EnergyDecentral 2022 with innovative strategies and solutions for carbon farming

The targeted removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is regarded as a central approach for achieving greenhouse gas neutrality in the European Union by the year 2050. As well as the planned planting of forests, agricultural soils are playing an increasingly significant role as an important carbon sink in the climate protection debate, as they store around four times as much carbon as surface vegetation.

The objective of carbon farming is to improve the quality of arable soils, thus trapping more CO2 in the soil and counteracting climate change. Farmers who implement this concept in the long term add more carbon to their soils than they release – experts refer to this as negative emissions. Enrichment with biochar is considered to be one of the most important carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies in this context. At EnergyDecentral 2022, its potential will be discussed both at the stands and in the international technical programme.

Ecologically sound soils
Biochar is a solid with a high content of elementary carbon previously originating from atmospheric carbon dioxide that was absorbed by the plants during their growth phase. To produce it, organic material is carbonised with the aid of heat and pressure with the exclusion of oxygen. A large part of the carbon is thereby bound in molecular structures that remain stable in soils over a period of many centuries and are only released again very slowly. In the long term, around 30 to 50 percent of the carbon contained in plants could therefore be removed from the atmosphere.

According to a study conducted by the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP; German Foundation for Science and Politics), global application could bind between 0.5 and two billion tonnes of CO2 per annum, representing significant potential.

'There are millions of tonnes of timber in Germany's forests. Unused, they are exposed to the elements and therefore release carbon. This incredible volume could be processed to make very good biochar. Besides the necessary technical plants, we also need the backing and understanding of politicians as regards what biochar is really capable of in order to achieve this,' says Dr Susanne Veser, Chairwoman of the German Biochar Association.

Marcus Vagt, EnergyDecentral's Project Manager, also sees clear advantages for carbon farming. 'Effective climate protection demands the implementation of easily scalable processes for the targeted removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere. That is already possible today with biochar,' he confirms.

Depending on input and method, roughly 3.2 tonnes of CO₂ are stored per tonne of biochar. With respect to EnergyDecentral, it can be seen that biochar is being produced in efficient high-tech plants today. During carbonisation, called pyrolysis, plant residues such as green waste, waste wood or waste products from food production are thermally treated in a low-oxygen environment.

From biogenic residual substances to fuel
One example of this is thermo-catalytic reforming (TCR), which has been developed at the Fraunhofer UMSICHT Institute. In this process, the residual biomass is transformed into synthesis gas with a very high hydrogen content - up to 50 percent- carbonisate and pyrolysis oil with a petroleum-like consistency, which has a high calorific value and very low acid values and is comparable to vegetable oils. It can either be refined together with mineral crude oil in refineries known as co-processing or further processed on its own to form products such as petrol and diesel. The resulting products are climate-neutral. The energy required is generated from the residual substances used, with the result that hardly any CO2 emissions occur during the process.

The TCR technology has been developed for a containerised, compact plant design. It therefore represents a decentralised solution for recycling diverse types of biogenic residual substances. In a first stage, the biomass is gently broken down into biochar and volatile components in a screw reactor in the absence of oxygen at medium temperatures below 500 degrees Celsius. The formation of tar and other pollutants is prevented through optimised process conditions in the various reactor zones. In the second stage, the coal and vapours are catalytically refined at temperatures of up to 700 degree Celsius in a post-reformer in order to improve the gas yield and the product quality. The vapours are then cooled. During condensation, oil and process water are separated. The remaining gas is cleaned.

Optimising biogas plants with biochar
Depending on input material, the biochar or carbonisate that is produced in this way reveals a high content of nutrients and can be used, for instance, for fertiliser application. 'The carbonisate enables improved aeration and allows sandy soils to absorb water better,' explains Fabian Stenzel, head of the responsible department at Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Sulzbach-Rosenberg. The biochar can be spread on arable land in pulverised form, where it acts as a vehicle for nutrients and provides a habitat for microorganisms. The new EU fertilising product regulation that came into effect in mid-July 2022 is also likely to ensure additional momentum in agricultural use. Alongside chemically untreated wood, it also permits additional output materials for biochar. Marcus Vagt welcomes these adjustments, stating 'This change makes an important contribution to cycle-based decarbonisation, because it enables farmers as well as food and feed producers or other industries that generate biomass to transform their residues into a CO2 store.'

