After a construction period of 20 months and an investment of about CHF 50 million, Bühler Group is today officially opening its CUBIC innovation campus with eight Application Centres.

The global challenges associated with nutrition and mobility are becoming increasingly urgent. How can we sustainably feed and provide mobility for a population of nearly 10 billion in 2050? The three-story CUBIC is designed to accommodate up to 300 people, and is, in itself, a model of sustainability and innovation. The building uses 15 percent less energy than comparable structures of its size. Its smart electrochromic glass facade was coated on equipment from Bühler Leybold Optics. This enables Bühler to slash energy consumption for heating and air-conditioning by as much as 50 percent. Building sensors measure carbon dioxide levels, air humidity, temperature, and flow of people to continuously fine-tune the functionality and energy consumption of the CUBIC. ONE: The Alltech Ideas Conference (ONE19) brought together the brightest international minds in science, agriculture, technology and business this week in Lexington, Kentucky. Among them were young leaders in agriscience participating in the Alltech Young Scientist (AYS) competition and more than 100 agricultural journalists as part of the International Press program.

Deeksha Shetty, representing the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, was selected as the 2019 Alltech Young Scientist after presenting her research to a panel of international judges as the final stage of the world's largest agriscience competition for graduate university students. Winnings include US$10,000, career mentorship and networking opportunities with innovative scientists from around the world. Now in its 14th year, the AYS competition has received entrants from a total of 120 universities and 40 countries.
In conjunction with the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ), Alltech was proud to announce a new award that recognises excellence and leadership by young journalists. After a nomination process by IFAJ guilds around the world, international judges from Alltech and IFAJ declared Denene Erasmus, editor at Farmer's Weekly, the largest English language agricultural publication in South Africa, the recipient of the inaugural IFAJ-Alltech International Award for Leadership in Agricultural Journalism.
These awards are representative of the legacy of the late Dr Pearse Lyons, the founder of Alltech. As an accomplished scientist and passionate storyteller, he strongly supported the importance of mentorship and education through programs and partnerships such as AYS and IFAJ.

FEFAC has made the final programme to its 60th Anniversary event available, taking place on 6 June 2019 in the Royal Art & History Museum in Brussels.
The event aims to take stock of two pressing challenges for the European feed industry; the future EU feed protein supply and climate change mitigation strategies by the EU feed & livestock sector.
European Commissioner for Agriculture & Rural Development, Mr Phil Hogan, will give a key note speech on the working progress as regards the new greening architecture and delivery model of the CAP and their potential opportunities for the EU Protein Plan.
The newly published EU Feed Protein Balance Sheet, which now includes roughages as the number one feed protein source, estimates EU self-sufficiency in total feed protein at 80 percent. They do, however, point to a significant deficit for 'protein-rich' oilseed meals with only 26 percent produced in Europe.
The topic will be further discussed by the panellists John Clarke (DG AGRI Director International Affairs), Jim Sutter (CEO, USSEC – US Soybean Export Council), Pekka Pesonen (Secretary General, Copa-Cogeca) and Nick Major (FEFAC President). They will also exchange views on the present state of implementation of the US-EU trade statement on soy imports.
In the panel on climate change impacts related to EU feed and livestock production, Jean-Louis Peyraud (President Animal Task Force) and Joao Shimada (Earth Innovation Institute), will discuss the strategies and tools for the EU feed industry and livestock sector to mitigate impacts on climate change, deforestation and biodiversity.

Executives and producers from Latin America met in the US to hear the success story of liquid methionine and its results on farms
Global animal nutrition company, Novus International, Inc., this week hosted a group of major producers from Latin American poultry and pork companies to hear "The Success Story of ALIMET®". The event took place at Novus's ALIMET® manufacturing facility at Chocolate Bayou in Texas, U.S. from May 13-16. The event provided a showcase for ALIMET® feed supplement (HMTBa), a liquid source of methionine activity that delivers an organic acid effect in poultry, swine, ruminants and aquaculture.
The visit included a tour of the manufacturing facility where ALIMET® is made, presentations from Novus executives as well as talks from Harvard Business School professor Thales Teixeira, and Douglas Zaviezo, an international consultant on animal nutrition who has worked with ALIMET® for years.
"The acceptance of liquid methionine by feed mills has been very rapid due to many operational and zootechnical advantages over powdered methionine. Among them, automated dosing, improved mixing and reduced particle loss,' Mr Zaviezo said.
Methionine is a first limiting amino acid in poultry and ruminant diets and a nutrient necessary in animal production. It works to reduce the amount of nitrogen excreted and allows for better performance, particularly in times of stress.

Having the ability to respond rapidly with a high-performance unloading system
that requires no infrastructure can prove to be an ideal solution for the grain
industry; Peter Göransson, Sales Manager and Senior Advisor for Siwertell,
explains how.
Trade routes for the world’s bulk commodities, especially in the maritime
sector, benefit from a concept known as just-in-time delivery. The central idea
is that if bulk cargoes can be delivered in a continuous stream, the vessels
that carry them can maintain economical speeds to deliver the goods on time.
Just-in-time is not as straightforward as fast delivery, and involves certain
engineering and logistical challenges, but it can offer huge economic
advantages in terms of efficiency savings. Ensuring this for grain deliveries
is particularly testing, as the seasonal nature of many crops creates peaks and
troughs in delivery schedules, therefore anything that can lessen the impact of
these on the logistics chain will deliver efficiency benefits.
Smoothing material flows
The new Siwertell port-mobile unloader works well to smooth bulk material flows
in port and allows operators to be responsive exactly when required. It serves
the same 60,000 dwt ship size as pneumatic systems, which are widely used in
grain unloading operations, but can completely strip away their various
inefficiencies.
Pneumatic systems also deliver a fast unloading profile, but at a cost; a cost
in terms of elevated fuel consumption and a cost in terms of material
degradation. Pneumatics rely on similar technology to vacuum cleaners, but the
companies who designed this technology never had to worry about the integrity
or eventual quality of what they suck up; port operators, however, do.
The same forces that propel cargo so quickly through these machines smash,
crush, and scrape the cargoes all the way through the process and in the grain
handling industry, crushed commodities translate into a loss of profit.
Cutting your losses
The steady action of a counter-rotating mechanical screw, combined with a
specially designed inlet, submerged in the cargo, means that Siwertell machines
can avoid the grain degradation problems presented by high-velocity pneumatic
conveying; there are no cargo avalanches; no swirling air currents close to the
intake to fling the cargo across a wide area; nor are there crushing forces, as
large volumes of cargo collide with the machine’s internal components.
Throughout the unloading process, large volumes of cargo are delivered
deliberately and continuously from the screw-type intake to the truck or belt
conveyor at the other end. This minimises any cargo degradation and maintains
very high levels of handling efficiency, ultimately delivering higher
cargo-handling rates and volume capabilities as pneumatic systems. Read more HERE.
