23/11/2016: IGP Institute trains industry professionals on flour milling techniques

IGP Institute Partnered with Buhler, Inc. to offer milling course for experienced millers.

Whether baking bread or a batch of cookies, it is important that wheat and flour quality are at its best.

Interest in this topic lead Kansas State University’s IGP Institute to partner with Buhler, Inc. to offer milling courses for industry personnel.

The Buhler Executive Milling courses were held at the IGP Institute Conference Centre between November 7-16, 2016, for 26 participants.

The course focused on knowledge and expertise over wheat handling and processing. Participant Kent Kruse, corporate engineering manager at Bay State Milling in Bolingbrook, Illinois, says he came to the institute to learn more about flour milling.

“I will leave here with a better knowledge of milling and how things are processed,” says Kruse. “The course was well done, it covered a lot of aspects of flour milling like quality, milling, sifting and food quality. It has been good and I plan on taking a refresher course in the future.”

The identical courses focused on many aspects of the flour milling process, including equipment, technology, sanitation, cleaning and food safety. Details on the composition of the wheat kernel, storage conditions of wheat, quality control and wheat classes were also taught.

Outside the classroom, participants toured the KSU Hall Ross Mill to see the design and function of flour mills, engaged in hands on practicals with machines like the combi-clearner and indented cylinder separator.

Course manager and Buhler Instructor of Milling Jason Watt says in addition to learning course material, it is valuable for participants from all over the world to share experiences and work together.

“It has been great to see people from various backgrounds and management levels, both domestic and international, come together to learn and further their understanding of the business and milling process.”

This is just one example of the trainings offered by the IGP Institute. In addition to grain processing and flour milling, IGP offers courses in the areas of grain marketing and risk management, and feed manufacturing and grain quality management.

The World Grain Market and Russia’s Place on it was held during the SecondWorld Grain Forum in Sochi. The business breakfast under the moderation of Sergey Levin, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation was attended by Alexander Tkachev, Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.

Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Arkady Dvorkovich addressed the attendees with the welcome speech. He stated that Russia is steadily building up production of grain and is returning to the position of the world leader in grain supply.

According to Arkady Dvorkovich, the Russian Federation has almost doubled grain production since 2009, when the First World Grain Forum was held in St Petersburg.

“Today, Russia is not only able to present its forecasts and plans but also to demonstrate its considerable achievements in the agricultural sector. Herewith, the Russian Federation has an enormous potential for development in the field of grain production. The country should improve technologies, raise the quality of management, expand engineering capacities, supply farming enterprises with advanced technology”, said Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

Russia also takes an active part in global humanitarian program of grain supply and assumes responsibility for agricultural sector development in neighbouring countries—Armenia, Belarus, Kirghizia, etc.

The Russian Federation is ready as to increase the overall area under crops so to improve the quality of output in order to accomplish the identified target— to increase the grain production from the output of 2016 (117 million tons) to 150 million tons by 2030, declared Arkady Dvorkovich.

Recent achievements of Russia are not the reason to rest on laurels, noted Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Alexander Tkachev.

Having vast areas and capacities in its disposal, Russia should be deeply involved in melioration, improve soil fertility, and recover millions of cropland into circulation, taking into account the specific nature of national agricultural production, primarily adverse climatic conditions.

By 2030 the export of Russian grain may amount to 50 million tons. Herewith, Russia should consider new export opportunities. Grain is our second oil, pointed out Minister of Agriculture.

As it was mentioned by UN FAO’s Senior Economist Abdolreza Abbassian, the reduction of purchasing prices for grain is the key challenge of the global market.

Maintaining of prices at the level acceptable for both manufacturers and consumers will allow increasing the part of high-quality grain in the overall output, considers Minister of Agriculture of Canada in 2007–2015 Gerry Ritz. Government institutions and grain producers should speak about the quality of feedstock along with the output volumes, pointed out Mr. Ritz.

In opinion of the President of the Russian Grain Union Arkady Zlochevsky, volumes of world trade are in direct relation with infrastructure availability, whose development lags behind the grain production.

Prospects of the global grain market depend on an extensive use of innovative technologies in the first place, considers the President of the International Grain Coalition Gary Martin. Representatives of countries—main importers of Russian grain, investors, traders, and experts also delivered their speeches at the business breakfast.

Participants discussed changes taking place on the global grain market, prospects of Russian export and new vectors of co-operation, as well as the role of the State in regulation of the grain market.