Biochar can also be put to economically and ecologically beneficial use in biogas plants, for example, prior to its ultimate function as a soil improver. Firstly, its spongy structure offers a very good surface for bacterial colonisation – and more bacteria lead to more turnover in the process as a whole and therefore to more biogas. Secondly, biochar is able to adsorb pollutants due to its surface properties. The background to this is that an excessively high ammonium concentration inhibits the activity of the microorganisms that produce methane in the fermenter. Biochar effectively binds ammonium, with the result that more methane can be obtained from the substrate. Later on, the ammonia nitrogen is available again with the biochar in the digestate fertiliser, as it is washed out less extensively. The gas yield can be increased by up to ten percent depending on biochar type, grain size and output materials.

Carbon farming on the advance
As one of the most important methods of fostering sustainable agriculture, carbon farming is now also increasingly shifting into the focus of the European Union. The E.U. launched its carbon farming initiative, with which previously completed pilot projects are to be extended throughout the entire E.U., back in December 2021. The E.U. is intending to introduce a corresponding regulation by the end of 2022. The aim is to encourage farmers to change their working practices and to use carbon-rich fertilisers as well as cultivating crops and trees that are able to absorb more CO2 from the atmosphere. Farmers who are operating sustainably would therefore be given an incentive to use carbon farming as a business model – and could sell emissions certificates for the amount of carbon that they bind in their land. But which specific measures are suitable for binding carbon in the soil and forming humus? How can the effects be documented in terms of CO2 certificate trading?

EnergyDecentral 2022 aims to provide the answers to these questions in its expert talks. Verification specialist BELOW2, an organisation that is concentrated on documenting and reviewing CO2 offsetting projects according to strict scientific standards and therefore offers climate protection solutions that solely evaluate the CO2 effect, will also be taking part. 'Together with customers, we define which projects best match their compensation objective. In close coordination, we then develop specific proposals for an individually tailored strategy and evaluate this in terms of cost-effectiveness and the degree of CO2 reduction,' explains Oliver T. Hellriegel, one of the three founders of BELOW2. For Hellriegel, one of the central drivers in the scientific analysis of technological CO2 avoidance or sink projects is the vast potential slumbering in the domestic farming industry. He is convinced that the region also needs to play a central role in compensation in addition to transparency and protection against falsification. 'Improved fertilisation methods, accessing renewable energies and the use of alternative cultivation and harvesting methods are putting agriculture at the forefront of the climate change movement although it hasn't been talked about a great deal so far,' Mr says Hellriegel. ISHI gathers in Zurich for the first time since 2020

The International Seed Health Initiative (ISHI) group gathered in Zurich, Switzerland on 12-16 September 2022 for its first annual technical meeting since February 2020. A total of 55 ISHI members from all over the world, three members of the Coordination Group Seed Health, and the Seed Health team of the ISF Secretariat participated in this ISHI technical event.

It was a unique opportunity to engage, learn and progress on the various seed health-related projects under this initiative. From drafting guidelines to perform comparative tests, as well as upgrading processes, learning, and discussing new technologies, the first day set the tone for an intense week. Further sessions allowed members to get updates from the 11 countries representing the ISHI community and from the ISF Secretariat. ISF Secretary General Michael Keller gave an insightful speech on the importance of seed health in ensuring seed movement around the world to farmers and to reach food security globally. A specific workshop gave the opportunity to brainstorm on a specific topic of interest to all members and work in a dynamic manner. Additionally, members of the international technical groups (ITGs) were able to focus on progressing and planning the work ahead on current projects. The week closed with a special presentation by Prof. Sébastien Massart, University of Liège-Belgium, on high throughput sequencing and the opportunities and challenges this technique has to offer in seed health diagnostics.

Overall, this event offered to ISHI members a valuable forum to share ideas, make decisions, and build team relationships. The group is set to meet again next year in the United States.

Trinity AgTech grows technical farm support team

Agri-tech veterans, Scott Millar and Louise Rix, have joined Trinity AgTech in farmer-facing roles as customer success managers.
Both coming from agri-tech businesses, their new positions will see them support new and existing farm customers to measure and optimise their natural capital assets using Trinity AgTech's smart natural capital navigator, Sandy.

As a gateway between Trinity's products and services and the end user, their cross-sector agricultural expertise means improved, tailored support for farmers who are looking to build their business resilience, profitability and sustainability. 

Mr Millar has spent a decade working in business development, and hails from rural roots, having graduated from Hartpury University with a degree in agriculture and land management. He will be supporting Trinity's livestock and dairy customers in his new role.

Wheat mill ends pneumatic conveying line blowouts with deflection elbows

Lehi Mills is famous not only for 100 plus years of flour production, but also for being the backdrop of the 1984 cult film 'Footloose' in which actor Kevin Bacon fights a ban on dancing instituted by a staid local minister. Recently, the mill experienced a different kind of fight―this time against blowouts in its pneumatic pipeline elbows.

