OSU wheat varieties are the most planted in Oklahoma

April 4, 2024 - The top seven wheat varieties planted in Oklahoma in 2024 were developed at Oklahoma State University, according to the USDA-National Agricultural Statistics Service's annual report. This is the 10th consecutive year that OSU varieties have ranked in the top seven varieties planted statewide.

"The adoption of OSU wheat varieties across the state highlights the value that the OSU Wheat Improvement Team brings to the industry," said Wade Thomason, head of the OSU Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. "Dr Brett Carver's pursuit of excellence generates varieties that provide the highest level of performance while thriving in Oklahoma's challenging environment. As a public breeding program, OSU can focus on the needs of the Oklahoma wheat grower and deliver varieties that provide the most value now and into the future."

Doublestop CL Plus remains the most planted wheat variety in the state for the third consecutive year and has been a top three variety since 2019. Smith's Gold has remained in the top four since 2020, moving up to the third most planted variety in 2024.

The following OSU wheat varieties are the top seven planted varieties in the state in 2024:

  • Doublestop CL Plus at 9.6 percent of seeded acres identified by name - up from 8.5 percent in 2023
  • Green Hammer at 7 percent - up from 5.3 percent
  • Smith's Gold at 6.6 percent
  • Gallagher at 5.1 percent
  • Showdown at 3.3 percent - up from 2.1 percent
  • Endurance at 3.3 percent - up from 2.1 percent
  • OK Corral at 2.1 percent - up from 1.6 percent

OSU varieties Iba, Strad CL Plus, Bentley, Uncharted, OK Bullet, Butler's Gold, Duster and Garrison were also planted in Oklahoma this year.

"As producers find more efficient ways to manage operations, they look at varieties that have good yield characteristics and strong disease resistance. The OSU wheat research team also places strong emphasis on these attributes," said Mike Schulte, executive director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission. "These key components and mainstay attributes continue to be important when giving producers choices for making variety selection decisions."

In 2023, the OSU Wheat Improvement Team released a new variety called High Cotton, a dual-purpose wheat that has broad disease resistance and significantly raises yield. The variety was released to seed producers in summer 2023 with limited commercial grain production expected to begin in fall 2024.

Sudan receives second batch of Ukrainian flour under the Grain from Ukraine initiative

April 4, 2024 - The MV Future ID vessel has arrived in Sudan with 14.6 thousand tonnes of flour milled from Ukrainian wheat. This is the second consignment of humanitarian aid under President Zelenskyy's Grain from Ukraine initiative, which was sent to Sudan by the World Food Programme (WFP).

The first batch of humanitarian aid was delivered to the port of Khartoum (Sudan) on 22 February 2024. The MV Ocean Dream brought 7.665 tonnes of flour made from Ukrainian wheat.

The donors of the two shipments were Germany, which provided US$ 15 million, as well as Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, Slovenia and Spain, which financed the second shipment of flour in the amount of US$ 23.8 million.

The flour made from Ukrainian wheat will be distributed by WFP as part of food packages for 2 million people in Sudan affected by the war.

Almost 18 million people in Sudan are currently facing acute food shortages. According to the UN, about 5 million of them are in a state of extreme hunger (IPC4).

The harvest of staple crops (sorghum, millet and wheat) is 41 percent below the average over the past 5 years.

Therefore, food aid through the Grain from Ukraine initiative is extremely important to save lives and prevent an even worse situation.

The Newt in Somerset, working with McArthur BDC, will process heritage wheat to produce home-grown flour

April 3, 2024 - Part of the Newt Estate, The Newt in Somerset, one of the world's best boutique hotels, aims to supply its restaurants with ingredients grown, foraged and reared on the Estate. The processing of Estate grown heritage wheat will enable home-grown flour to become a valuable additional ingredient.

"As well as Einkorn and Emmer heritage wheat, we grow feed wheat and barley for our 400 pedigree British White cows, of which we are very proud as it is the biggest pedigree British White herd in the world, our 350 pedigree Dorset Down ewes and our herds of Red and Fallow Deer," explained Cameron Knee, the Newt Estate's farm manager.