My two previous articles have mentioned the importance to the milling trade of conventions and exhibitions. A report in The Miller, January 7th 1884 (pp838-9) continues that theme.

The report, of the Islington exhibition in London, showed that the milling engineers of the time were fully alive to the needs of millers as the demand for every more efficient machines continued to grow. The following snapshots give a glimpse of the progress being made by specific firms at that time.

Widely regarded as unsurpassed

Buchholz and Co, founded by Gustav Adolf Buchholz, received an order from Messrs. W Baker & Son, a well-known miller in Bristol, to design a gradual reduction system for the manufacture of 5,000 sacks of flour per week. The intended new mill was to replace one that had burnt down.

The building of the mill, the engine and the wheat cleaning system were carried out under the personal direction of Mr. Baker. The system of flour making, introduced by Mr. Buchholz, was set up to suit the requirements of the trade in the South of England, and his knowledge of gradual reduction, first introduced in 1864, was widely regarded as unsurpassed.

Mr J Harrison Carter of London reported that during 1883 he had put in important additions to the gradual reduction mills at several sites in the UK and a number, which he erected, were of high capacity output. Mr Carter had also been working on mills in Ireland.

Mr AB Childs & Sons of London had started up three mills on the Jonathan Mills’ system; one at Chelsea belonging to Mr E Mead, another at Kirkaldy, Scotland owned by Mr W Hogarth, and a third at Blackburn in Lancashire belonging to Mr Appleby & Sons.
 

The firm also had additional contracts for the same system and it was understood that they had a large demand for their bran roller mill and Wegmann’s “Victoria” porcelain roller mill. Messrs WR Dell & Son of London, in addition to finishing Mr French’s mill at Bow in London, which would have a weekly output of from 1500 to 2000 sacks, had started on several other mills with the gradual reduction system.

As proof that millstones had not been totally superseded by rollers in the manufacture of flour, they stated that the firm had sold between four and five hundred millstones during the year, besides a large number of wheat cleaning and other machines.

Messrs Fiechter & Sons of Liverpool had secured four contracts for complete mills based on their roller system. In their advertising they comment that in re-modelling stone mills to the roller process they could use all the old machinery if desired.

Mr W Gardner of Gloucester had remodeled several mills, which were working successfully. He had brought out a new centrifugal which he claimed had important new features and a new three-high roller mill.

He had also done a good trade in millstones for the UK and the colonies. In passing I should mention that a typical gem in our Archive collections is a tender from Mr Gardner to install a roller plant to be driven by the waterwheel at Hildersham Mills in Cambridgeshire.

Messrs Higginbottom & Stuart of Liverpool had been busy during the year working their system of milling by discs. They were strong advocates of gradual reduction and complete elimination of the germ from flour. Their orders also included wheat-cleaning machinery with special reference to Indian wheat.

22/11/2016: Nutriad concludes 2016 Polish wheat and triticale mycotoxin survey

Poland is one of Europe’s biggest grain producers. Its farming sector has changed dramatically since it joined the European Union (EU) more than 10 years ago.

According to the Main Statistical Office, Poland, the production of wheat, rye, mixed grains, triticale, barley, corn and oats is forecasted to increase by approximately 6 percent to 29.5 million metric tons in 2016/17.

This is because of the better than average yield expectations compared to the lower yields of 2015 which were due to the unfavourable summer weather conditions.

The total acreage for grain plantings is estimated to be 3 percent higher than in 2015. Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by filamentous fungi that cause a toxic response (mycotoxicosis) when ingested by farm and companion animals.

Fusarium, Aspergillus and Penicillium are the most abundant moulds that produce these toxins and contaminate human foods and animal feeds through fungal growth prior to and during harvest, or during (improper) storage (Bhatnagar et al., 2004).

The 2016 Nutriad Mycotoxin Survey included 73 wheat and 32 triticale samples collected across Poland. All samples were collected either directly from the farms or from animal feed production sites. Sample providers followed the principles of good sampling (Richard, 2000).

The analytical personnel and laboratory staff were not involved in sampling and, therefore, did not influence any part of this procedure.

The survey provided an insight into the incidences of aflatoxin B1 (AfB1), zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol (DON), T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, fumonisin B1 (FB1), fumonisin B2 (FB2) and ochratoxin A (OTA) across all regions of Poland.

More than 800 analyses were conducted to test for the presence of the eight mycotoxins most frequently found in agricultural commodities that are intended for animal feed production. All eight mycotoxins were analysed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC MS/MS).

