Lallemand Animal Nutrition’s feed additive now available for use in all pigs in the European Union

Lallemand Animal Nutrition has announced its live yeast probiotic strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 (LEVUCELL SB) is now authorised as a feed additive for use in all pigs in the European Union (EU) (Regulation (EU) No. 2019/892 and Regulation (EU) No. 2018/347). S. cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 is the only zootechnical additive authorised in the European Union for use in all pigs categories.

LEVUCELL SB is now available for all stages of the swine production cycle including: suckling piglets, pigs for fattening; boars; gilts; sows; and weaned piglets. It can also be used in all minor porcine species such as wild boars. To date, this is the only zootechnical feed additive in the European Union with such an extensive authorisation for swine production.

Benefits for the whole cycle
While the application of LEVUCELL SB in sows and piglets is recognised to support performance, recent research conducted in partnership with the French Agronomic Research Institute (INRA) has shown very promising results on digestibility and growth performance in fattening pigs. These benefits were even greater under high temperatures, helping the animals to cope with the deleterious effects of heat stress. With high temperatures that can be encountered during summer, this new authorisation comes at a perfect time in the EU.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 (LEVUCELL SB) is authorised in the EU as a gut flora stabiliser under the zootechnical feed additives category and is available in many other countries outside the EU. It has been used in animal nutrition for more than 20 years and has shown its benefits on gut function thanks to unique properties on microbiota regulation. In addition, it is proven to improve animals' intestinal structure and natural defenses.

IGP Institute hosts Buhler-KSU executive milling course

With the hope of educating milling industry executives on the underlying principles of milling process and the parameters that can be influenced by the milling system, the Kansas State University IGP Institute hosted the Buhler-KSU Executive Milling training May 20-24, 2019.

'This training is designed to benefit current mill owners, directors and managers in the milling industry,' says Jason Watt, Kansas State University Buhler Instructor of Milling.

Six participants from four states and El Salvador gained an understanding of the challenges of the operating staff, and learned which critical control points to check in order to judge whether an operation is running well.

Along with classroom discussion and instruction, executives toured the Hal Ross Flour Mill and were able to gain a hands-on experience working with mill machinery, systems, processing and handling. The course participants represented a wide range of industry jobs.

'We had individuals from backgrounds of maintenance, wheat purchasing and finance. There was a large amount of discussion throughout the course, and everyone seemed to get the most out of it,' Mr Watt says.

Mr Watt explains that he and Michael Albers, flour milling expert from the Buhler Training Centre in Uzwil, Switzerland, saw deep interest by the participants during the hands-on milling experiences as they took the theory from the classroom and applied it in the mill.

Lambton’s biggest project of 2018

Lambton Conveyor Limited recently completed a feed-mill expansion project, the biggest of the year in Bangkok, Thailand. They provided over 400 pieces of equipment including bucket elevators, chain conveyors, screw conveyors and feeders, slide gates, diverter valves, butterfly valves, airlocks and pipe magnets and many more.

Lambton partnered with a long-time dealer in Bangkok to successfully complete the project. They contributed on site design and construction, while Lambton handled the manufacturing and equipment design. Lambton's engineering teams in Canada and China worked closely with the customer on all the aspects of this project from designing to final installation of all the equipment on site.

This new facility is next to their already existing feed mill and will handle multiple commodities like corn, soybean and soybean meal along with other feed ingredients.

the interview | Bernd große Holthaus, CEO of Ge-Pro

Bernd große Holthaus joined Ge-Pro in 1992 and has been dedicated to the animal meal industry for over 27 years. Ge-Pro’s various solutions for poultry meal, protein concentrates and feather meal have faithfully served the agriculture industry for many years, establishing their position as one of the largest producers of poultry meal in Europe.

What drove your own, unique passion, for the animal ingredients industry? How did you come to be involved in this industry?
I am the son of a family that has been active in agriculture and animal production for many generations. I have chosen the profession of the farmer myself because it is my affair to grow up with the diversity of nature and the environment and to develop it further.
So, I have come into this branch of the recovery of high-quality by-products, which are used today with versatility in the chain of sustainable food production.