To process the heritage wheat the Newt Estate's project manager, Ed White, was looking for a dehulling plant and already negotiating with a provider of post-harvest equipment, when a neighbouring farmer recommended that he talk to McArthur BDC.

White met with McArthur BDC at Groundswell and was so impressed with its range of JK Machinery cleaners, classifiers and dehullers, he asked Cameron Knee to have a follow-up meeting at the LAMMA show.

Realisation by both White and Knee that McArthur BDC could deliver a more compact and cost-effective solution, resulted in McArthur BDC working closely with the Newt Estate, to design a processing plant to meet the Estate's requirements.

A JK Machinery JCC05 VibroCompact sieve cleaner, with the capacity for a quick pre-clean of up to 6tph or 1.5tph for a detailed clean, was installed to clean the wheat and prevent harmful material entering a JK Machinery JHC03 Compact Dehuller. The JHC03 has the capacity, depending on the grain, to dehull between 400kg/h and 1tph.

"As we are dehulling wheat, the JHC03 was our preferred machine as it uses impact to dehull rather than grinding. This is important when dehulling pointed-shaped crops, such as wheat and barley," explained Knee.

The grain is transported from the sieve cleaner to the dehuller via two Astwell augers, each with a capacity of up to 3tph.

Both the sieve cleaner and the dehuller are fitted with aspirators and to ensure cost-efficiency, both operate with the same fan and cyclone.

Once the wheat has been dehulled it again passes through the sieve cleaner, removing any remaining whole grains or husks not removed by the aspirator. The grain is then ready for milling and is discharged from the JCC05 sieve cleaner into 1t bags.

"Our local miller operates a stone mill which means he has exacting standards around the quality of the grain he is happy to mill. The McArthur BDC cleaning and dehulling system has meant that we have been able to not only meet his standards but exceed them, and he can't wait to get his hands on some more!" continued Knee.

The current system delivering the ability to clean and dehull its heritage wheat on-farm is just the start of the Newt Estate's journey to add flour to the list of Estate-grown ingredients used in its restaurants' kitchens.

In around 18 months' time the existing processing plant will be moved to a specifically designed building and the Newt Estate will be making decisions around how to increase its cleaning and dehulling capability.

"Working with McArthur BDC, which has designed a plant that meets our existing requirements with a cost-effective solution that is simple to operate, we will be looking at potentially installing JK Machinery equipment with a larger capacity and the features and functionality to further reduce impurities within the grain," added Knee.

"For any farming business looking at installing a grain processing plant, I cannot overestimate the importance of getting your preferred supplier to carry out a site visit to make sure that the design works within the available space," continued Knee.

Knee also advises that you get a good electrician onboard from the start. It is important that he, or she, is comfortable working with grain handling equipment and can interpret specifications and drawings.

"Plus, you need to engage with a supplier that has a proven track record in successfully delivering grain processing plants. McArthur BDC fits that bill and with its team of grain handling experts, I would recommend that you talk to them first!" said Knee.

Livestock Philippines and Aquaculture Philippines 2024 to help push the subsection's development

April 3, 2024 - The country's premier trade event for the Philippine livestock, poultry, and aquaculture industries will opens its gates to the public from May 22 to 24 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

With the theme 'Harnessing Innovation and Technology for Sustainable Farm Development," this year's edition of Livestock Philippines and Aquaculture Philippines aims to bridge the activities of public and private sectors, establish business opportunities for manufacturers and suppliers with potential distributors, partners and buyers and create an environment of knowledge and expertise sharing.

"The livestock and aquaculture subsections of the country's agriculture industry are pivotal growth drivers of the economy and a generator of jobs. And by bringing together actors and stakeholders in those subsectors through Livestock Philoppines and Aquaculture Philippines, we can level up the production and efficiency of those subsectors to become major drivers of economic growth and poverty reduction," said Ms Rungphench Chitanuwat, the Country General Manager of Informa Markets in the Philippines.

This year's Livestock Philoppines and Aquaculture Philippines will feature at least 250 exhibitors and more than 10,000 visitors are expected to troop to the three-day event. Visitors from at least 30 countries are anticipated to attend the trade show, making it international in scope. Furthermore, the ongoing success of the events is attributed to the valuable support from partner industry associations. Key show highlights

Before the three-day event in May, the Livestock Philippines and Aquaculture Philippines organisers conduct provincial roadshows in Pampanga, Batangas and Cebu. These roadshows aim to engage with the community and bring together practitioners and stakeholders for an educational seminar that would be beneficial for all involved. The team will continue the last leg of the roadshow in the aquaculture and swine sectors in Pampanga on May 8-9, 2024.

