Tapco was conceived in the early 1970s by Paul D Taylor, President and Ted W Beaty, Retired, to fill a void in the elevator bucket industry. At that time, there was only one manufacturer of non-metallic buckets in the USA All the other buckets were made from fabricated steel. With the inherent problems of steel buckets and the limited range of the existing polyethylene brand, the time was right for Tapco.


The company has been in its own 92,500 square foot facility for over 25 years. This has allowed us to bring our injection moulding ‘in house’ for better control and cost effectiveness. Tapco has nine injection moulding machines ranging from a small 150 tonne to a very large 1000 tonne press. This allows us to make our entire range of buckets in the most expedient and quality controlled manner.


Tapco stocks the largest inventory of elevator buckets and bolts in the world, some 900,000 buckets and 14 million bolts. We also have the largest inventory of abrasion resistant sheeting, drag flights and hanger bearings in North America.

28/07/2015: Sourdough fermentation process shows promise for gluten-free baked goods

Using sourdough fermentation to manufacture baked goods may make them safe to eat for people who are sensitive to gluten, according to a July 14 symposium at IFT15: Where Science Feeds Innovation hosted by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) in Chicago.

Carlo Giuseppe Rizzello, PhD, a researcher at the University of Bari, Italy, presented findings that show baking bread and other products with wheat flour rendered gluten-free by sourdough fermentation can be digested by people with celiac disease and other gluten sensitivities. In addition, bread made this way tastes more like regular bread than the typical gluten-free breads, has an extended shelf life, and contains more minerals, vitamins, amino acids and fibre.

Sourdough is fermented with naturally occurring lactobacilli and yeasts. In comparison with breads made with cultivated yeast, it usually has a mildly sour taste because of the lactic acid produced by the lactobacilli. It was commonly used in baking until about 50 years ago, when it was replaced by the much-quicker baker’s yeast for leavening.

“The advantage of this bread is the taste,” Dr Rizello said.

“This bread is refined so it is more similar to conventional white flour bread, but is more nutritious.”

The process Dr Rizzello studied uses water, wheat flour, fungal proteases and sourdough lactic acid to produce a hydrolysed wheat flour suitable for baking that reacts like gluten flour.

The International Association of Operative Millers has started planning for the 120th Annual IAOM Conference & Expo in Columbus, Ohio, April 4-8, 2016, and they need your knowledge and ideas to make it a success.  Their goal is to offer attendees the best knowledge and tools to do their jobs more effectively and to make their organisations more successful through a broad range of sessions.

They are looking proposals for their Technical Operations, Product Protection, Facility Management, Specialty Milling and Employee Management tracks. IAOM’s annual conference is the premier education event in the milling and grain processing industries. For more information and to submit your Educational Session ideas, please visit their website and submit the online application. The deadline for these submissions is September 1, 2015.

For Product Showcase submissions, they are looking for 5 products that are either new and innovative or that have had major improvements or have a new application. Companies submitting proposals for the Product Showcase must be exhibiting in the 2016 expo. The opportunity to step out and meet millers is always a pleasure. Meeting a miller in person, as we all know, involves understanding a miller’s unique personal perspective. In any mill operation, the miller is a central person (It is qualified people who run and control the technology and machinery to ensure the smooth running of the mill).

As each person is different in many ways, millers must also be appreciated in their own way too. In my opinion, this means conversing about their mills and how they produce for their customers. Millers do not just drop in and out of the industry with high turnover rates, they learn, train and spend a long amount of time building their personal touch and craft.

In my work with The International Milling Directory, and Milling and Grain magazine, I have had the privilage of visiting countries all over the world, and have been fascinated to talk to millers about how individuals deal with both the core challenges that face all of us in the industry, but also the specific challenges that come with geography.

No matter what part of the world you are from, the International Milling Directory is always a great resource, when comparing, buying and understanding the latest products in the market place. It connects millers to the supply chain and the network they depend on, both locally and globally. It allows for greater communication in this industry that needs more transparency and connectivity.

Recently at the IDMA exhibition in Turkey, I had the pleasure of also reacquainting myself with some of the millers and suppliers that I have met at other places. This is one of the great aspects of trade shows like this one - real business relationships can be forged.

I was glad to provide many directories to many millers directly. The Turkish feed and flour market continues to grow at a very rapid pace. Undeterred by many political or economic sanctions, such as those affecting and disrupting Western trade means that Turkey is open to trading even more than ever before with Russia, the Middle East, Africa and South America.

The oversight and management from the TUSAF and TMO organizations seems to be working well for an industry growing and with further room to grow. The future is bright. We will hope to keep a keen eye on further innovations and developments as Turkey advances onwards.

27/07/2015: New FIAAP/VICTAM/GRAPAS event to be organised in 2017

At the press conference on June 10th, 2015 during FIAAP/VICTAM/GRAPAS International 2015 in Cologne, Mr Henk van de Bunt, General Manager of Victam International BV, announced that Victam will shortly be launching a new venture.

In conjunction with some of their conference organisers, Victam will organise a series of industry conferences spread over two days at a venue near Cologne in the early summer of 2017.

The typical delegate will be in the upper management of feed mills, flour mills, grain processors and biomass pelleting plants. Industry executives will comprise CEO’s, mill & plant directors and managers, nutritionists, feed formulators, etc.

The conference organisers will bring together acknowledged industry experts to produce a program of papers on each of the following subjects:

1.    Animal feed ingredients and additives
2.    Aqua feed ingredients and production
3.    Biomass pelleting technology   
4.    Petfood ingredients and production
5.    Flour milling & grain processing
6.    Feed production technology

There will be an additional area where companies will be able to have a small booth. 

An evening of dinner and entertainment will be organised on the first day for the conference delegates, the conference speakers and exhibitors.

A small admission fee will be charged to the industry delegates to visit the exhibition and a separate fee will be charged for the conferences.
