intestine in the young piglets. 

"Supplementation of SANACORE®EN in the weaning diet encourages optimal condition of the intestine as the different ingredients of the additive limit the adverse effects following reduced feed intake after the weaning dip."

Dr Sol is basing his experiences with SANACORE®EN on farm results seen in several of his customers.

"I have noticed significantly lower mortality rates in piglets and also the drug use on the farms has dropped dramatically."

According to the veterinarian, feed manufacturers work already on the development of specialized piglet feeds for the same reasons.
   

Dr Sol refers to SANACORE®EN as an 'optimal ' combination of coated salts of organic acids and encapsulated essential oils. This health additive supports the complete gastrointestinal tract thanks to various active components that are released at specific places in the intestine. Whether this theory is finally proven is not crucial for Dr Sol.

"We do not perform scientific research here at the field level; as long as the product works as we expect it to work, we are satisfied. In customers with recurring streptococcal problems that have started to supplement their piglet feeds with SANACORE®EN, I hardly have to prescribe antibiotics anymore for piglets.

In some farms, with complicated severe problems, that may not respond to this additive, it is usually the case that other infection routes (the airways) as well as the type and the pathogenicity of the Streptococcus present play a determining role in the development of the disease."

More than ten
In the meantime, more than ten pig farmers of Dr Sol’s practice routinely use SANACORE®EN in their feed: dosage in the weaning feed is 3 kg per ton, and in the growing feed 2 kg per ton. Mixing is done at the feed manufacturer level, as in this way the product can be also included in the pellet.

26/03/2015: Grain handling equipment upgrades at Strawson’s Farms

In 1998 Strawson’s Farms, Louth, installed a range of 30 tonnes per hour (tph) and 60 tph grain handling equipment from Perry of Oakley Ltd and a 20tph drier. More recently Mr Strawson has found this system had not been able to keep up with the amount of grain he is now producing on the farm, and so made the decision to upgrade his drier and handling equipment. Each year Mr Strawson may need to dry up to 6000 tonnes which will be a combination of wheat, barley, oilseed rape and beans.  
 
It was decided the 20tph drier would be changed to a Perry 50tph M611 drier and the handling equipment was upgraded to the 100tph Perry heavy-duty agricultural range of conveyors and elevators along with re-using one of the existing Perry conveyors. 
   
The heavy duty agricultural range (from 60tph to 120tph) is a mid range specification that bridges the gap between the lower capacity agricultural range (from 8tph to 60tph) and the high capacity industrial range of products (from 60tph up to 600tph). All Perry machinery is designed and manufactured in house and has an all bolted and riveted construction with heavy-duty dimple form countersunk joint for high mechanical strength. The heavy-duty agricultural range is suitable for a throughput up to 30,000 tonnes per annum.

The new handling equipment at Strawson’s Farms incorporates a 100tph curved combination conveyor, two 100tph store filling conveyors, a 100tph flow and return conveyor & two 100tph single lift elevators. Mr Strawson was happy to use Perry handling equipment again as it had performed well on the original installation and found it straightforward to use & maintain. 
  

The drying process starts with product being tipped into an existing pit which feeds a 300mm intake screw that was already installed at the farm. The product is then picked up by a 14.45m 100tph elevator which then routes the product to either the drier via a 9.1m flow and return conveyor, or feeds the product to an 8.5m 100tph conveyor which is connected to a 27.5m 100tph 15° curve combination conveyor. The system was designed and drawn by Perry’s Area Sales Manager which is a service available to all our customers. We help our customers design a solution for their needs using our over 60 years of grain handling and drying experience.

The curve combination conveyor is made up using Perry’s market leading horizontal conveyor and flight elevator designs. Each conveyor that leaves the factory has been tailored to suit the customer’s needs, with a wide range of optional extras and heavy duty construction Perry’s will be able to fill any customer’s requirements. 

The curve runs along the line of the roof giving more vertical storage height. Coming off of the curved conveyor are two existing Perry conveyors that were uprated to cope with the increased required capacity, these deposit the product to the back of the store, allowing the store to be filled to its maximum potential. If the product has been routed through the Perry drier the shutter discharge deposits the product into another 8.5m 100tph conveyor and is then moved up to the curve combination conveyor via a 10.55m 100tph elevator. 

Perry’s agricultural and heavy duty agricultural range of elevators are fitted with low stretch, oil resistant EP nitrile rubber belting as standard and have slatted pulleys to help reduce the build-up of material on the pulleys. Along with a durable galvanised steel finish the elevators have been designed to offer a high specification machine at an affordable price.
  

When the drier is operated at 125°C it is capable of a throughput of 48.5tph (based on dry wheat at 750kg/m³), it stands at just over 10m tall by 6m wide. This gives the drier a holding capacity of 51 tonnes. All Perry driers designed and manufactured to BS6399 for wind loading & BS5950 for structural strength, the drier has been designed to be as efficient and long lasting as possible. Perry has a dedicated research and development drier that allows them to constantly update their technology and understanding of their driers. All Perry driers have a reliable pneumatic shutter discharge system.

Mr Strawson’s new M611 drier is fitted with Perry’s new Light Grain & Chaff Recovery System (LGCRS). The LGCRS is a pneumatically operated system that is installed at the base of the exhaust plenum. It has been designed to help reduce the build up of dust, chaff & light seeds in the exhaust plenum by periodically discharging any product that may have been drawn, by the fans, from the grain column and puts it back with the main grain flow. This is an optional extra that can be fitted to new Perry driers and it can be retrofitted to existing Perry driers that have been fitted with shutter discharges.

The whole system is controlled using the Perry’s PLC drier and plant control panel. The 12 inch touchscreen PLC panel has been designed and programmed by Perry engineers and is capable of controlling up to 10 machines as standard along with the drier. The panel displays a mimic of the complete store as well as having multiple automatic and manual routes available. In the drier control section alone there are over 70 alarms and messages, making drier operation easy to understand. 
   

Another impressive feature of the drier panel is its ability to calculate and set the parameters needed for the target moisture content when the crop type and intake moisture content is specified. There is also no need to babysit the drier as the panel can send live status updates via email or text to designated addresses and numbers. It can also be controlled remotely from any computer, allowing Perry staff to offer remote support to any drier. 

Mr Strawson said: “Having used Perry handling equipment previously I was happy to upgrade to the Perry heavy duty agricultural range of machinery. The drier is performing well and the LGCRS saves me time, as I don’t have to empty the exhaust plenum as often. The PLC Panel is easy to use and overall we are very happy with our installation.”