This year also marks the return of the Livestock Awards, recognising and acknowledging the remarkable and substantial contributions made by individuals, groups, associations, cooperatives or private companies to the development of the agriculture sector. 

Another must-see show highlight is the nationwide launch of Bidang Egg Kids in the afternoon of May 22. This project, led by the Batangas Egg Producers Cooperative, private egg sectors, and agricultural organizations, aims to combat protein malnutrition in Filipino children.

As a Learning Hub for the Industry

Livestock Philippines and Aquaculture Philippines offer meticulously curated content through extensive seminars and conferences featuring industry experts discussing relevant topics. The three-day event will include almost 50 technical workshops and seminar sessions. On May 23, the highly awaited Aquaculture Conference will return, hosting a day of educational talks focusing on the aquaculture sector. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, along with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center/Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) and partner aquaculture associations, commit to providing informative discussions for attendees.

Livestock Philippines and Aquaculture Philippines remain steadfast in their commitment to promoting sustainability by incorporating content that aligns with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These goals serve as a global initiative to end poverty, combat hunger, preserve the environment, and work towards a more sustainable future for everyone. According to statistics from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), livestock production in the country saw a growth of 2.7% in the final quarter of 2023, reaching P71.1 billion. Concurrently, poultry production rose by 7.8%, totaling P67.65 billion. Contrastingly, domestic aquaculture was the sole subsector within the fishery industry that demonstrated growth in 2023, increasing by 1.5% annually to 2.38 million metric tons. The PSA highlighted that aquaculture accounted for the largest share, comprising 56% of the total fisheries production in 2023.

2024 Alltech Agri-Food Outlook shares global feed production survey data and influential trends in agriculture

April 2, 2024 - Global animal feed production remained steady in 2023 at 1.29 billion metric tonnes (BMT), a slight decrease of 2.6 million metric tonnes (MMT) - or 0.2 percent - from 2022's estimates, according to the 2024 Agri-Food Outlook, released today by Alltech. The annual survey, now in its 13th year, includes data from 142 countries and more than 27,000 feed mills.

The overall lower demand for feed was due, in part, to the more efficient use of feed made possible by intensive production systems that focus on using animal nutrition, farm management and other technologies to lower feed intake while producing the same amount of protein, or more. A slowdown in the overall production of animal protein, in response to tight margins experienced by many feed and animal protein companies, also contributed to lower feed demand. Changing consumption patterns caused by inflation and dietary trends, higher production costs and geopolitical tensions also influenced feed production in 2023.

Top 10 countries:

The top 10 feed-producing countries are China (262.71 MMT, +0.76%), the U.S. (238.09 MMT, ‑1.13%), Brazil (83.32 MMT, +1.84%), India (52.83 MMT, +13.43%), Mexico (40.42 MMT, +0.02%), Russia (35.46 MMT, +3.83%), Spain (27.53 MMT, -11.88%), Vietnam (24.15 MMT, -9.63%), Japan (23.94 MMT, -1.15%) and Türkiye (23.37 MMT, -11.48%). Together, the top 10 countries produced 63.1 percent of the world's feed production (same as in 2022), and almost half of the world's global feed production is concentrated in four countries: China, the US, Brazil and India.

Notable species results and outlook:

Poultry experienced an increase in broiler feed production (385.04 MMT, +13.10 MMT, +3.5%) and remained steady with a slight increase for layers (170.88 MMT, +0.01 MMT, 0%).

