On 23rd September Nutreco announced the winners of this year's Nutreco Feed & Food Tech Challenge (NFTC2020). First held in 2017, the event acknowledges the best breakthrough innovations in livestock farming, aquaculture and, for the first time this year, alternative food proteins.

In this competition, 15 finalists were selected from over 110 submissions by startups from across the globe. On September 22, the top three finalists eniferBio, Poultrix and Bond Pet Foods pitched again to the NFTC2020 jury, this time in a hope to win the top spot in the competition.

The winner of the NFTC2020 and receiving the scientific validation trial is eniferBio. This startup from Finland works to create a better future using fewer natural resources by revolutionizing an existing single cell protein technology to produce raw materials for aquaculture. In second place is Poultrix from Israel, which provides a digital solution to help poultry integrators manage its farming operations in a more efficient, sustainable and responsible way.  Coming in at third place is Bond Pet Foods. The startup's breakthrough innovation was applying an innovative marketing and technology approach towards pet food.

Alex Obach, Aquaculture NFTC2020 Juror and Skretting Head of R&D commented, 'I'd like to congratulate eniferBio on their exciting technology solution and on winning the NFTC2020. Their innovation addresses raw material sustainability, one of the key challenges the aquaculture industry is facing. I look forward to working with them to validate their technology and explore further collaboration.'

Nutreco's Director of Venturing and NFTC2020 head juror Joost Matthijssen commented, 'We were impressed by the standard of breakthrough innovations throughout this competition. As the 15 finalists put their best foot forward during the pitch sessions to the jury and Nutreco colleagues around the world, we have added an audience award for the NFTC2020 Best Pitch. This award for the startup that gave the best pitch in terms of message delivery, presentation style and engagement was decided by Nutreco employees based.'

Fumi Ingredients is the winner of the audience award for the NFTC2020 Best Pitch and wins a 5,000 euro prize.

The next edition of the Nutreco Feed & Food Tech Challenge will take place in 2022.

Fi Europe CONNECT 2020, connecting the Fi Europe and Hi Europe communities digitally

Fi Europe co-located with Hi Europe has announced that they are postponing the live event to 2021 and are transitioning to virtual for their 2020 event.

Over recent weeks and months, the Fi Europe team has been in discussions with key industry stakeholders and partners to stay abreast of the challenges facing the F&B industry due to COVID-19.

While the event was set to take place this December with Informa's AllSecure guidelines incorporating the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness, the decision to postpone the live event and transition to virtual was taken as a result of the global nature of the event.

Fi Europe co-located with Hi Europe is a truly international event which brings together key industry players from all over the world. Given international travel is only returning gradually, stakeholders and partners felt it was difficult to ensure the same level of participation typically expected at the live event, and thus the Fi Europe team made the difficult decision to transition to a virtual format in 2020, with the expectation that they will return to a best-in-class physical event in 2021.

For 2020, the Fi Europe team are transforming Europe's largest F&B exhibition into a unique digital experience and expo. Fi Europe CONNECT 2020 is a virtual event designed to give the F&B community access to the global F&B ingredients industry, tools and collaboration opportunities they require to meet their business objectives.

Attracting over 8,000 attendees at their virtual event which will shape the future of the F&B industry, giving the community the chance to stay up to date with trends through 100+ on-demand and 16+ expert sessions and to use Fi Europe's data-driven matchmaking service to find the most relevant buyers for customers' products and solutions.

Julien Bonvallet, Brand Director for Fi Europe said, "The year 2020 has changed the world and the food industry: issues such as food safety and secure supply chains, along with the health aspects of nutrition, have become even more important. At our virtual experience, experts from all segments exchange views on these highly relevant topics and buyers and suppliers can connect with their peers in the F&B industry. That's why it was important for us to create a virtual experience that, even in these difficult times, will be successful for all participants".

Fi Europe CONNECT 2020 will take place from 23 November – 4 December 2020.

Record-breaking increases in wheat and corn production

by Rebecca Sherratt, Features Editor, Milling and Grain

World wheat production is continuing to increase as many countries get back into the swing of things following the initial surge of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Global wheat production has now hit a record-breaking 766 million metric tonnes (mmt), with production seeing a sharp increase in Argentina, Russia and Canada. The EU and United States are not experiencing this same increase but continue production at a steady level. Across the globe, countries are producing record amount of wheat, especially India and China, which is surprising, considering that they are countries not traditionally known for record levels of wheat export.

Global ending stocks are at a record high, at an estimated level of 317mmt. Should this estimate come to fruition, this volume would be a five percent increase compared to the 2019/20 harvest year. In contrast, US ending stocks are currently the lowest in six years and expected to decrease another 11 percent this year.

The US has seen lower imports and higher exports in recent months. Imports of wheat have lowered by 10 million bushels in August to 130 million. Food use in 2019/20 has lowered slightly to 962 million bushels. This is estimated to decrease slightly to 960 million bushels in 2020/21, due to the closure of restaurants and eating out services as a safety precaution against COVID-19. Other countries experiencing production drops include Kazakhstan and Turkey, both experiencing 1mt drops.

Complications are arising in Iowa, USA, where in mid-August a severe storm damaged maize crops and silos in the area. The total damage is expected to have reduced Iowa’s maize production by up to 18 percent whilst also destroying a significant amount of available storage for future harvests. December 2020 Chicago maize figures are now expected to experience an increase in prices, as a result of the unexpected shortage.
