25/04/2016: USDA: Taking the grey out of wheat products

Even if you don’t know what “polyphenol oxidase” is, you’ve seen what it can do, says the USDA's AgResearch Magazine.

Polyphenol oxidase, an enzyme found in all plants, causes undesirable reactions such as browning in sliced apples, black spots in cut avocados, and dark marks on banana peels. It’s also responsible for grey discoloration in wheat products such as fresh noodles, fresh and frozen breads, and refrigerated biscuits—all made from hard white wheat.

Hard white wheat products such as white whole-grain breads are becoming more popular in the U.S. marketplace. Hard white wheat is the wheat of choice in select export markets, especially in Asia, where it is used to make a variety of fresh noodle products.

High levels of polyphenol oxidase in the grain make US hard white wheats undesirable and place them at a disadvantage relative to wheats from Australia in the Asian markets, says Bob Graybosch, plant geneticist and research leader of the Agricultural Research Service’s (ARS) Grain, Forage, and Bioenergy Research Unit in Lincoln, Nebraska. “Polyphenol oxidase is a big deal for Asian markets, because they don’t want to see grey noodles when they hang them up to dry and then sell.”

For 15 years, Graybosch has been studying the polyphenol oxidase trait in wheat, investigating numerous samples of white wheat obtained from the ARS National Small Grains Collection (NSGC), in Aberdeen, Idaho.

25/04/2016: ADM celebrates earth day with launch of sustainability progress tracker

Archer Daniels Midland Company has unveiled its Sustainability Progress Tracker, an online tool to provide an overview of the company’s goals and plans, as well as detailed reports on progress, as it works toward full implementation of its Commitment to No-Deforestation.
The ADM Sustainability Progress Tracker can be found HERE.

“As individuals, governments, companies and NGOs the world over celebrate Earth Day, we are proud to unveil this online tool, which underlines our continued commitment to achieving the important sustainability goals we laid out when we issued our Commitment to No-Deforestation last year,” said ADM Chairman and CEO Juan Luciano.

“Now, customers, partners and other stakeholders can see the progress we’ve made, and just as importantly, our plans to continue to implement our sustainability goals.”

Though—with rare exceptions—ADM is not a grower of crops, the No-Deforestation policy aims to leverage the company’s role as a major buyer of crops to help create more sustainable, traceable agricultural supply chains that protect high carbon stock forests, important natural ecosystems and peatlands, as well as the human rights of individuals along the agricultural value chain. ADM has partnered with The Forest Trust to implement the policy.

Deforestation - a growing problem (Image: crustmania)
Working with The Forest Trust, ADM has made significant progress since the company issued the No-Deforestation commitment last May. The company has mapped its palm oil footprint, established baseline traceability scores, and completed a review of all of its direct suppliers. On the soy side, ADM is working to identify regions of high risk, establish baseline scores, and review all of its suppliers in order to create a detailed action plan for working with suppliers to achieve the company’s goals.

“The Progress Tracker also highlights the important progress we’ve made in implementing our 2014 Commitment to Respect Human Rights,” said Ismael Roig, ADM’s chief sustainability officer.

“Last year, we completed our global analysis of human rights issues and identification of high-risk geographies, and analysed the risks in our own supply chain. Now we’re moving forward with actions to mitigate those risks.”

22/04/2016: UK Pulses formed by Senova and Wherry & Sons

UK Pulses, a newly formed joint venture between Senova and Wherry & Sons, is to specialise in the development, production and commercialisation of pulse crops.

http://www.senova.uk.com/
The new company will combine the strengths and expertise of the two private businesses, so that best use is made of Senova’s marketing and commercial skills, leaving Wherry & Son free to concentrate on its international pulse trading operations.

As a result, pulse varieties previously marketed by Wherry & Son – including the top selling winter bean Wizard and the very high yielding newcomer Bumble - will be transferred to UK Pulses, which will be managed by Senova.

According to Dan Wherry, the alliance will allow the new company to gain critical mass, which is especially important with minor crop species.

“By adding our germplasm and variety experience to Senova’s specialist seed activities, UK Pulses will be able to access and make good use of new breeding technologies.

“A breeding alliance with IBERS in Aberystwyth is already up and running, with good effect, and the first results of this will be evident when new varieties are released in the next few years.”

Senova’s commercial director Jeremy Taylor points out that strengthening the company’s involvement in the pulse seed sector is a good move, with peas and beans having an increasingly important place in farm rotations.

“This alliance comes at just the right time. We will be able to offer a good portfolio of winter and spring pulse varieties, with various end market uses.

“Looking further ahead, there are going be plenty of exciting opportunities for protein crops. UK Pulses will be well-placed to take advantage of those.”

http://www.wherryandsons.com/
That’s a view shared by Doug Harley of the Alexander Harley Seeds Group, Senova’s parent company, who adds that increasing the company’s pulse market share had been a goal.

“We are delighted to be joining forces with Wherry & Sons, as we have a firm belief in the future of pulses and their place on UK farms.”

22/04/2016: Agritechnica Asia 2017

DLG International and VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific to launch an Asian version of the world’s leading agricultural exhibition, Agritechnica, in Thailand: Agritechnica Asia in 2017

http://www.agritechnica-asia.com/
The two leading exhibition organisers in livestock and agricultural machinery today announced a joint-venture agreement to launch a new exhibition, Agritechnica Asia, 15 – 17 March 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand. The Asian edition of Agritechnica, the world’s largest trade fair for agricultural machinery and equipment, is set to be the first agricultural exhibition that covers all of Asia by focusing on Asia’s largest agricultural buyers from across the region.