What do you believe will be a big issue for the industry in the next five years, and what can we do to combat and resolve this issue?
A major problem is and will remain to be to convince the human and the consumer at the same time that the production of meat and other foods is the best and most sustainable way forward in Europe. Only together, in a united Europe, can we face the problems and cope with them.
Another big problem will be the bureaucracy of politics and administration in Europe. Here it has to be successful not to inflate but to dismantle those. The protection of the climate and the environment is also the highest priority for our industry.

Your company has a very rich history in animal ingredients and nutrition, and you clearly also hold a great deal of passion for this sector. How would you recommend young people get involved in this rewarding, and in some ways not very well advertised, industry?
We have been working in this industry since 1965 and have continuously developed ourselves. We have also further developed in the field of qualitative improvement of proteins and fats and further developed in the field of reduction of energy utilisation and better treatment of wastewater and residues.
Transforming the meaningful and sustainable recovery of by-products from food production into high-quality proteins and fats is the best advertisement for our business. We have no problems with junior staff, and we are happy about the lively interest in our company.

How much of your research is aimed at improving the health of livestock? How is this achieved?
Much of our investment goes into the continuous development of our products and production processes. A close and trusting cooperation and our customers and suppliers leads to ever higher quality products. To confirm this, we work very closely with universities and institutes.

What improvements do you think we will see in the upcoming years, that will help improve the feed industry- whether they be an alternative source of feed, or a new scientific breakthrough that could give feed a host of new benefits and refinements?
We already produce safe and sustainable products today. The non-use of these products in the food cycle would mean an irresponsible waste of resources. Ever more gentle manufacturing processes by, for example, air and spray drying, a better and more selective use and use of slaughter by-products result in better conditions of use in food production, but also in humanitarian use.

How important is the agriculture industry, in order for us to meet the protein needs for a growing global population?
Consumers need to be more involved with nature and available resources. There has to be a balance between the use of nature’s products, man and climate and environmental protection. Only when all this is sustainably coordinated, are we able to meet the growing demand.

Are your company working on any big project at the moment, that you think consumers would love to hear about?
Yes, we are constantly working to improve our products. This is the only way we have been able to offer more than 30 products from the original four products on the market today.
Further developments are being made in the direction of alternative proteins and hypoallergenic products, which further contribute to the health of the animals.

Bringing a new dimension to engineering

Note to self: Stop working for myself but work for the market. Stop turning inwards and confront the market. Face the competition. Start from this point each day.

That’s the philosophy of Nicola Reffo who goes on to say that successful companies in the Western world will have a positive and disproportionate impact on the livelihoods of those in poorer, transitional countries if they can “stay connected to the market.”

“The challenge for us in the West is to stay attached to the train so to speak, even although major crises occur we must keep our optimism that things will be better in the future.”

This does not sound like the approach of a major engineering company serving the animal feed industry, and which is one of just a handful of companies feed manufacturers rely upon for their pellet press rolls and dies. However, Nicola Reffo, a third-generation senior manager at La Meccanica in Cittadella, Italy is bringing another dimension to the running of the family business.

“Engineering has been traditional in our family, but I wanted to do something different so I went to university to study economics.”

When asked if that is an advantage in an engineering company, he says “Yes, it is. Especially when you have to consider the products you produce from the customers point-of-view and doubly so when your company relies heavily on the international market,” he says.

“The international side of our business is extremely important to us. 75-to-80 percent of our turnover is from the international market. This has always been so. We felt the need to step outside Italy right from the beginning.”

And that beginning was in 1961 when his grandfather, an engineer, formed the company in Cittadella, some 60km north-west of Venice. This company provided international services to the feed milling sector from the start. Its original factory is still providing those services to its international customers, while in the early 1970s a new factory was built which Milling and Grain visited in December last year.

Today, the company’s production is divided between three operation centres in and around Cittadella. The original site which is its smallest and is its ‘international service centre’ and was home to the original factory in 1961. In the early 1970s, the company build a new production unit on the southern outskirts of Cittadella which today does all its die and roll production in addition to equipment manufacturer and assembly.

Across the road from this main production faculty is the factory and service centre for the company’s Italian market.