  • Broiler feed now accounts for 29.9 percent of the total feed tonnage in the world thanks to a 3.5 percent increase in overall tonnage in 2023. While this growth was not uniform across all regions, the poultry sector is poised to keep holding strong in 2024 thanks to a combination of regional success and global market dynamics. Some of the biggest factors that will contribute to the resilience of the broiler sector include reduced costs for inputs, such as feed and energy, and increases in margins and profitability.
  • For layers, there are industry-wide efforts to optimise feed efficiency and to keep pace with changing dietary trends and new purchasing power. Some markets around the globe were significantly impacted by macroeconomic challenges and disease outbreaks, which can disrupt production cycles. Still, the general outlook for the layer industry remains positive thanks to its resilience in the face of difficult circumstances, when other protein sectors often struggle to adapt.
  • The poultry sector is poised for continued strength, driven by a blend of regional successes and global market dynamics. The broiler forecast remains optimistic thanks to lower input costs, increased industrial margins and shifting consumer behaviours. For layers, challenges persist, but there are pockets of resilience and growth.

The global pig feed production sector faced many challenges in 2023, which led to an overall decrease in pig feed production of 1.23% (320.80 MMT, -4.01 MMT).

  • Latin America stood out as the only region that achieved an increase in pig feed production in 2023, while Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America - which have traditionally been the top pig feed-producing regions in the world - all faced challenges. African swine fever (ASF) continues to wreak havoc on pig production in China and Southeast Asia, were repopulation efforts are slowly proceeding.
  • The trends highlight the complex relationship between economic factors, supply dynamic and disease management in the global pig feed industry. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for sustaining animal agriculture and ensuring food security.

Dairy feed tonnage decreased by 2.3 percent (126.23 MMT, -2.28%), primarily due to the high cost of feed combined with low milk prices, which led farmers to make strategic adjustments that include reducing their cow numbers and/or relying more on non-commercial feed sources.

  • In Europe, dairy producers will continue to grapple with stricter environmental policies in the years ahead, and they will need to find new ways to continue growing.
  • Asia-Pacific managed to buck the downward trend and emerged as the only region that increased its dairy feed tonnage in 2023. This growth was fuelled by a continued increase in the consumption of milk products there, as well as an expansion of feed production in co-operatives.
  • This shift reflects the delicate balance between economic factors and the need to sustain dairy production. Lower feed costs and higher milk prices would help right the ship.

Beef feed production decreased by 4.36% (117.49 MMT, -5.35 MMT) globally - the most pronounced downward change among all species sectors last year. Changes in cattle cycles in the United States and stricter sustainability policies in Europe had major impacts, with the Asia-Pacific beef sector notably surpassing Europe's in 2023.

  • The substantial decline in North America was the result of lingering droughts and high production costs, among other issues.
  • While the European and North American beef industries are expected to continue declining in 2024, growth is expected in China, Brazil and Australia - highlighting the complex dynamics and landscape of beef feed production around the world.

The aquaculture sector experienced a decline of 4.4% (52.09 MMT, -2.42 MMT).

  • This decline was driven in part by a significant drop in China's supply of aquafeed due to the lower fish prices, which had a far-reaching impact.
  • Latin America grew by 0.27 MMT (3.87%). Despite adverse weather conditions in that region, the demand for aqua products is still strong in Latin America, which helped aqua producers there remain resilient.

The global pet feed industry continues to grow, albeit at a slower pace of (34.96 MMT, +0.26 MMT) in 2023. Demand for high-quality pet products and services remains high from pet owners who want only the best for their animal companions.

  • The Latin American and North American markets were the primary drivers of this growth, with the petfood sector in North America surpassing Europe's this year.
  • Europe was the only market experiencing a decline in petfood production in 2023. Supply-chain disruptions and inflationary pressures were the key factors contributing to this decrease.

The equine feed industry experienced a decrease of 3.9% (7.98 MMT, -0.32 MMT) in 2023.

  • The top challenges in the equine sector include high labour and material prices.
  • The top technologies impacting the sector are biosecurity, microchipping, genetics and nutritional solutions.
  • Survey respondents said the biggest opportunities for nutritional solutions are gut health management and feed efficiency.
  • Equine feed is expected to decrease both in price and in volume during the coming year.

