NOAH comment on the Government response to the GB Veterinary Medicines Regulation

February 2, 2024 - NOAH say they welcome the publication of the Government response to the consultation on the new GB Veterinary Medicines Regulation and look forward to this vital piece of legislation being adopted. The UK animal health industry needs a robust, up-to-date regulatory process to produce the veterinary medicines necessary to protect and improve animal health and welfare in the UK.

This not only benefits animals, but also helps to protect human and environmental health while positively contributing to societal sustainability goals.

Dawn Howard, NOAH's Chief Executive said: "It is good to see that, in a number of key areas that we felt would adversely impact health and welfare, Government has listened and responded to stakeholder concerns. For example, we welcome the modifications made to the labelling requirement proposals for veterinary medicines and that POM-V medicines other than antimicrobials can continue to be advertised to professional keepers of animals.

"We look forward to reviewing the detail and commend the hard work that has been done to bring this about."

Omas Industries announces expansion into UK and Northern Europe

February 1, 2024 - Omas Industries, the Italian company specializing in machinery and plants for the milling industry based in San Giorgio delle Pertiche, Padua, is excited to announce its entry into UK and Northern Europe market. This strategic move comes at a time of remarkable growth, with the company experiencing a consistent increase in orders and pursuing an ambitious hiring plan to strengthen its international presence.

Omas Industries stands as one of the few Italian companies operating in the milling industry. The newly formed entity, “Omas Northern Europe”, will be spearheaded by Peter Marriott, former Sales Manager EMEA of a leading global manufacturer of equipment for the rice, wheat, and corn industry, with over 30 years industry Experience.

“I am very honoured that such a remarkable and experienced milling expert like Peter chose Omas and I’m sure that he will contribute to promote our technologies and presence in the market, providing support to the customers”, said Pietro Barbalarga, Sales Director of Omas Industries. This expansion decision reflects a bold step in line with the growing market demand for innovative solutions in the grain milling sector. Now more than ever, the industry requires efficient and flexible production through the adoption of automation and digitalization processes within the facility. This translates into increased energy efficiency, improved production quality, energy savings, and waste prevention. Notably, this vision aims to modernise a traditionally conservative sector, leading to a smart factory capable of providing technological advances to customers around the world.

Luigi Nalon, CEO of Omas Industries, states: “The milling industry must embrace new production methods and products, making it easier to adapt to changes in consumer lifestyle, achieving global goals of carbon reduction and protecting the environment”. “It is a great pleasure for me to join Omas” comments Peter Marriott, the new General Manager of Omas Northern Europe “I was deeply impressed by Omas’ technologies, especially the Flexy Mill, which allows the modification of different parameters during the grinding process, adapting the mill to various types of grains and legumes without compromising performances and product quality. Thanks to permanent magnet torque motors, the miller can increase or decrease the peripheral speed of both grinding rollers, change the grinding ratio and the rollers’ operating position, adjust the grinding gap, create recipes, and more. DLG quality seal for farm inputs: Register new products for the 2024 tests now

February 1, 2024 - Quality-conscious companies use the independent and practical control of the DLG (German Agricultural Society) for their products to show their customers that they can trust their products. The DLG Test Center Technology and Farm Inputs offers manufacturers and distributors the opportunity to take part in the 2024 quality tests for farm inputs with new products. Products that pass the extensive expert tests receive the DLG quality seal, the renowned industry award for above-average product quality.

The quality tests carried out by the DLG experts are based on test criteria of high practical relevance. The test frameworks on which the tests are conducted are drawn up for each product group by neutral and independent test commissions consisting of experts from agriculture, science and consultancy and cover all value-determining characteristics of the respective product group. The effectiveness is analysed in the laboratory and in practice, as is any possible negative impact on animals and/or stable facilities, which must be ruled out. The consistently high quality of the tested products is ensured by annually recurring control tests.

"The DLG quality seal has an outstanding reputation in agricltural practice," says Dr Michael Eise, Project Manager at the DLG Test Center Technology and Farm Inputs. "Our test criteria are regularly updated and reflect the current requirements for the respective farm inputs. Thanks to our efficient and regular inspections, companies have the opportunity to position themselves precisely in the market and the 'DLG quality seal' guarantees an excellent product quality when agricultural investment decisions are to be made."

