The flour mills of East Scotland: Part 2

As the National Convention in 1902 took place in Edinburgh (see my article in last month's Milling & Grain), the local mills and their owners attracted a lot of attention.

I am therefore moving on from the mills of Fife to those in Edinburgh and Leith, a short distance north of the capital city. Over half of the local reception committee came from the two main milling families of the area, the Tods and the Herdmans.
 


Leith Flour Mills: Messrs A&R Tod Ltd

In 1851, Robert Tod entered into partnership with his brother Alexander as corn merchants. After a year or two they leased several small mills and in 1859 they built the Leith Flour Mills.

For many years these were the largest mills in the country, having at one time 80 pairs of millstones in operation, more than any other mill in Scotland. The mills suffered a flour dust explosion in 1874 in the stive room situated above the boiler house and, sadly, six people lost their lives in the fire.

Alexander then retired and Robert carried on the business, converting it into a private limited company in 1894 with himself as chairman until his death in 1897 and his sons Thomas and George as managing directors.

The mill was reconstructed, divided into separate blocks as a safeguard against the spread of fire. The walls were all of solid stone and the floors concrete. In1882, roller mills were installed and two years later a flour dust explosion blew apart an outside wall with the debris killing two people in the street.

The capacity of the mill was 45 sacks-per-hour and it was arranged in three plants, one used for soft and two for hard wheats. Plants one and three together had 70 sets of roller mills, many of which were doubles, and 13 were of the Turner’s latest pattern, all fitted recently.

Both plants had only been installed since the turn of the century and were driven by Douglas & Grant engines. The mill manager had full charge of the mills and had been with the firm for 31 years; it was suggested that it would have been possible to run the mill, bar accident, for a year without stopping, although Mr Tod had it rested every Sunday.

The dressing, dusting and grading machinery consisted of 16 Robinson large size iron frame centrifugals, and 12 other makes. There were also five large oblong ‘Haggenmacher’ plansifters, nine reels and eight sifters each about 10 ft x 18 inches.

Inspection

Novus International recognises top researchers at Poultry Science Association Annual Meeting 2019

Novus International, Inc. presented two top researcher educators with high honours during the Poultry Science Association (PSA) Annual Meeting, held 15-18th July in Montreal, Canada.

The Novus Outstanding Scholar Award winner is selected by Novus and recognises a researcher who has helped Novus further its goal in developing science-based solutions for the agriculture industry. Dr Audrey McElroy is a professor and broiler extension specialist in the Department of Poultry Science at Texas A&M University in the U.S. where she teaches Breeder and Hatchery Management and a Poultry Science capstone course in professional skills and career readiness. Her current research at Texas A&M includes growth performance, gut health and dietary strategies in poultry.

Givaudan and Bühler partner to fast-track market access and innovation for start-ups

Givaudan, the global leader in flavours and fragrances, and Bühler, global leader for food processing solutions, have today announced a development partnership to accelerate market access for food start-ups in Switzerland.

The aim is to support start-ups which offer solutions that deliver safe, affordable, nutritious and delicious food that, if scaled globally, will contribute to feeding 10 billion people by 2050.
 
Through this new partnership, Givaudan and Bühler aim to intensify access to knowledge, capabilities and global platforms for food start-ups, by hosting and mentoring entrepreneurs at their respective, newly-opened world class innovation centres in Switzerland. By offering their expertise in complementary areas, Givaudan and Bühler hope to provide all the support a start-up needs to scale-up and commercialise disruptive new solutions.

AFIA honours animal scientists with nutrition research awards

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) honoured two individuals in the animal science field last week at the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS)–Canadian Society of Animal Science annual meeting in Austin, Texas.

Robert Goodband, Ph.D., of Kansas State University (KSU), received the AFIA-ASAS Non-Ruminant Animal Nutrition Research Award, and Kendall Swanson, Ph.D., of North Dakota State University (NDSU), received the AFIA-ASAS Ruminant Animal Nutrition Research Award.

'These gentlemen have invested years and years of time and research into the livestock industry, and the industry is better for it,' said Paul Davis, Ph.D., AFIA's director of quality, animal food safety and education. 'AFIA is honoured to present them with these awards.'

Non-Ruminant Animal Nutrition Research Award
Dr Goodband is a swine nutritionist at KSU and has played an important role in developing an intensive on-farm research program, which has conducted numerous on-farm trials across the United States.

Dr Goodband also teaches swine science and nutrition courses and serves as an academic advisor to around 45 undergraduate students each year. He has served as the major professor for 22 master's and doctorate degree students and on committees of an additional 113 students. His work has resulted in 310 refereed journal papers, six book chapters, over 1,000 research reports and extension publications, eight patents and $13.9 million in grants and gifts to KSU.

Originally from Walpole, Mass., Dr Goodband graduated with a bachelor's degree from The Pennsylvania State University in 1984. He obtained his master's and doctorate degrees in swine nutrition at KSU and joined the university's faculty in 1989.

Ruminant Animal Nutrition Research Award
Dr Swanson is a professor in NDSU's Department of Animal Sciences. His research has focused on nutritional influences on performance, nutrient balance, post-ruminal starch digestion, pancreatic function, and energy and nitrogen metabolism in beef cattle.

He also teaches courses in nutrition and physiology and has advised 50 students and staff. Dr Swanson's work has cumulated 312 publications and $5.7 million in grant funds.

Hailing from a farm in southeastern North Dakota, Dr Swanson received his bachelor's and master's degrees from NDSU and received his doctorate degree from the University of Kentucky. He also gained experience in animal science as a research associate at the US Department of Agriculture's Meat Animal Research Center and as a faculty member at the University of Guelph in Canada.

'Gods of Grain', the unique FlourWorld Museum’s feature new theme room

A further theme room has been added to the unique FlourWorld Museum in Wittenburg (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania): 'Gods of Grain' leads visitors into the ancient world of deities and harvest rites.

From the earliest days of agriculture, they have been said to guarantee rich harvests. The exhibition traces the significance of grain from the myths of the early advanced civilizations to the monotheistic world religions.
 
 In the centre of new theme room 'Gods of Grain' stands the little corn mummy, still in its well-preserved sarcophagus in which it was to be buried over 2,000 years ago. It is a falcon-headed representation of Sokar and Osiris, the gods of the dead.

A proud feature of the collection is a two-thousand-year old corn mummy, that allows an insight into the realm of the ancient Egyptian gods. It is a loan from the Austrian businessman and bread expert Peter Augendopler, the founder of the 'Paneum' – House of Bread – in Asten near Linz.

In the centre of the new theme room 'Gods of Grain' is the little corn mummy, still in its well-preserved sarcophagus in which it was to be buried over 2,000 years ago. It is a falcon-headed representation of Sokar and Osiris, the gods of the dead. Moulded out of silt from the Nile, with grains of barley and emmer, the mummy stands for the germinating power of corn and the principle of life itself. As a burial gift, this power was said to have a magical effect on the soul of the deceased. Although there were once countless corn mummies of this kind, fewer than two hundred examples of an Osiris-Sokar sarcophagus are now preserved worldwide.