Notable regional results:

  • North America saw a decrease of 2.8 MMT (259.26 MMT, -1.1%), with beef feed tonnage down significantly. The pig and dairy sectors also slipped slightly, but the broiler, layer and pet sectors more than made up the difference. Feed tonnage in the broiler sector was up nearly 2.9 percent.
  • Latin America experienced growth in 2023 by 2.46 MMT (200.67 MMT, +1.24%). Despite high production costs, geopolitical tensions and changing consumer behaviour due to economic reasons, the region continues to lead global growth, mainly because of its export-driven aquaculture, poultry and pork markets.
  • Europe continued its downward trend in feed production, with a decrease of 10.07 MMT (253.19 MMT, -3.82%) due to issues that included the invasion in Ukraine and the spread of animal diseases such as African swine fever (ASF) and avian influenza (AI).
  • Asia-Pacific led feed production growth in 2023, with an increase of 6.54 MMT (475.33 MMT, +1.4%). Feed production growth in the region's ruminant sectors offset a setback in the aqua sector. The region is home to several of the top 10 feed producing countries, including China, India, Vietnam and Japan.
  • Africa experienced continued but slower growth with an increase of 1.95%, nearly 1 MMT to total 51.42 MMT.
  • The Middle East saw a slight decrease of 0.12 MMT (35.93 MMT, -0.32%).
  • Oceania had the third-highest growth, 3.71% or 0.39 MMT to total 10.78 MMT.

Millers for Nutrition launches in Nigeria and recognises leading brands for delivering high-quality fortified foods

April 2, 2024 - The Director of Nutrition, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Sugra Mahmood, Dr Faniran Sanjo, Food System National Conveyor/Director Social Development of the Ministry of Budget & Economic Planning and NAFDAC's Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN) Director, Eva Edwards joined milling industry leaders, and other stakeholders at the 9th Agrofood Nigeria Exhibition and Summit to launch Millers for Nutrition, which aims to ensure that more Nigerians can access the nutritious food they need to live healthier and more productive lives.

Millers for Nutrition, a new industry-led coalition, has been established to make adequate fortification of staple foods easier and more rewarding for millers, the businesses responsible for processing dietary staples like flour, cooking oil and rice. By adding essential vitamins and minerals to the widely consumed foods they produce, millers can play an important role in reducing malnutrition and improving public health. Millers for Nutrition will encourage, enable and celebrate this vital work.

Millers who join Millers for Nutrition and commit to improving the nutritional quality of their food will receive free technical support to make it easier to fortify their products. This includes access to tailored technical training and business advice, product testing support and online tools and resources, which will also help millers to reduce their compliance risk and enhance production efficiency.

At the launch, Millers for Nutrition and participants also celebrated the winners of the 2024 MFI Awards, which recognise the miller and brands that are leading the way to fortifying their products with essential vitamins and minerals.

This year's MFI award winners include Crown Flour Mills Ltd (OLAM), Flour Mills of Nigeria PLC, Raffles Oil LFTZ Enterprises, and Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc. Other companies recognised at the awards ceremony include DUFIL Prima Foods and WACOT-Big Bull, recognised as the Rice Fortification pioneer brand.

Members of Millers for Nutrition will gain recognition for their efforts through platforms like the MFI Awards and other promotional activities including events and media. As fortification quality improves, members will benefit as they gain greater recognition for product quality and industry leadership.

Moving beyond break/fix to prevent downtime of critical animal feed conveyors

April 2, 2024 - Animal feed processors often rely on tubular drag cable conveyors to move sensitive materials and powders; therefore, it is important to properly design, install and proactively maintain these systems to minimise production downtime and maximise longevity.

In today's fast paced-animal feed processing environment, it is a standard practice to run conveyors until something breaks or needs to be repaired, which can lead to significant unnecessary downtime.

"Processors traditionally have relied on third parties such as local millwrights to install and maintain conveyors. These third parties may not have access to technical specifications or have not had the opportunity to read the manual and can therefore be unaware of system acceptable specifications and best practices. This can result in not only excessive downtime and maintenance, but also costly repairs and even premature system replacement," says Fernando mejia, Director of Product Life Cycle Management & Aftermarket for Automated Handling Solutions (AHS).

AHS combines the strengths of two market leaders, Cablevey Conveyors and Spiroflow, to provide customers with a specialised handling and automation product portfolio for mission-critical applications.

For animal feed processors, instead of reacting to individual problems as they arise, a more effective approach is to implement total preventative maintenance (TPM) for conveyors. This involves ongoing service and engineering support, resulting in reduced downtime and lower Operations and Maintenance (O&M) costs.