Under the terms of the joint venture, the DLG – German Agricultural Society, organiser of Agritechnica in Hanover, Germany, and Dutch-Thai exhibition organiser VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific, organiser of VIV Asia in Bangkok, will collaborate to establish one of the most powerful joint ventures in the agricultural exhibition industry.

The first edition of Agritechnica Asia will be held from 15 - 17 March 2017 at BITEC, Bangkok, Thailand, in conjunction with VIV Asia, the largest livestock exhibition in Asia. The co-location will further accelerate the inaugural edition of Agritechnica Asia, leveraging synergies between animal and crop production.

While the focus in Europe is on innovations for the cultivation of cereals and maize, Agritechnica Asia will expand the exhibition program further to include local solutions for the cultivation of rice, cassava and sugar cane.

The mechanisation of Asian farms covers a wide range of capabilities. At Agritechnica Asia the emphasis will be on agricultural engineering solutions that are both relevant and important to the development of agriculture in the Asian markets. Mechanisation through modern machinery will increase significantly in the next decade mainly due to the growing labour shortages, more competition and therefore the requirement to reduce production costs.

“In addition to the strong growth currently in individual Southeast-Asian countries, this developing region as a whole will be further boosted by the ASEAN grouping by further regional integration in economic cooperation, food trade development and agri-innovations for sustainable food production" added Dr Achim Schaffner, DLG´s Head of Agricultural Economics. Thailand is considered a hub for the machinery trade in the region, which is underlined by the choice of Bangkok as the venue for Agritechnica Asia.

“Asia is very important part of the global food supply chain with vast land and rich natural resources. Agriculture plays a very important role in Asian economy. The world's top brand agricultural companies stand out in the region. Now Agritechnica comes to Asia. I believe it will definitely bring new platform and opportunities to the development of agriculture in Asia.
Lovol Group is very pleased to join hands with the DLG to present our brand, products, technology and service to the customers from around the world on this platform of Agritechnica Asia,” says Mr Wang Guimin, Chairman of the Board, LOVOL, China.

To ensure an impressive launch of Agritechnica Asia, the organisers decided to realise an international hosted buyer program for the top 150 agricultural decision makers in Asia-Pacific.

“We consider Asia-Pacific as one of our key growth regions. The steep rise in dairy consumption is leading to an upswing in mechanisation of grassland management to which Pöttinger, as a grassland specialist, can make a valuable contribution. We also see a great need for investment in arable farming. Pöttinger has the right solutions for both small-scale farming structures and large farms,” said Mr Heinz Pöttinger, Managing Director Pöttinger Landtechnik GmbH, Austria.

The first edition of Agritechnica Asia is supported by the world’s leading launch partners LEMKEN, Lovol and Pöttinger, with some further leading agricultural manufacturers in discussion.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the development of a relevant professional program accompanying the exhibition. With the support of industry experts, its aim is to enable transfer of know-how through innovative technology for agricultural farms in the region, as well as to strengthen the agricultural network for agricultural machinery manufacturers in Asia. Also of importance is the recognition of innovative agricultural technology developments in Asia through an Agritechnica Asia innovations award scheme.

"The key goal is to develop new markets together with the agricultural machinery industry. We will bring the top decision makers from ASEAN, China, India, Japan, Korea, and the Middle East together," said Bernd Koch, Managing Director DLG International GmbH.

“LEMKEN, the specialist supplier for professional arable farming, has been active for many years in the Chinese and Indian markets. Our versatile product range is suitable in many ways to mechanise agriculture in the Asia-Pacific countries and thus provides a significant potential for the future. In order to accede and develop these markets, LEMKEN intends to participate in the first Agritechnica Asia in Bangkok 2017. This first international exhibition for agricultural machinery in the area provides for LEMKEN an important basis for the future business development,” said Anthony van der Ley, CEO LEMKEN GmbH & Co KG, Germany.

DLG (German Agricultural Society) is an independent and non-political organisation with a large global network, undertaking not-for-profit activities in key agricultural countries. The organisation acts as a partner for the successful development and expansion of international business for foreign companies investing in overseas markets. Through its many specialist exhibitions companies, the DLG supports companies in finding new and appropriate markets by bringing partners together also at the local level. In 2015, DLG organised the Agritechnica exhibition, as well as more than 25 exhibitions in 15 countries. These events have not only resulted in new customers and contracts, but also provided opportunities for greater brand and product awareness for the companies involved. This served as an ideal route for sustainable entry into new markets.

DLG International GmbH operates since 1987 as a highly specialised consulting company with focus on services for organisations of agribusiness and food industry. It has eight international subsidiaries: DLG RUS OOO in Russia; DLG Italia; DLG Benelux in the Netherlands; DLG AgroFood in Poland; DLG Inter Marketing in Romania; DLG Fuarcilik in Turkey; and DLG AgroTechService in China, as well as IFWexpo in Heidelberg, Germany.

The joint venture brings together the complementary strengths of DLG and VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific.

"At VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific we have successfully co-developed some of Asia’s leading trade shows with German organisers in the past. Working with DLG is a strategic joint-venture that will deliver an incredible business platform for the Asian market. Most importantly, we incorporate the entire industry from the very beginning to tailor a marketplace that serves their needs," revealed Mr Nino Gruettke, Managing Director of VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific.