MFA Incorporated's Aurora Mill named 2023 Commercial Feed Facility of the Year

February 1, 2024 - The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) and Feedstuffs named MFA Incorporated's Aurora Mill as its 2023 Commercial Dry Fed Facility of the Year. Gary Huddleston, AFIA's director of feed manufacturing and regulatory affairs, presented Trevor Erwin, plant manager, with the award today during the AFIA's Feed Education Program, happening in conjunction with the International Production & Processing Expo this week in Atlanta, Ga.

MFA Incorporated's Aurora Mill wins the 2023 AFIA Commercial Dry Feed Facility of the Year (Left to Right: Carlos Gonzalez, Ph.D., AFIA Board chair; Sarah Muirhead, Feedstuffs' editor, Trevor Erwin, Aurora Mills' plant manager; and Gary Huddleston, AFIA's director of feed manufacturing and regulatory affairs)

"We take great pleasure in acknowledging those commercial dry facilities that exceed expectations in their commitment to ensuring safe and efficient operations," said Gary Huddleston, AFIA's director of feed manufacturing and regulatory affairs, "The MFA Incorporated's Aurora facility is an interesting mix of old and new and demonstrates how facilities can evolve over time and adjust to the needs of a changing industry."

MFA Incorporated built Aurora Mills' south tower in the 1960s and the north tower in 1999. Over the years, the adjoining towers' processes have become more automated, and the south tower installed newer equipment. The facility is a multi-species mill that is approved to manufacture medicated feed and is Safe Feed/Safe Food certified. The feed mill produces about 40,000 tons of feed annually, which can be accredited to its three pelleting systems and the newest addition of a pellet cooler with increased capacity and quality.

The AFIA has been recognising excellent feed manufacturing facilities through the Feed Mill of the Year program since 1985. Beginning in 2016, the program expanded to the Feed Facility of the Year and began offering awards for an overall winner and four category winners. In 2021, the FFY program separated each category into its own individual program: liquid feed, commercial dry, premix and ingredient, and integrator, with each category having its own facility of the year award.

The semi-finalists for AFIA's 2023 Commercial Feed Facility of the Year award are Kent Nutrition Group of Logansport, Ind, and Marshall, Mo, and Western Milling of Goshen, Calif.

The 17th International Feed Regulators Meeting

February 1, 2024 - The 17th annual International Feed Regulators Meeting (IFRM) organised by the International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) brought together feed industry representatives and government officials from around the world to discuss critical issues facing the feed sector with IFIF and the FAO.

At the meeting Ruud Tijssens, IFIF Chairman and Daniela Battaglia, FAO, welcomed IFRM delegates and reiterated their commitment to this longstanding partnership and agreed to continue to strengthen their work together to tackle the challenges facing the feed and food chains. Ms Battaglia reaffirmed the importance of "collaboration between the public and private sector to address the responsibilities of the livestock and feed sectors in a context of the sustainable transformation of agri-food systems worldwide."

Mr Tijssens highlighted the great importance of this meeting both for industry and government regulators: "It is remarkable to see what has been achieved over the years with this co-operation: for example, unique public-private voluntary guidelines on assessment of feed ingredients by ICCF, as well as important science-based work on nutritional solutions with the objective to reduce the need for antibiotics, which has been developed to make adequate legislation possible."

Mr Tijssens added "important subjects like circular fed and novel ingredients were addressed, and through dialogue the wisdom of the delegates was mobilised, bot from legislators from different countries, scientists and industry partners. We believe that only by working together can we continue to ensure feed and food security and safety, while meeting the global demands for food sustainably."

"The success of this meeting is a proof that FAO's efforts to facilitate dialogue between the public and private sector are worthwhile and given the current challenges, collaborating among all parties at international and national level to ensure among others, human and animal health and welfare, and feed to food safety and security is more important than ever,"said Daniela Battaglia, Animal Production Officer, Animal Production and Health Division of the FAO.

Ms Battaglia added "feed operators can valuably contribute to make the animal production and food sectors more responsible and sustainable and to achieve other important goals such as the containment of antimicrobial resistance and public, animal and environmental health. The IFRM is an important opportunity to exchange ideas among stakeholders from around the world and to coordinate our efforts towards common goals."

Other topics discussed at the 17th IFRM included a workshop on the safe use of circular feed sources, as well as presentations on feed regulatory updates from Ghana and the European Commission.