"We are here to assist customers reducing their total O&M costs. We are looking forward to partnering with our customers to inspect their systems, review layouts and formulate a total preventative maintenance plan based on their needs. Failing in this, customers may continue to replace parts prematurely with all the needless downtime this involves,"says Mejia.

According to Mejia, the goal of a TPM program is to work with their customers to maximise the output of their conveyors and extend the lifespan of their critical capital equipment.

The value of prevention

With the sophistication of state-of-the-art conveyors, proactive, preventative, and predictive maintenance is an effective strategy. This is the case with tubular drag cable conveyors, which gently move product through a sealed tube using a coated, flexible stainless-steel drag cable pulled through on a loop. Solid circular discs (flights) are attached to the cable, which propel the product through the tube without the use of air.

While it is possible to utilise third parties to install the systems and in-house maintenance teams to maintain them, there are considerable advantages to involving an OEM Supervisor, since they possess unparalleled training and expertise on the system.

OEM technicians typically have years of experience exclusively servicing and troubleshooting tubular drag style conveyors. Their technicians have conducted hundreds of inspections in plants worldwide that run any material imaginable, from powders and blends to animal feed, cereals, coffee beans, nuts and more.

"Many recurring problems stem from incorrect installation, which can involve improperly positioning the conveyor's hangers, excessive tension, misaligning tubing, leaving gaps, or insufficient supports. All these defects can generate friction, noise, and prematurely wear parts, requiring replacement," says Mejia.

An OEM can also proactively recommend the appropriate spare parts kits or high wear parts such as cables, connectors or sweeps that are known to have shorter lifecycles. This method encompasses assessing both the condition and usage of the conveyor, while also leveraging predictive data to efficiently resolve numerous issues before any downtime occurs.

"As the OEM, we can analyse system usage as well as component wear and lifecycle data to accurately predict when vital parts will likely need to be replaced and have them replaced before something breaks," says Mejia.

"The more a processor adheres to this type of total preventative maintenance schedule, the more likely the conveyors will provide optimal service throughout their anticipated lifespan," adds Mejia.

A comprehensive annual inspection of the conveyor system by the OEM is highly recommended. With the shortage of skilled mechanics combined with high employee turnover, they are here to perform in-depth inspections and recommended maintenance. This solution is mainly targeted to processors that have one or multiple tubular drag conveyors running constantly throughout the year.

According to Mejia, detecting problems such as gaps or misalignments requires camera inspection. The annual inspection also assesses the conveyors's tubes, walls, sweeps, connectors, input and output. In addition, cables should be checked for integrity and tension, discs and sprockets for wear and joints should be validated.

During the inspection process, the OEM can recalibrate to replace any components outside of system specifications. In the case of AHS, service technicians also advise on the use of any available update or retrofit kits that can further facilitate increased output.

While the frequency of the annual service visits depends on the system application and environment conditions, several factors can help determine the optimal frequency. As a partial list, this can include the type of conveyor systems in the facility, system length and complexity, average daily use, environment conditions and the type of material conveyed. When these factors are analysed, a service visit might be scheduled once or twice per year, as the situation warrants.

Many animal feed processors can benefit greatly from collaborating with a knowledgeable conveyor OEM to establish a comprehensive preventative maintenance plan. For instance, Mejia highlights the case of a processor that aimed to revamp their maintenance strategy.

This customer had expanded operations and was about to double their capacity. Although their conveyors were running well, they didn't want to risk unnecessary downtime. "So, they told us, 'We would like to avoid the 'break/fix' approach to move forward to a total preventative maintenance culture'" says Mejia. "I was thrilled to hear that our goal and vision were aligned."

To meet the demands of the animal feed industry and address the requested services, AHS is increasing their service capacity to assist processors in proactively mitigating issues and minimising downtime. The OEM will be establishing a service hub and parts depot on the West Coast, enabling localisation, onsite inspections, and comprehensive preventive maintenance by qualified technicians with a local presence.

The OEM is now offering long term service agreements that will comprehensively cover all aspects of maintenance, so the animal feed processor can focus on their core business with confidence in the performance of their conveyors.