The mill processes roughly 50 tonnes (45 tons) of flour per day for bread flour, baking flour, whole wheat flour, and its own line of pre-blended mixes for desserts, waffles and pancakes. Founded in 1906 as a family-run enterprise, the mill still occupies its original building.

A dilute phase pneumatic conveying system was specified to move dry and tempered wheat throughout the process within the historic plant's height restrictions, but the mill staff soon noticed signs of erosion in the system's sweep elbows. 

"Abrasive, fast-moving grain was causing frequent blowouts, requiring the mill to shut down every few months," explains Todd Berry, mill superintendent and director of quality control.

Incoming dry wheat is pneumatically conveyed through separators, sifters, aspirators and washers that filter out foreign material and remove impurities. The dry wheat line runs 7.6 m (25 ft) horizontally, 17 m (55 ft) vertically, and includes two 90 degree bends.

Mr Berry noted that erosion in the dry wheat line's two sweep elbows began almost immediately, and that it worsened as the wheat grain, travelling at high speed through the circuit, generated heat and friction due to impacting the elbows' outside radius. 'The wheat ate through the sweep elbows and eventually just shot out the side,' says Mr Berry. 'We tried a heavier elbow, but within weeks the wheat ate through that one, too.' 

Circuitous routing on the pneumatic line conveying tempered wheat included a high number of sweep elbows. This compounded the problem by creating more opportunities for blowouts to occur in the numerous elbows.  

Mr Berry says the tempered wheat line initially employed six sweep elbows at various angles to convey the tempered wheat to a holding bin which allows time for the moisture to soak into the wheat before milling. Over time, however, the abrasive wheat wore through the sweep elbows, even after steel backing plates were welded onto them.

To reduce shutdowns due to elbow failure, Lehi Mills re-configured the tempered wheat line, reducing the number of bends, and installed Smart Elbow® deflection elbows in lieu of conventional sweep elbows in both lines.  

Unlike sweep elbows, in which material impacts the outside radius at high speed to change direction, the Smart Elbow design incorporates a spherical vortex chamber that extends partially beyond the flow path around the bend. Within this chamber, the airflow creates a ball of material that rotates in the same direction as the airstream, acting as a buffer to gently deflect and redirect the incoming wheat around the bend without impacting the elbow wall.

The mill reports that no blowouts have occurred as of this writing, since two deflection elbows were installed on each of the dry and the tempered wheat circuits.

'Before the HammerTek elbows, the abrasive wheat would just eat through the elbows regardless of what we did,' Mr Berry says. 'I'm glad that we found the deflection elbows. They've made my life easier.'

Negotiations on an enhanced multilateral system for access and benefit sharing of genetic resources to restart after GB9


Seed sector reiterates its support to the Treaty on conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.

The 9th session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA / the Treaty) held in New Delhi on 19-24 September concluded with an agreement by the parties to restart discussions on enhancing the functioning of the Multilateral System of the Treaty and the implementation of Article 9 of the Treaty which addresses Farmers’ Rights.

At the opening ceremony Santosh Attavar, First Vice President of the International Seed Federation, said: “Today there are more than 700 million people living in extreme poverty, starkly illustrating that we need to continue to strengthen our collaboration on food systems towards a healthier, more sustainable, equitable and resilient seed production and food systems. We are convinced that this can be achieved through continued cooperation among the farmers, the private sector and the public seed sector and we are convinced that the International Treaty is the most suitable tool to ensure facilitated access and benefit sharing of genetic resources, which are critical in ensuring food and nutritional security.”

During the past round of negotiations which failed in 2019, the seed sector made important, practicable proposals to improve the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA) and supported the full expansion of the list of crops in Annex 1 of the Treaty.  ISF supported proposals for a workable subscription system to complement single access mechanisms as a means to increase the number of potential users and user-based payments. The seed sector remains willing to work with the Parties to find effective solutions for a comprehensive and meaningful enhancement of the Multilateral System, and strongly believes that the Multilateral System of the Treaty is the best means of handling Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) related to plant breeding.

On Farmers’ Rights discussions, the seed sector emphasized the closely intertwined, complementary and mutually supportive relationship between Farmers’ Rights and Breeders’ Rights to support agricultural development. The private seed sector advocates that farmers must have the right to access the best varieties available, at the right time, right place, and right quantity. At the same time, optimising access to a wide range of plant genetic resources is essential for plant breeders to develop improved varieties that boost farmers’ crop productivity and address the impact of climate change and other challenges, to attain sustainable food production and food security. ISF strongly supports policies that create incentives for breeders to access genetic resources, invest in making improvements, and making improved germplasm available to farmers who choose to buy it.