For the purpose of data analysis, non-detection levels were based on the limits of quantification (LOQ) of the test method for each mycotoxin: AfB1 < 0.5 μg/kg; ZEN < 10 μg/kg; DON < 75 μg/kg; FB1 < 125 μg/kg; FB1 < 50 μg/kg; OTA < 1 μg/kg; HT2-toxin< 4 μg/kg and T-2 toxin < 4 μg/kg.


The results from the Nutriad survey showed that almost 70 percent of the wheat samples were contaminated with DON and 30 percent with ZEN and HT2-toxin.

As expected none of the wheat or triticale samples contained AfB1.  Surprisingly almost 20 percent of the samples of triticale were contaminated with FB2, a typical maize mycotoxin.  Most of the recovered mycotoxins were in concentrations regarded as medium (>LOD but below EU recommendation levels). 

The highest concentration of DON and ZEN found in the wheat reached 1200 μg/kg and 270 μg/kg respectively.  Interestingly, 6 percent of the triticale samples contained OTA while none of the wheat samples were contaminated with OTA, a known typical storage mycotoxin. 

None of the samples of wheat or triticale were contaminated with FB1, also a typical maize mycotoxin (Table 1 and Table 2).

The wheat and triticale mycotoxin survey conducted by Nutriad in 2016 concluded that this year’s harvest of wheat and triticale in Poland is of concerning quality in terms of mycotoxin contamination. 

Based on the results of this survey, it is the belief that this year’s wheat and triticale crop should not be considered safe for inclusion into finished feed rations for all animal species.

Wheat and triticale in animal feeds originates from many sources and vigilance is always advisable.  Wheat, triticale, barley and oats harvested in 2016 across Europe have been shown to be contaminated with medium concentrations of mycotoxins. 

The last possible line of defence is the detoxification of mycotoxins in vivo.  The addition of proven mycotoxin deactivators to animal feeds is a very common method to prevent mycotoxicosis and is an effective strategy to keep the risk of mycotoxin contamination low under any and all conditions.

16/11/2016: Technical seminar for maximising the efficiency of the poultry industry offered entirely in Spanish at 2017 IPPE

For the third year in a row, the US Poultry & Egg Association is hosting the education program, “Seminario Técnico para Maximizar la Eficiencia de la Industria Avícola” (Technical Seminar for Maximising the Efficiency of the Poultry Industry), during the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE). The seminar will be conducted entirely in Spanish. 

IPPE, will be held Jan. 31 – Feb. 2, 2017. 
Seminario Técnico para Maximizar la Eficiencia de la Industria Avícola is a full-day program that will be held from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, 2017.

The cost is $150 for all registered IPPE attendees. This year’s program will feature a variety of topics, including Antibiotic Free Broiler Production; Animal Welfare as a Sustainability and Good Business Tool; Mocotoxin Damage Control on Egg Layers; Gumboro Disease Control; Nutritional Plans for Optimum Broiler Productivity; Sanitation Programs for Hatcheries; Yield Optimisation in Processing Plants; Motivating Processing Plant Employees and Growout Factors That Influence Processing and Carcass Management.

IPPE, the world's largest annual poultry, feed and meat industry trade show, will be held Jan. 31 – Feb. 2, 2017.

IPPE is a collaboration of three trade shows, the International Feed Expo, International Poultry Expo and International Meat Expo, representing the entire chain of protein production and processing.

The event is sponsored by the US Poultry & Egg Association, American Feed Industry Association and the North American Meat Institute.

Welcome to Milling4Life (M4L), the Charitable Incorporated Organisation dedicated to the prevention and alleviation of poverty, financial hardship and malnutrition through enhanced food security from sustainable milling.
 

Our first project is to introduce the benefits of milling technology and practice to a wider audience on the African continent through targeted knowledge transfer.

To further this aim the M4L team will attended the IAOM Conference at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on October 24-27, 2016.

Significant advance planning has taken place involving the African Union agency New Partnership for Africa’s Development who are providing a supporting speaker to the conference to discuss the vital subject of food security and the absolutely central role of milling to achieving this, as yet unanswered, African aspiration.

Indeed the role of milling has, to the detriment of the cause, almost been invisible in the mountain of reports published on the problem of food security.

We are also looking to boost work on indigenous African crops for milling as these crops represent the very best of currently undeveloped and unexploited genetics for the African continent.

We have had a couple of thousand years to bring wheat to its current refined market state, but only a few decades working on African equivalents, such as millet and sorghum, that are more suited to the climate and daylight length of the different climatic parts of the continent.