The seed sector welcomes the initiative of the Treaty to develop a mechanism for assessing the value of the non-monetary benefit sharing contributions, which continue to be substantial but have so far been mostly neglected in the discussions related with Funding Strategy and Resource Mobilisation.

Further, ISF urged the Parties to create the Treaty’s own path forward on Digital Sequence Information / Genetic Sequence Data on genetic resources (DSI/GSD), in a manner consistent with the CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity), while allowing the enhancement of the Multilateral System and facilitating research and plant breeding.

ISF commended the monetary donation made by its member, the Federation of Seed Industry of India (FSII), towards supporting the work of the Benefit Sharing Fund.

Dr Arvind Kapur, Vice Chairman, FSII said, “We would like to donate INR 20 lakh (USD 25000) as an addition to the other financial contributions regularly made by the seed sector globally. However, I would like to highlight that the non-financial contributions of the seed sector towards food security are many times greater and critically impactful towards food security.”

The ITPGRFA is a specialised international regime designed to facilitate the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture i.e., germplasm, and generate fair and equitable benefit sharing resulting from seed sales based on use. The ITPGRFA is harmonised with international regimes that support conservation, sustainable use and fair and equitable benefit sharing for all organisms, specifically the CBD and the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit sharing.

Since 1971, the Packaging & Processing Hall of Fame has recognized career packaging and processing professionals for their significant contributions to the industry and education. Besides Pierre, this year's honourees are Jean-Jacques Graffin, Rebecca Oesterle, and E. Jeffrey Rhodehamel.

Great atmosphere at the heart of VICTAM Asia, Health & Nutrition Asia and GRAPAS Asia 2022



VICTAM Corporation and VIV worldwide welcomed exhibitors and visitors from September 7 – 9, 2022 at the IMPACT Bangkok, Thailand for the events Victam Asia, Health & Nutrition Asia and GRAPAS Asia. The three co-located trade fairs focused on animal feed, animal health and nutrition, and the grain and rice processing industries.

“It was exciting to be back in Asia again after the Covid pandemic. The atmosphere at the event was excellent as exhibitors and visitors were glad to be participating at a live event again,” says general manager of the Victam Corporation, Sebas van den Ende. “We were happy to finally welcome all these companies and professionals. A few exhibitors were not able to participate due to the strict Covid rules in their countries, but we provided them with a hybrid platform so they were able to participate online. The participating exhibitors attended with exciting stands, machinery, and innovations.”
 
“This was a great opportunity for the feed and animal health industry to meet in 2022. The exhibition halls were busy over the three event days, with the top 10 visiting countries being Thailand, India, Philippines, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, Myanmar, and Singapore,” said Birgit Horn, Managing Director VIV worldwide.
 
Visitors and press were pleased with the extensive range of products on display, especially the newly launched products, the high quality of the exhibition stands and the great networking opportunities onsite. There were 231 exhibitors from 33 countries present.
 
Likewise, the exhibitors were very satisfied with the visitors. The companies stated that it was great to meet their clients and prospects face-to-face again. The exhibitors also commented on the very high quality of the visitors and the wide range of countries from which they came.
 
Spread over the three show days, there were 6.121 visitors from 64 countries. 90.4 percent of the visitors were from Asia and 9.6 percent of the visitors were international visitors (EMEA, America’s, Oceania).
 
A VIP tour and luncheon were organized at the opening day with key Asian buyers, institutions representatives and local authorities; while a delegation of Korean professionals joined on the second day. On the last day, the show organizers welcomed the management teams of CPF, Betagro, Centaco, Thai Food Group, Thai Vegetable Oil and more.
 
The organizers of VICTAM Asia and Health & Nutrition Asia were proud to host several conferences and meetings with the cooperation of key industry partners, among which: AFFIA, Aquafeed.com, GMP+, GRAPAS Innovation Seminars, the Thai Feed Mill Association, WPSA, and many others.
 
The different conference organizers stated that the delegate attendance was good and that the delegates have appreciated the quality of both the speakers and their papers.
 
Additionally, several exhibitors like Amandus Kahl, Bioproton, Bühler Group, Clextral, DSM, Evonik, Grain Technik, J E S Innovative, Kanters, Premiertech, and Proteon presented technical seminars during the three show days.
 
During the event both the Victam Corporation and VIV worldwide announced their upcoming events respectively.
